CoC Class 1 Part A Mechanics ~ Dynamic Motion
1. The mass of a flywheel is 109 kg and its radius of gyration is 380 mm.
Calculate the moment of inertia of the flywheel.
Calculate the kinetic energy stored in it when rotating at 100 rev/min.
2. A steel block of mass 1.5 tonne is raised by a rope passing over a drum of 1.5 m
diameter. The drum has a mass of 0.5 tonne and a radius of gyration of 0.6 m.
‘The other end of the rope has a balancing mass of 0.9 tonne attached.
‘The engine driving the drum raises the stcel block with an acceleration of 1 m/s*.
The maximum speed of lifting the steel block is 2 mvs.
Caleulat
a) the rope tension in each side of the drum
b) the torque on the drum during acceleration
¢) the power required to lift the block at the maximum speed.

Woda ‘winding drum of mass 200 tons has a radius of gyration of 3 m.
"Find the constant torque required to raise the speed from 40 to 80 rev/min in 60
seconds if the friction torque is 15 kNm.
If the wheel is rotating freely at 80 rev/min and a brake is applied bringing it to
rest in 120 revolutions, find the brake torque assuming uniform retardation.
4. A shearing machine punches holes of 80 mm diameter in a metal plate of 12 mm.
thickness, the work expended per square millimetre of shearing force being 4.7 J.
The flywheel of the machine wholly supplies the energy for the shearing operation
experiencing a 15 percent reduction in speed during an operation, but regaining its
initial steady speed of 2 rev/s in 4 seconds after an operation has been completed.
The radius of gyration of the flywheel is 1 m
a) Estimate the mass of the flywheel and determine the steady driving torque supplied
to the flywheel shaft
5. A dynamically balanced flywheel and shaft has a total mass of 1230 kg.
‘A mass of 14 kg is attached to the flywheel at a radius of 200 mm from the centre
of rotation and the flywheel rotated at 3 rev/s.
Determine the maximum and minimum forces that would be experienced by the
bearings supporting the flywheel.MsR
(8)A flywheel is mounted on a 50 mm diameter shaft which is supported horizontally
‘on bearings. A cord is wound round the shaft and carries a mass of 20 kg at its free
end, The mass on being released from rest causes the shaft and the wheel to rotate
and descends 1.2 m in 16 seconds. In a similar manner, a mass of 25 kg causes the
rotation of the shaft and the wheel and falls 1 m in 12 seconds. Determine :
(Assume the bearing friction is the same on both instances).
a) the moment of inertia of the shaft and the flywheel
») the frictional torque lost in the bearings
7. A shearing machine has a flywheel of mass 2 tons and radius of gyration 1.25 m
which rotates at a maximum speed of 2 rev/s before commencing a shearing
operation. The energy required in shearing a plate is 30 kJ, 70 percent of
which is supplied by the flywheel.
If the shearing operation takes 3 seconds, determine :
a) the speed of the flywheel immediately after an operation
») the angular retardation of the flywheel during an operationDoe to.
