UNIT III: ARTS AND CRAFTS OF MINDANAO

"Mindanao’s arts such as hand weaving, metallurgy, architecture, music and epic
chanting have gained prominence and recognition from government agencies as well as in the
private sector. And this holds true especially in the academe. But the chance of these arts
surviving popular recognition under an environment of fast-changing technological advances
is in question," Hataman said.
These statements seek to preserve, promote
Mindanao traditional arts.

figures
o the mold is made from wax then using his mold, covers it with clay
o molten brass is then poured into the clay cast which melts and replaces the
wax to form the finished product

MATERIALS NEEDED:
1. 1.5-L PET bottles cut into half, lengthwise
2. 2 pcs. of short bond papers
3. Popsicle sticks or broomstick
4. Art papers
5. Coloring materials

PROCEDURES:

I. The Body

1. Fold the paper diagonally and then cut the excess piece to make a square.
2. Fold the paper in half horizontally.
3. Fold one half of the paper outward and upward towards the centerfold. Repeat on
the other side.
4. Unfold one side (leaving the other side folded facing down) then fold all the
corners inward to the center evenly.
5. Fold back in half inward to form a trapezoid.
6. Open the longest side fully making 2 opposite tips overlapping each other.
7. Make a small crease inward on both new made tips to create a flat base.
8. Finally open the overlapping flaps to form the boat.

II. The Sail

Use bond paper, art papers and coloring materials to design your own vinta sail
patterns. Use Popsicle sticks or the like to act as a pole to support the sail.

III. The Outriggers (Katig)

Use popsicle sticks and form 1 2-step ladder then attach it at the bottom of the body.

After assembling your vinta, you may add more detail to give character to your
creation.

VI. ADDITIONAL READINGS / AGREEMENT / ASSIGNMENT

Read the following paragraph below and answer the questions that follow:

S C U LP T UR E
Three-dimensional art made by one of four basic processes: carving, modelling, casting,
constructing
CARVING
Carving is a sculptural technique that involves using tools to shape a form by cutting or
scraping away from a solid material such as stone, wood, ivory or bone.

CASTING
Casting involves making a mould and then pouring a liquid material, such as molten metal,
plastic, rubber or fibreglass into the mould. A cast is a form made by this process. Many

9
sculptures are produced by the artist modelling a form (normally in clay, wax or plaster).
This is then used to to create a mould to cast from. A mould can be cast more than once,
allowing artists to create editions of an artwork.

M O D EL L IN G
Modelling is an additive process. This means a soft material is worked by the artist to build
up a shape or form (rather than scraping or material away as in carving). Also unlike
carving, soft materials such as clay and wax can be changed and reworked. Modelling
a maquette can also often be the first step in the creation of a finished sculpture.

C O N ST R U CT I N G A N D A S S EM B L I N G
In the twentieth century a new way of making sculpture emerged with
the cubist constructions of Picasso. These were still life subjects made from scrap (found)
materials glued together. Constructed sculpture in various forms became a major stream in
modern art, including in movements such as constructivism or techniques like assemblage.
Artists have used techniques including bending, folding, stitching, welding, bolting, tying,
weaving, and balancing to construct sculptures from a wide variety of materials and found
objects.

1. How is casting different from other forms of sculpture?

A. Casting creates sculptures that are much more realistic than other forms of
sculpture
B. Casting can only be used to create small sculptures; other techniques can create
sculptures of any size
C. Casting always involves soft clay; other techniques usually involve hard stone or
metal
D. Casting is the only technique that can create many copies of one sculpture
2. If you were carving a sculpture, what medium might you be working in?
A. metal B. wood C. clay D. wax
3. What can you infer about prehistoric sculpture?
A. It usually depicted landscapes.
B. It usually depicted abstract forms.
C. It usually depicted animals and humans.
D. It usually depicted imaginary, mythical creatures.
4. Why should you sketch your project out before building it?
A. You can work out any problems before wasting materials
B. It helps you plan out your idea in your mind so that when you make it, it's easier to
remember what you're doing
C. It allows you to get feedback from others who may make suggestions to make it
better
D. All the above
5. Carving, modeling, casting, constructing, assembling are all examples of....
A. clay figures B. plaster forms C. Reliefs D. Sculpture
