Adjusting A40G Cooling Fan Motor

1) This document provides instructions for checking and adjusting the low rpm of the cooling fan motor and charge air cooler on certain Volvo A40G models. 2) The procedure involves using various tools to measure hydraulic pressure and fan speed, and adjusting the low pressure setting if needed to achieve the correct specifications. 3) Precautions are outlined such as ensuring the fan area is clear during testing and not adjusting pressure with the engine running. Correct pressure and rpm values are specified in another document.

This operation also includes required tools and times for applicable parts of the following operations:

Hydraulic pressure, specifications

Service positions

NOTE!
The method should be performed using service tool Tech Tool 26351-3 Hydraulic cooling fan, test. Measuring can be done with a
tachometer and/or pressure gauge. In case worn hydraulic motor is suspected, use both measuring methods so that pressure
and rpm can be compared.

Conditions for checking and adjusting fan speed:

When adjusting the fan speed, a number of conditions must be fulfilled.

Check the fan and its mounting before the test so there are no cracks or damages.
The hydraulic oil temperature should be between 20–40 °C(68–104 °F). The hydraulic oil temperature is read off on the
operator's display in service mode. See Service mode, description.
NOTE!
Tips: The hydraulic oil temperature can be increased faster by running the engine at increased idle and at the same time
holding the dump lever in its front position.
WARNING

Do not cut off the electric power by the hydraulic pump to check and measure the fan speed. The fan overspeeds and there is
risk of injury and machine damage.
Check

1. Place the machine in service position, see Service positions

2. Lower the front grill and pump up the engine hood.

Pressure gauge

3. Clean around pressure check connection M9 that is located under the solenoid valve (MA2606) by the charge-air cooler.

4. Connect 11666051 Pressure gauge and 14290266 Hose to the pressure check connection.

5. Remove the protective netting from the fan.

6. Fasten a piece of reflective tape on one of the cooling fan's rotor blades.

7. Install the protective netting on the fan.

NOTE!
The engine may not be started without the protective netting correctly installed.

8. Start the test 26351-3 Hydraulic cooling fan, test in Tech Tool, select low rpm.

9. Install the tachometer so that the sensor points at the rotor blades. Avoid standing in front of the fan. Check that the
pressure and rpm of the fan follow each other.

10. Start the engine.

NOTE!
Let the engine idle until the fan speed is stable before reading off
WARNING
Keep the area in front of the fan clear during the test.

11. Read off the pressure with the pressure gauge, or the rpm on the tachometer.
For correct pressure or rpm at low fan speed, see Hydraulic pressure, specifications
If the pressure is correct but the rpm still is too low, check the shut-off valve MA2606 so that it is not jammed or
leaking.

Adjusting

WARNING
Do not remain under the machine when the engine is running.

12. Turn off the engine.

P6 (controlled by PWM2602) for brake charging and radiator's fan motor. Brake charging has priority.

NOTE!
If adjusting is needed, the engine must be off.

Mechanical setting of pump pressure (low and high) affects the software-controlled max. rpm of the fan.

2. Control current
3. Fan speed (rpm) range

Loosen the lock nut and adjust the pressure.

NOTE!
To decrease the pressure, turn counter-clockwise. To increase the pressure, turn clockwise. Adjusting the low pressure
also affects the high pressure (in the relationship 1:3) For example, increasing by 2 bar (29 psi) increases the high
pressure by ≈ 6 bar (87 psi). The opposite applies when adjusting the high pressure. For correct pressure, see Hydraulic
pressure, specifications.

3. Adjusting screw, low pressure for coolant cooling fan
4. Adjusting screw, brake pressure

15. Lock the screw with the nut.

16. Start the engine and check the pressure again. Read off with the pressure gauge or tachometer. Repeat the procedure
until correct pressure is obtained.

17. Check the high pressure as well.

18. Turn off the engine.

19. Remove the pressure gauge, hose, tachometer, and the piece of tape.

20. Fit the protective plate.

21. Close the engine hood and lift the front grille.

22. Restore the machine from service position.
