Reproductive
System
Describe the parts of the reproductive
system and their functions.
Reproductive system
➢involved in sexual
reproduction
Male
Reproductive
System
Testes
produces
sperms
Scrotum
sac of skin
that holds
the testes
Penis
•deposits
sperms
into the
vagina
during
the
mating
Vas deferens
(tube)-
•carries
sperm
from
testes to
urethra
Urethra
•carries
sperm and
urine out of
the body
Glands- provide liquid in
which sperm can swim
•Seminal vesicle-
secretes a fluid
that makes up
the most of the
components of
the sperm
•Prostate gland-
secretes a
slightly alkaline
milky fluid that is
discharged as
part of the
semen
Bulbourethral
Gland (Cowper’s
gland)
•secretes a thick
and clear mucus
that lubricates and
neutralizes the any
trace of acidic
urine in the urethra
Pathway of Sperm Cells
seminiferous
epididymis vas deferens ampulla
tubules
urethra prostate gland ejaculatory ducts seminal vesicle
The Female Reproductive System
✓Functions:
• Produces female sex cells
• Receives sperm cells from
the male
• Nurtures the development
of and provides
nourishment for the new
individual
Ovary
•produces
egg cells
Oviduct-
•serves as
passageway
of eggs from
the ovary to
the uterus; site
of egg
fertilization
Uterus
•serves as site
of egg
implantation;
is where the
fertilized egg
develops
Vagina
•receives
the penis
of male
during
mating
Menstruation
•the monthly
changes that
take place in
the female
reproductive
system
• Pituitary glands controls and start the cycle.
• LH initiates the maturation of the follicles,
converts ruptured follicles into corpus luteum
and causes secretion of progesterone with
the FSH.
• Ovary release estrogen causes the uterine
lining to increase thickness so that the
fertilized egg can attach to it.
• Assume no sperm is present. The unfertilized
egg is lost and some blood is lost too.
Homeostasis
- state reached when each
part of the body functions in
equilibrium with other parts.
•Feedback Mechanism- process
through which the level of one substance
influences the level of another substance.
•Body temperature
•Amount of water in the body
•Amount of metabolic wastes in the cell
•Blood calcium level
•Hormones in the blood
Reproductive system disease
•Prostate cancer - Cancer of the prostate
gland
•Breast cancer - Cancer of the mammary
gland.
•Ovarian cancer - Cancer of the ovary.
•Penile cancer - Cancer of the penis.
•Uterine cancer - Cancer of the uterus.
• Testicular cancer - Cancer of the
testicle/(plural:testes).
• Cervical cancer - Cancer of the cervix.
• Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy- An
enlarged prostate gland can cause
uncomfortable urinary symptoms, such as
blocking the flow of urine out of the bladder
• HIV- Human Immunodeficiency Virus (virus)
• AIDS- Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome
(condition)
