Anna's Overtime Dilemma

Anna has been working late nights all week to prepare the perfect presentation for her boss, Mr. Lime. She falls asleep at her desk from exhaustion. Her coworkers note that she has been "burning the candle at both ends" and "putting in the hours", working more than is sustainable. They worry that if she isn't careful, she will "burn out". Anna finally realizes she needs to get proper rest and not overwork herself before her important presentation.

It's late at the offices of Tiptop Trading. Anna's alone, working again. She's been doing this this all week.
She wants her presentation to Mr. Lime to be perfect, so she's spending hours and hours on it.

[00:00:32.760] - Speaker 2
Anna, don't interrupt. I'm busy.

[00:00:35.710] - Speaker 3
Whoa.

[00:00:36.530] - Speaker 2
Sorry.

[00:00:37.280] - Speaker 1
Anna, you're really burning the candle at both ends.

[00:00:40.710] - Speaker 2
What?

[00:00:41.310] - Speaker 1
Burning the candle at both ends. It means working very hard, working late, and getting up early to work all
the time.

[00:00:49.630] - Speaker 2
Oh, I didn't know that expression.

[00:00:51.910] - Speaker 1
Well, here are some more. You're doing overtime, which means you're working longer than office hours.
You're putting in the hours, which means you're spending all the time needed to achieve something.

[00:01:04.960] - Speaker 2
Yes, I'm putting in the hours to make sure my presentation is perfect.

[00:01:09.320] - Speaker 1
And if you don't mind me saying so, you might burn out, which means you're working so hard, you might
get very tired and run out of energy.

[00:01:18.120] - Speaker 2
I'm not burning out. I'm full of energy. I just need to finish this bit.

[00:01:32.910] - Speaker 4
My goodness. Nothing's locked. Do you think we've been burgled?

[00:01:37.490] - Speaker 3
Oh, no. I left my lapbook and my MePad on the desk. And my ItoP. They were thousands. They're all the
latest versions.

[00:01:47.410] - Speaker 4
And I left out my elephant mug and my lady curved nail file. They better not have stolen them.

[00:01:55.830] - Speaker 2
But it's premium. Premium falls orange. Premium.

[00:02:03.270] - Speaker 3
Anna?

[00:02:04.550] - Speaker 4
It's Anna. She's asleep.

[00:02:07.550] - Speaker 2
Anna oh, lemons. Denise tom, have you spent the night.

[00:02:13.280] - Speaker 3
Asleep at York desk?

[00:02:14.420] - Speaker 2
Anna, is it morning? Oh, dear. Yes, I think so.

[00:02:19.390] - Speaker 4
Well, at least we haven't been burgled, then.

[00:02:23.630] - Speaker 3
Anna, you've really been burning the candle at both ends lately.

[00:02:28.110] - Speaker 4
Yes. You've been doing hours and hours of overtime. Most people get their work done within office hours.
And anyway, we don't pay overtime here. You'll never find me working late.

[00:02:41.340] - Speaker 3
Yeah, I had noticed that, actually, Denise.

[00:02:43.530] - Speaker 2
But this presentation must be perfect.

[00:02:46.390] - Speaker 4
If you're not careful, you'll burn out. Then you'll really be of no use to anyone. You'll be as useful as a
chocolate teapot.

[00:02:58.090] - Speaker 3
It's good that you're putting in the hours, Anna, but you should calm down. And look at me. I do very
successful presentations without spending hours preparing. Ah. In my presentation to every apple, I just
swooped in with no preparation. After a night on the town, I charmed them. They love me.

[00:03:19.120] - Speaker 1
Idiot. I bet he actually spent hours preparing. He just can't admit it.

[00:03:25.010] - Speaker 2
Well, maybe you're right. I can't think clearly anymore. I'm so tired. I need to sleep properly. Otherwise, I'll
end up trying to sell bananas instead of lemons.

[00:03:38.790] - Speaker 5
Anna has finally got the message. She's realized she's been working too much. She needs to be realistic.
Here's a reminder of some of the phrases we heard to talk about how much Anna had been working.

[00:03:52.490] - Speaker 3
Burning the candle at both ends, doing overtime, putting in the hours, burning out.

[00:04:04.090] - Speaker 5
Let's hope she's thinking clearly by the time she has to do her presentation. Join us next time to to find
out. Bye.
