CHAPTER 1

1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the project

Project work, a series of activities that allows the student to study, do research and act by
themselves using their abilities, interest, personal experiences and aptitudes, allows students
to think beyond their own syllabus and expand their horizons. This report has tried its best to
justify the above mentioned definition. The project is not prepared for any profitable
business. The purpose is solely the expansion of the horizon of the biology students to
understand the vast, staggering and wonderful world of biology.

fig 1.1 various aspect in biology

This paper attempts to clarify the interrelationship of various sciences with biology and
further elucidate the significance of biology. It attempts to clear the relationship between
the sciences and our daily life.
1.2. Objectives

Objectives were the guidelines followed for the successful completion of the project. The
objectives of the project are as follows

I. To develop better understanding of the subject biology as a whole.

ii. To elucidate on the importance of biology education in the current world and in day to
day practices

iii. to delve deeper into the relationship biology holds within other sciences as well.

1.3. Limitations

The project, although done with extreme focus and determination, is not without some
inevitable limitations. The project does not include any primary data. Primary data
couldn’t be collected due to unavoidable circumstance of risk if infection from covid
virus. In addition to that the project doesn’t hold all the branches of biological study

1.4 Rationale of the Project

Biology is the scientific study of life. It is a natural science with a broad scope but has
several unifying themes that tie it together as a single, coherent field. (Wikipedia, 2021).
Biology is a branch of science that deals with living organisms and their vital processes.
It encompasses diverse fields, including botany, conservation, ecology, evolution.
Genetics, marine biology, medicine, microbiology, physiology and zoology. (Britannica).
Biology in today’s world has become an important part of life. No matter who you are,
what you do, where you live, what is your lifestyle, you are an active member to give
plausible amount of effects to the biological world. Today we are surrounded by the
applications of biology everywhere; in the food we eat, in the clothes we wear, in the
technology we use, we can easily see the beauty of biology.

Understanding biology is a significant part of understanding the world. It is a gateway to

understand ourselves better. To grasp the concept of biology it is crucial that we
comprehend the relationship it has in other sciences as well. Not only that but perceiving
the subject biology helps us appreciate the subject more, which directly influences our
study. When we are interested we are more focused and understand the system more
easily.

In addition to that in today’s world of growing demands, biology van be a blessing to

increase our production and globally. Although there was a fall by about 1% in 2020 due
to the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic in the energy demands, global electricity
demand is set to grow by close to 5% in 2021 and 4% in 2022(inea) For the future itself
there needs to be the basic understanding of the subject as a whole.

The paper also aims to see the trend of biology in the recent years.
CHAPTER II

2. METHODOLOGY

2.1 Area of Study

Study was conducted with the extensive research on the internet. As the internet was used almost
all the parts of the world could be included in the research. Not only that but the project mainly
focuses on the current status of biology and the extensive field it has explored in the past

2.2 Data Collection Tools

The objective to understand the d=subject and the importance was fulfilled by the use of
technology. Internet, recorded interviews, recorded classes were greatly exploited to get the
information required.

2.3 Methods of Data Collection

Due to the unfortunate situation of COVID right now, the primary data collection method
couldn’t be used. However diverse methods of secondary data collection method were used
to increase the reliability of the research paper.

Books of various authors were checked. The library was used for the collection of data. In
addition to that different journals and study were used for the data collection. Quantitative
data were crossed checked through different mediums to minimize the errors. Various
experiments were consulted.
Therefore, in the current situation secondary data collection was used as it is the most suitable.

CHAPTER III

FINDINGS

The major findings of the project can be discussed in the following topics
Biology and biology education

Science is an objective logical and repeatable attempt to understand the principles and forces
operating in the natural universe. Science is derived from the Latin word ‘scientia’ which means
to know. The word biology was first time appeared in the book named Bibliotheca botanica
which was written by Swedish scientist Carl Linnaeus. Biology gets its name from two Greek
words ‘bios’ and ‘logos’ meaning life and study respectively. Biology makes the relations
between different elements of living world.

Biology is subdivided into separate branches for convenience of study, though all the
subdivisions are interrelated by basic principles. Thus, while it is custom to separate the study of
plants (botany) from that of animals (zoology), and the study of the structure of organisms
(morphology) from that of function (physiology), all living things share in common certain
biological phenomena—for example, various means of reproduction, cell division, and the
transmission of genetic material. Biology is often approached on the basis of levels that deal with
fundamental units of life. At the level of molecular biology, for example, life is regarded as a
manifestation of chemical and energy transformations that occur among the many chemical
constituents that compose an organism. As a result of the development of increasingly powerful
and precise laboratory instruments and techniques, it is possible to understand and define with
high precision and accuracy not only the ultimate physiochemical organization (ultrastructure) of
the molecules in living matter but also the way living matter reproduces at the molecular level.
Especially crucial to those advances was the rise of genomics in the late 20th and early 21st
centuries. Biology as a subject holds a tremendous significance in humankind as it has helped
people to obtain knowledge about life and living organisms their growth, evolution, structure,
distribution, function, etc. it helps people understand the diversity of life form and their
conservation and exploitation.

Table1 trend of development in biology

Thus, we have come a long way from just classifying to making a clone and robotic limbs that
are controlled by neural transmitters. In today’s world we are entangled in biological education.

Biology in Health and Medicine

Biological concepts form the core essence of health and medicine record the scope of Biology in
the field of health and medicine is in every health worker like doctors, nurses, HA, radiologist
pathologist chemist sector come from biological background. Cannot study medicine without
biology. Biology is the stepping stone. In this case learning biology is like learning how to walk
and learning medicine is finally being able to run. moreover, in the field of health medicine is
based on the biological discoveries and innovations. a variety of medicine prepared from plants
and animals it is based on biological knowledge. Virology, Mycology, and Pharmacology are
some of the sub-sciences (here he goes again) that medicine deal with and need day and night. we
have different vaccination to protect us we control eliminate various diseases.
Moreover, molecular understanding of biology plays the major role in guiding drug discovery,
and molecular-level understanding of biology is fundamental in developing diagnostic methods

In the world of public health care, biology plays a significant role in identifying the causes of
diseases, how they are transmitted and how they can be controlled. We explore environmental
concerns, the scientific basis for prevention, including vaccination and the human behaviors that
affect the health of a community.
Biology in agriculture

Biology in agriculture can be savior and a boon for the entire mankind. With increasing
population and demands but limited resources we need to find ways to produce more in less
which can be obtained through biology.

Agricultural biology is concerned with the discovery of the genetic, physiological, and

biochemical bases of heterosis in agricultural plants and animals, the selection of parental pairs
during hybridization, the use of polyploidic plants, and the study of artificial mutagenesis.

Biology provides knowledge about plants and animals which is a base line for every agricultural
practices. Advancement in Biology has developed genetically advanced hybrid plants and
animals which increases the production rate. Biology has helped to produce organic fertilizers
that make soil fertile without any environmental pollution. It has also helped to understand the
activities like pollination, water absorption, ecological balance, decomposition which are all
related to agriculture

In the world of agriculture, nanotechnology is being increasingly used. The ambition of

nanomaterials in agriculture is to reduce the amount of spread chemicals, minimize nutrient
losses in fertilization and increased yield through pest and nutrient management.
Nanotechnology has the prospective to improve the agriculture and food industry with novel
Nano tools for the controlling of rapid disease diagnostic, enhancing the capacity of plants to
absorb nutrients among others. many potential benefits such as enhancement of food quality and
safety, reduction of agricultural inputs, enrichment of absorbing nanoscale nutrients from the
soil, etc. allow the application of nanotechnology to be resonant encumbrance.

Along with that biology is also a recurring subject in the field of animal husbandry. Animal
science is the study of animals that live alongside humans. Around the world, humans rely on
animals for food, fiber, labor and companionship. Animal scientists help us understand and
manage these animals.
Biology in chemistry

in modern biology we have a whole different branch called biochemistry to deal with the
relationship with these two fundamental sciences. It overlaps with chemistry in explaining the
structure and function of all cellular processes at the molecular level. Several important chemical
concepts are treated in detail in the sections that follow. When applied in later sections, these
chemical concepts will allow you to construct greater meaning of the more complex biological
principles. To understand the chemicals of our body we need understanding of biology. A lot of
living bodies have chemicals and elements in them that need our understanding. We understand
the biological molecules like DNA, RNA, lipids, carbohydrate etc.

Biology in field of engineering

Although a surprising pair, it is true that these two have a close relationship with each other. Bio
systems engineering emphasizes the application of engineering principles to biologically-based
systems (i.e., systems that include plants, animals, microorganisms, or humans). A bio systems
engineering program is designed to give students knowledge of the fundamental principles of
engineering and to introduce biological concepts to enable these engineers to successfully
interact with relevant professionals when solving engineering problems involving biological
systems. In field of agriculture, bioprocessing specialization we see the extensive use of biology.

Biology in field of industry

natural resources are processed in a sustainable manner for a number of end products through the
knowledge of biology Industries that utilize plants and animals require knowledge of biological
concepts and principles likewise a one of the biggest sources of pollution the study of Biology
helps to minimize the impact of pollution hazards moreover identify the edible portion of plants
and animals with their nutritive value with intern develop a base for many food industries Today,
the use of biology in industry is both strong and increasing. Applications range from traditional
areas such as food to newer markets such as renewable energy. In all cases, the potential for
increased use of biology will be enhanced by advances in the scale at which biological systems
can be engineered.
Fig 4.1: bio-based productions

Biology in our daily works

Biology is important to everyday life because it allows humans to better understand their bodies,
their resources and potential threats in the environment. Biology is the study of all living things,
so it helps people to understand every organism alive, from the smallest bacteria to California
redwoods and blue whales.

Biology is a part of our future too. It is here we can find solutions to today’s grave problems. The
global warming, climate change increasing pollution, populations, energy demands, UV
radiations etc. it also helps in removing our social stigmas by giving us facts. Rural society
believes it’s the inability of a woman to produce a male child but in reality it’s the male
chromosome that determines the sex of a fetus. It helps us correct our nutrition intake, helps in
maintain proper lifestyle, helps in enjoying the nature without causing much harm.
CHAPATER IV

CONCLUSIONS AND DISCUSSIONS

Biology is an inescapable part of human life. It has been a central science from the past and
continues to be one in today’s era as well. Understanding biology can be helpful in
understanding the world around us, its problems and effective solutions. It is connected to
physics, chemistry, geography, engineering. It serves as an integral part in medicine, public
health, agriculture, animal husbandry. This paper effectively shows all the major significance of
biology and its education along with its ties to other different sciences.

In Nepal as well we see growing importance of biology. Nepal is inherently an agricultural

country slowly advancing towards industrialization. To make the transition smooth and effective
we need the profound knowledge of biology.

Understanding the importance of biology though important in not enough. We need to

incorporate the understanding into our daily life’s and plans and policies to develop individually,
socially and globally. More research and implementation should be encouraged then surely,
gradually we can make our earth an even better place to live.
