1. Introductory
Summer placement (summer internship programme, i.e., now popularly known as SIP), is an integral part of the academic curriculum of 24 months MMS course in Sterling Institute of management Studies, Navi Mumbai affiliated to University of Mumbai. For the successful completion of the MMS Course, the students are required to complete the SIP. The period for the training is about two months, tentatively from 1 May to 30 June .
st
After completion of the 1st year of the MMS programme, i.e., after the 2nd semester and before the commencement of the second year of the programme, the students are required to work with a corporate organization/ Company for hands on experience. The duration of the SIP is eight weeks. In some cases this period may be a little longer, but in no case the duration should be more than 10 weeks.
2. Objective of the Summer Internship Project :
1. To provide an all encompassing exposure to the student of hands on experience in a corporate environment. 2. To ensure that the company gets adequate return from the students in terms of the money and time he/she spends on them during the training so that there is a mutual return of experience and learning. 3. To provide a platform for the corporate people to test the reliability, quality and performance of the students and make a match for final job offer later if they so deem fit.
3. Significance of SIP
SIP aims at widening the student's perspective by providing an exposure to real life organizational and environmental situations. This will enable the students to explore and understand an industry/organization, build a relationship with a prospective employer, or simply sharpen their skills in a familiar field. SIP also provides invaluable knowledge and networking experience to the students. During the internship, the student has the chance to put whatever he/she learned in the 1st year of MBA into practice while

working on a business plan or trying out a new industry, job function or organization. The organization, in turn, benefits from the objective and unbiased perspective the student provides based on concepts and skills learnt in the institute. The summer interns also serve as unofficial spokespersons of the organization and help in image building on campus. Some ideal projects for summer internships can be in the areas of strategy formulation, business process reengineering, MIS, ERP implementation, retail/investment banking, industry analysis, new product launches, sales and distribution, market research and advertising, etc., among others. However, this is not an exhaustive list of areas but can be varied to suit the requirements of the organizations where the student has to undergo internship. In some cases, even field work can also become an integral part of SIP. The student need not shy away from taking up such projects. An additional benefit that organizations may derive is the unique opportunity to evaluate the student from a long-term perspective. Thus the SIP can become a gateway for final placement of the student. The student should ensure that the data and other information used in the study report is obtained with the permission of the institution concerned. The students should also behave ethically and honestly with the organization.
4. Procedure of SIP
The SIP process involves working under the mentorship of an executive of the concerned organization and also with a faculty member of the institute where the student is studying. The student is expected to first understand the organization and its setting and the industry/field in which the organization is operating. Thereafter, the student is expected to concentrate on the specific topic of study, its objectives, its rationale, and adopt a methodology and identify a suitable analysis procedure for the completion of the study. Wherever possible the student may provide recommendations and action plans, along with the findings of the study. Thereafter, the student should prepare a report and submit one copy to the organization and one copy each to the institute and the university. The student should also obtain a certificate from the organization/s where the

SIP was carried out and attach the same with the copy submitted to the institute. The university will arrange for evaluation of the SIP reports submitted by the students.
5. Supervision of Progress in SIP: (Management Support Mechanism)
Each student will pursue the project under the guidance of corporate guide (appointed by the corporate organization) as well as faculty guide (appointed by the Institute). Regular feedback is taken both from the Guide/ Tutor as well as the Intern. So, during the training the student will be under the supervision of his/her corporate guide. He/she will provide guidelines on how the student should work during the stay with the organization. In addition, each student will be guided by a faculty guide of SIMS. The student will be required to report to the faculty guide immediately after joining the company for the project. The student is required to meet the faculty guide before departing for the summer training and take necessary instruction from him/her. Each student will send weekly report on every Saturday during the two months time period to the faculty guide about the progress done in the SIP.
The faculty guide will consult the corporate guide from time to time for obtaining information on the progress of the Project work of the student.
6. Conduct / Discipline:
1. SIP is a platform where students can learn professionalism not only in the efficiency of the work but also effectiveness in the behavior, personality and code of conduct, so the students are required to abide by the rules of the organization where they are undergoing their training. 2. No student is allowed to change the organization of training assigned to him/ her. In case such a thing happens the summer project will be considered invalid.

3. In case a student has to take leave of absence, he/she has to take necessary permission from the organization and the faculty guide before he/she proceeds on leave. 5. In case the student is to take up project based work at the instance of the company he/she should conduct it to his/her best capabilities under the guidance of the faculty/corporate guide. 6. No student should try to copy or use information, in such a way that it will project false and baseless information for the company. All students are required to maintain strict confidentiality of any information they come across in the organizations in course of their training. The student involved in any malpractice shall be duly penalized.
7. Project Report:
All the students have to prepare and submit a written project report at the end of the training.
