Understanding Anatomical Planes & Position

The document outlines objectives for a 2-hour demo session to teach 1st year MBBS students about anatomical terminology including defining the normal anatomical position, describing anatomical planes and sections, defining anatomical terms, and defining and demonstrating anatomical movements. It provides details on anatomical planes including median, sagittal, coronal, and transverse planes as well as anatomical sections. Examples of anatomical terms related to proximity, laterality, and structural relationships are also defined.

PLANES, SECTIONS,
TERMINOLOGIES, & MOVEMENTS
DR. SYED WAJAHAT HASIB
LECTURER

1
OBJECTIVES

• By the end of this 2-hour demo session, the 1st year MBBS student
should be able to:

• Define the normal anatomical position

• Describe the different anatomical planes and sections

• Define the different anatomical terms

• Define and perform different anatomical movements with respect to their axes

2
ANATOMICAL POSITION

• Is the position of an individual in

which he/she is:

• Standing erect

• With arms by the sides

• Palms facing forwards

• Feet together

• Eyes looking straight

3
ANATOMICAL PLANES & SECTIONS

Anatomical planes are imaginary planes used to facilitate the

description of the anatomical relations and locations

Sections are actual dissections of the body carried out in order to view
the internal structures of the body

4
ANATOMICAL PLANES

5
6
MEDIAN PLANE
• Vertical anteroposterior plane

• Passes longitudinally through midlines of

head, neck and trunk

• Divides body into left and right

• Also known as midsagittal plane or

median sagittal plane
7
SAGITTAL PLANES

• Any other vertical plane parallel to

the median plane
Median
plane

• Divides the body into two

asymmetrical halves

• Also referred to as para-sagittal plane

8
CORONAL PLANES

• Vertical plane passing perpendicular

to the median plane

• Divides body into anterior and

posterior parts

• Also known as frontal plane

9
TRANSVERSE PLANES
• The only horizontal planes

• Passes perpendicular to median and frontal

planes

• Divide body into superior and inferior parts

• Also known as horizontal plane, axial, or

trans-axial plane

18
19
• Dorsum - usually refers to superior aspect
of any part that protrudes anteriorly from
the body

• Plantar – relating to the sole of the foot

• Palmar – relating to the palm of the hand

20
• The following terms of relationship and
comparisons are independent of the
anatomical position or planes:

1. Proximal – nearer to trunk or point of origin

2. Distal – farther from trunk or point of origin

21
3. Superficial

4. Intermediate

5. Deep

• The above terms describe position of structures relative to the surface

of the body
