PLAN OF INVESTIGATION
The topic I have chosen is natural disasters/earthquakes. My reason for this topic is because I

could tell that a lot of Jamaicans including myself barely know about the different natural

disasters and how to prepare for it. I chose this topic because curiosity has led me to wanting to

find out more about how earthquakes can affect us and how we can prepare for an earthquake at

any given time and what items we need in our houses.

By completing this SBA, I will gain more knowledge about my topic and can share this

information with others. As an English Language student, my summary writing skills will be

developed. I expect my research and analysis to improve the Materials I intend to use for a poem

and songs for my article.

ARTIFACT 1

Edited: by tristena2

earth shakes
the earth shakes and splits
no milk shake or banana split for sure
as a hole opens in the backyard
I peer down into its emptiness
until my vision doubles
my brain hurts
a crack appears on my ceramic shell
what do you want of me I plead
it gapes back stupidly, implacably
I throw in my wealth
my tesla hybrid
my living room sofa
my triple whoppers, fries, and Butterfinger shakes
my 147-channel cable tv console
my twenty-four-volume encyclopedia set
my complete treasury of modern poets
I throw in my three children
and the wife for good measure
the ground trembles
and I tumble
as the earth closes

The Earthquake Song (Bonus)

The Little Girls
‘There's going to be an earthquake in this town
There will be houses falling down
The fire hydrants will blow up
The streets will crack, the pipes will pop
It's going kill my mom and dad
They are the only folks I had
But they better not blame me
Cause it's not my fault
It's always fun living in L.A.
Always a good show on somewhere, what more can I say
There's going to be an earthquake, I can't miss it, no way
I'm going to run, run, run
We're having so much fun
Cause there's a building chasing me
Smack, smack, I just fell in a crack
And now I'm part of the debris
There's going to be an earthquake in this town
The dogs are chasing their tails around
There's a buzzing in the air
Maybe I'll die, but I don't care
My surfboard's ready for the tidal wave
I'm going to ride down Sunset like a Beach Boy today
I only hope I don't wipe-out in West L.A.
Yes, I enjoy living life this way
Always a good show on somewhere, what more can I say
It's going to be an earthquake, I can't miss it, no way
I'm going to run, run, run
We're having so much fun
Cause there's a building chasing me
Jump up, jump back
Break your mother's back
And we'll all fall in the sea
Wee
It's always fun living in L.A.
Always a good show on somewhere, what more can I say
It's going to be an earthquake, going to get me
It's going to be an earthquake, going to get me
It's going to be an earthquake, going to get me today
Songwriters: Mick Walker, Caron Maso.

by Ella Wheeler Wilcox

The meadow and the mountain with desire
Gazed on each other, till a fierce unrest
Surged 'neath the meadow's seemingly calm breast,
And all the mountain's fissures ran with fire.

A mighty river rolled between them there.

What could the mountain do but gaze and burn?
What could the meadow do but look and yearn,
And gem its bosom to conceal despair?

Their seething passion agitated space,

ill, lo! the lands a sudden earthquake shook,
The river fled: the meadow leaped, and took
The leaning mountain in a close embrace.
REFLECTION 1

Before this research I was unaware of the severe effects of earthquakes, because of my lack of

experience with drastic earthquakes in Jamaica. In the first article that explored my topic “Earth

shakes”, edited by Tristena2 you could notice in that topic that it speaks on the damages that

earthquakes cause. It shows you how terrible an earthquake can be, for instance, roads opening,

the earth shaking and people's houses being damaged. Reading the article I was made aware of

the extreme results of an earthquake.

Secondly, the song ‘The Little Girls’ by Mick Walker, Caron Maso is warning the people of the

town that an earthquake is coming stating that houses are going to be blown down, people are

going to suffer how they were enjoying life and then boom an earthquake comes and ruins it all.

This song/ artifact enlightened about the various challenges that can occur during an earthquake.

Finally, the poem by Ella Wheeler Wilcox is about how lovely this place is, how calm and quiet

then suddenly all the mountain fissures ran, a mighty river rolled between them, the river fled,

and there was a massive earthquake. This poem shows how unpredictable and disastrous an

earthquake can be.

Reflection 2

Firstly, the poem ‘ Earth Shakes’ edited: by tristena2 uses hyperbole, for example, ‘I throw
in my wealth’. This is effective as it shows how powerful an earthquake can be, that people are

willing to give up everything they possess (their wealth).

Secondly, the song ‘The Little Girls’ uses repetition such as ‘ It's going to be an

earthquake, going to get me. It's going to be an earthquake, going to get [Link]'s going to be an

earthquake, going to get me today’. This shows how afraid the writer is of the earthquake

because he or she is aware how dangerous an earthquake can be.

Lastly, the poem by Ella Wheeler Wilcox uses personification for example ‘ The river fled:
the meadow leaped…’. This shows how an earthquake can happen without warning for example in the poem it causes the river
to rise and interrupt a calm environment.
Reflection 3

This SBA has helped me to be more knowledgeable and be able to educate others, such

as my younger brother, other family members, and even friends to let them also be aware and

take the necessary precautions in order to be safe. It also helped me to take earthquakes

seriously and make effective preparations.

The skills I have gained in this English A SBA assignment are an improvement in my
typing skills, my vocabulary was expanded, and it helped me to practice my summary writing
skills.
In the beginning of this SBA I was not interested in this topic but by finishing this SBA I
gained a better understanding of earthquakes and their effects.
Written Report

Our group decided to use Latrell McKenzie Artifacts. It was really informative, impactful, and

to the point in our topic but most of all we liked it. Our group has a very strong cooperative spirit

meaning we work well together but that does not mean we don’t clash on certain matters.

In the past few weeks in which our group has been doing SBA there were certain qualities and

tricks that we have picked up and used but we did not just blink and it came to us, no we wired

hard, we bonded together and it taught us to be social with on another and in the end we made it

thus far. We have had many debates and discussions on our topic and came to conclusions one

after another. We have searched many websites for our information we disseminated it and
added

it into our SBA’s.

On December 22, 2022 we discussed the artifacts and reflection and also the problems plaguing

us with them so we can fix dem together

On January 19 2023 we discussed and contemplate on the group report and how to do it
