ACT 1

EXT. BENCH OUTSIDE GALLERY (EVENING)

2 GIRLS (AROUND 18) SAT ON A BENCH AT SUNSET. THE SCENE IS MOVING IN

SLOW MOTION. ONE OF THE GIRLS (ANAYA BURTON) TURNS TO MAKE EYE
CONTACT WITH THE OTHER GIRL (EVELYN MONROE), WHO SHARES A SOFT
BUT SLIGHTLY UNEASED SMILE.

ANAYA (V.O)
Evelyn Monroe was my rock. I met her only 2 years ago…

EXT. SCHOOL YARD (DAY)

ANAYA IS WALKING UP A HILL ALONE AS GROUPS OF STUDENTS PUSH PAST

HER IN A HURRY. SHE APPEARS UNCOMFORTABLE AND LOST. A CLOSE UP
SHOT OF A SMILING AND SOCIAL EVELYN, WHO IS TALKING TO SOMEONE
OFF-SCREEN. SHE TURNS TO FACE THE CAMERA, AS IF FROM ANAYA’S POV.
SHE WAVES, SIGNALLING ANAYA TO COME OVER.

ANAYA (V.O)
…on a nerve-wrecking start at a new school.
I was searching for salvation in a sea of
foreign faces, her wave was my guide.

EVELYN
Hey! Anaya, right?

ANAYA
Yeah, hi.

EVELYN
I’m Evelyn, I’ve been asked to show you around the campus!

ANAYA
Oh okay, cool.

ANAYA (V.O)
Lynn is one of those people who always seems to be in the right place at the
right time- saying the right thing.

EXT. BOTTOM OF A HILL (AFTERNOON)

POV SHOT-REVERSE-SHOT OF EVELYN PULLING ANAYA’S HAND IN

ENCOURAGEMENT TO GET UP A HILL. THEY HAVE BACKPACKS ON AND
EVELYN IS HOLDING A BLANKET.
ANAYA (V.O)
She pushed me out of my comfort zone; drove me to experience all of the
wonders that I’d otherwise be too scared to face.

EXT. THE TOP OF THE HILL (CONTINUED)

EVELYN AND ANAYA ARE SAT ON A PICNIC BLANKET, EATING FOOD AND
TAKING PICTURES.

ANAYA (V.O)
I had never had a friend like Lynn. She was my sunshine on a shitty day; she
felt like my soulmate in the form of a best friend.

EXT. RIVER PIER (AFTERNOON)

THE GIRLS SAT BY THE RIVER, FEEDING THE DUCKS. EVELYN IS SMOKING A
CIGARETTE, ANAYA IS NOT. WHEN OFFERED IT, SHE SMILES BUT SHAKES HER
HEAD TO INSINUATE THAT SHE DOESN’T SMOKE.

ANAYA (V.O)
We were fast friends too, soon to be spending all of our breaks together.
Everything about us simply clicked, as if it was fate.

INT. CLASSROOM (DAY)

EVELYN (whisper)

Hey Naya.

ANAYA (whisper)

Yeah?

EVELYN

Are you doing anything after school…?

ANAYA SHAKES HER HEAD.

EVELYN

…do you want to? Cause I’m meant to meet some friends, small group, and
it’d be cool if you could come too.

ANAYA (hesitantly)
I mean, I’d have to check with my dad.

EVELYN

Girl do it right now, I promise it’ll be fun.

ANAYA TAKES HER PHONE OUT OF HER POCKET, THE SOUND OF THE GIRLS
TALKING AND THE CLASSROOM FADES OUT TO AN ECHO.

ANAYA (V.O)
And that is how it began. It was like a gate to this new world, Evelyn’s world.

EXT. SKATEPARK (evening)

SMALL GROUP OF TEENAGERS, MALE AND FEMALE, DRINKING AND

LAUGHING UNDER A SHELTER. THERE IS A SPEAKER BLASTING MUSIC,
WHICH WE CAN FAINTLY HEAR OVER THE NARRATION, AND EVELYN’S
LAUGH IS PREVALENT.

ANAYA (V.O)

She had plenty of friends, we always hung out with such a variety of people.
And she was right, it was fun- really fun.

AS ANAYA EXPLAINS HOW ‘FUN’ IT WAS, WE WATCH HER REST HER HEAD ON
A GUY’S SHOULDER, WITH A SMILE ON HER FACE.

EXT. SKATEPARK (evening)

CUT TRANSITION TO ANAYA SAT IN THE SAME LOCATION, BUT COMPLETELY

ALONE. SHE IS LISTENING TO MUSIC THROUGH EARPHONES AND HER FACE
APPEARS CALM, YET EMPTY. SHE RECEIVES A MESSAGE NOTIFICATION FROM
‘DAD’ ON HER PHONE. THE TEXT MESSAGES READS ‘ARE YOU OK? WHEN ARE
U COMING HOME?’, SHE RESPONDS ’20 MINS’ AND WALKS OUT OF FRAME.

The contrast between Anaya’s tentative participation in classroom interactions and the more liberated experience at the skatepark reveals significant character development. In the classroom, Anaya's hesitance and dependence on Evelyn's encouragement to join social activities highlight her initial discomfort and uncertainty . Conversely, at the skatepark, she is seen more integrated and accepting of the social environment, even if eventually reflecting solitude . This progression from reliance to tentative autonomy showcases her gradual adaptation and growth, navigating personal and social landscapes .

Anaya's perception of Evelyn transforms from viewing her as a source of security and excitement to reflecting a sense of emptiness when left alone. Initially, Anaya describes Evelyn in glowing terms, attributing her ease and guidance as pivotal during a nerve-wracking new school experience . However, the use of voice-over narration juxtaposed with visual shifts—Anaya resting her head on a friend's shoulder versus sitting alone—illustrates this change . This use of contrast and visual storytelling underscores Anaya's realization of the temporal and sometimes isolating aspects of personal growth and the integration into a new social world .

The text suggests that Anaya's journey is about self-discovery by juxtaposing her initial isolation with eventual integration into Evelyn’s social world. The narrative begins with Anaya feeling lost at a new school and finding solace in Evelyn's friendship, which catalyzes her excursion into unfamiliar social territories . As Anaya navigates this newfound world, the solitude depicted in later scenes indicates contemplation and introspection, suggesting a parallel journey of self-awareness and personal reflection beyond mere social expansion . This dual focus underscores that the experiences shared with Evelyn serve as a conduit for Anaya's internal growth and self-discovery .

The smaller, everyday moments shared between Anaya and Evelyn play a critical role in establishing the authenticity and depth of their relationship. Scenes such as sharing a picnic on a hill or feeding ducks by the river imbue the narrative with a sense of intimacy and genuine connection . These moments contrast with larger group settings, highlighting the personal bond that exists amidst broader social interactions. The inclusion of such intimate scenes allows the audience to witness the foundation of Anaya's emotional reliance on Evelyn, thereby enhancing the story’s exploration of meaningful friendship and personal change .

Evelyn serves as a catalyst in Anaya's life by introducing her to a broader social world and encouraging her to engage with it. Anaya's internal voice-over narration throughout the scenes underscores this influence, where she describes Evelyn as being 'always in the right place at the right time' and 'pushing her to experience wonders she would otherwise fear' . These narrative techniques of voice-over and selective scene placement, such as the inviting wave or the shared picnic on the hill, emphasize Evelyn's critical role in facilitating Anaya's personal transition from isolation to social integration .

The relationship between Anaya and Evelyn is depicted as deeply transformative and supportive. Evelyn serves as a guide and companion to Anaya, helping her navigate the complexities of a new school environment. This bond is highlighted through Anaya's reflections, noting that Evelyn always said the right things and pushed her out of her comfort zone, leading Anaya to experience new adventures . This dynamic portrays themes of friendship as a crucial element in personal growth, emphasizing how relationships can challenge individuals to confront their fears and embrace new experiences .

The skatepark setting serves as a backdrop for the progression of Anaya's emotional journey. Initially depicted as a vibrant social space with laughter and music where Evelyn's social circle provides a sense of belonging and fun for Anaya . However, the transition to Anaya sitting alone in the same location later underscores a shift in her emotional state, conveying solitude and introspection. This dual use of the setting effectively highlights how physical spaces can reflect changing internal landscapes and the ephemeral nature of social connections .

The transient nature of belonging is illustrated through Anaya's fluctuating experience of connection and isolation. Initially, visual elements depict her integrated into Evelyn's vibrant social circle at the skatepark, suggesting a sense of belonging . However, this is contrasted by the subsequent scene where Anaya sits alone, which visually and narratively conveys the ephemeral quality of these social bonds . The juxtaposition of lively group dynamics with personal moments of solitude underscores the idea that belonging can be fleeting, influenced by the ever-changing dynamics of social relationships and personal growth .

Voice-over narration is a pivotal tool in unveiling Anaya’s internal conflicts and emotions, providing a layer of introspection and personal commentary absent in dialogues. Through Anaya's voice-over, her thoughts on the initial unease and subsequent admiration for Evelyn become clear, painting a picture of her reliance and emotional journey . This device allows for a nuanced exploration of Anaya’s internal struggles, such as her hesitation when deciding to join Evelyn’s group, thereby reflecting her nuanced emotional landscape and evolving views on friendship and self-worth .

Anaya’s internal monologue provides a window into her emotional world and perception of her relationship with Evelyn, enriching the narrative. By framing Evelyn as 'my rock' and citing specific instances where Evelyn guided her through new experiences, the monologue illustrates the depth of their friendship and Evelyn's impact on her life . This narrative device allows the audience to access Anaya's inner thoughts and feelings that are not explicit in her external interactions, thereby offering a layered understanding of their connection and emphasizing themes of dependence and transformation .
