Climate Process
L- Latitude
O- Ocean Currents
W- Wind
E- Elevation
R- Relief
N- Near Water
Factor Description
Latitude Definition- The further you are away from the
equator, the less direct sunlight you receive
Diagram-
How is Niagara Affected- Since Niagara is
further away from the equator, it does not receive
direct sunlight. It takes the sun rays further to
travel to this area compared to regions near the
equator
Ocean Currents Definition- Ocean currents moving away from the
equator are warmer, and ocean currents moving
toward the equator are cooler
● The Gulf Stream brings warm water from
the tropics
Diagram-
How is Niagara Affected- Niagara receives its
weather conditions due to the Gulf stream
(precipitation). However, our weather is not
affected by the California ocean and the
precipitation collected by this current releases its
precipitation on the west side of mountain ranges
Wind Definition- Wind carries heat and moisture to
different areas. This can result in dry spells or heat
waves The earth has patterns of high and low
pressure belts which create wind belts
Diagram-
How is Niagara affected- Niagara is affected by
the westerlies wind (the wind blows from the
west)
Elevation Definition- At a higher elevation, there is less
pressure. So as air rises, the pressure decreases. As
a result, the air expands and cools
Diagram-
How is Niagara affected- Due to the
escarpment’s higher elevation, this part of Niagara
will be cooler than other parts which are lower.
Relief Definition- The relief of mountains affects
climate because they stand in the path of wind
systems and force air to rise over them.
Diagram-
How is Niagara Affected- The California current
is prevented from infecting Niagara Falls as the
precipitation that is gathered is relieved at the
Rocky Mountains. However, since there are no
mountains, the Gulf Stream has a direct affect on
this region (no blockage)
Near Water Definition- Water heats and cools more slowly
than land. Therefore, in the summer, the coastal
regions will stay cooler and in winter warmer.
Proximity to a water body determines the amount
of precipitation.
● Maritime- climate near an ocean
● Continental- climate in areas far from the
ocean
How is Niagara Affected- Since Niagara is
surrounded by the great lakes (Lake Erie) our
weather (precipitation) is affected by this body of
water.
