Awareness of Electrical Safety in EIM Students

This document discusses the background and context of determining the level of awareness of electrical safety among grade 12 TVL-EIM students at Palo National Highschool. Electrical safety is important as hazards like arc flash and shock can cause death if exposed. However, with proper control measures, attention to detail, and technical competence, the likelihood of these hazards can be reduced. The researcher aims to determine the level of awareness of electrical safety risks among the students and identify factors that could cause harm.

LEVEL OF AWARENESS IN TERMS OF ELECTRICAL SAFETY OF THE

GRADE 12 TVL-EIM STUDENTS OF PALO NATIONAL HIGHSCHOOL

Background of the study

Safety should be defined as the reduction of risk to level that is low as

reasonable and is practicable. it is state of mind and environment that must

become an integral part of each working procedure. (Manik ,et al 2015). Safety is

practical certainty that injury will not results from the use of electrical substance

or agents, equipment’s (Williams, 2008). Machines, under specified condition or

quality and manner of use.( kumbhar et al.,2012)

Electrical safety awareness for the electrical becomes necessary that

people start learning to use electrical safety. It plays significant role in enhancing

safety lives and property. Most of the accident that occurs are due either to

carelessness or lack of knowledge and awareness of some basic rules that should

be observed when using electricity (network n.d). the use of electricity (works and

where it is ) is something taken for granted , but using it safely is important. By

understanding how electricity work and where it is found we can prevent electric

danger no matter where we are ( macknnon , 2010). It is also important for us to

know that risk in electrical work is more than any job.(Roberts,2014).

According to electrical safety UK, electrical safety is important

because hazard such as arc flash and shock can result in death if you are exposed

to them. Fortunately, the likelihood of this occurring is relatively low. However

the control measures that prevent these hazards require careful management,

attention to detail and technical competence.

Hazard can be defined as any potential on actual threat to the

wellbeing oof people of people equipment, machinery or environment. Hazard

can also be seen something that can be identify as measure oof potential source

of danger such as naked electric wires, electricity gadget which are not switch of

unsafe acts, unprotected installation, overload socket and many more (Caclick

[Link],2006). Electrical safety hazard are the cause of about a quarter of all deaths

within the domestic and industrial energy users.

This context that the researcher aims to determine the lived experiences

of those students who had been experience of awareness of electrical safety. In

particular, this proposed thesis aims to determine the level of awareness of

electrical safety of SHS students in palo national high school and identify the

factors that caused of harmful signs.

Electrical safety awareness is significant because it plays a crucial role in enhancing the safety of lives and property. Most accidents happen due to carelessness or lack of knowledge about basic rules when using electricity. Awareness helps prevent electric dangers by understanding how electricity works and where it is found. Consequently, it ensures practical certainty that injury will not result from electrical use, which is essential for both safety of individuals and property .

Technical competence is crucial in ensuring electrical safety because it involves the ability to manage and implement control measures that prevent electrical hazards. This competence ensures attention to detail and proper adherence to safety procedures, which are necessary for mitigating risks such as arc flash and shock that, despite their rarity, can have severe consequences .

Safety is defined as the reduction of risk to a level that is as low as reasonable and practicable. It is a state of mind and environment that must integrate into every working procedure. The key elements in ensuring safety involve technical competence, careful management, and attention to detail in applying control measures to prevent hazards like arc flash and shock, which can result in death despite their low likelihood of occurrence .

The document suggests enhancing electrical safety in educational settings through awareness and education, teaching basic safety rules, and practical understanding of electrical functions and hazards. This approach can lead to reduced accidents by equipping students with the knowledge to identify risks and take preventive measures, ultimately fostering a culture of safety that extends beyond educational settings into everyday life .

Understanding how electricity functions and where it is located allows individuals to anticipate and prevent electrical hazards before they occur. Knowledge about the presence and path of electricity is essential to implement preventive measures such as not overloading sockets and ensuring installations are properly covered and maintained, thus reducing the likelihood of accidents .

Potential hazards associated with electrical work include arc flash, shock, naked electric wires, unsafe acts, and unprotected installations which can potentially lead to injury or death. Electrical work is considered riskier than other jobs because the hazards involved require technical competence to manage and involves risks that are significant yet often underestimated, such as exposure to high voltage and current .

A lack of electrical safety awareness often leads to accidents because individuals may not know or adhere to basic safety rules, leading to unsafe practices such as handling naked electric wires or using unsafe installations. Measures to mitigate these risks include enhancing awareness through education, technical training, and establishing safety procedures that include identifying hazards and maintaining safe practices such as proper management of electrical installations .

The lived experiences of Grade 12 TVL-EIM students at Palo National High School can provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of electrical safety awareness by revealing the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application of safety rules. By examining their experiences, educators and policymakers can understand common mistakes and misconceptions, allowing for more targeted educational interventions that emphasize real-world application and practical engagement with safety protocols .

Control measures necessary to prevent electrical hazards include careful management and attention to detail, technical competence, and specific safety procedures. These measures are crucial because, despite the relatively low likelihood of hazards like arc flash and shock occurring, the potential consequences include severe injury or death. Effective control measures ensure that the practical certainty of safety is maintained even when human factors, such as carelessness and lapse in adherence to safety rules, are present .

Factors contributing to harmful electrical incidents include carelessness, lack of knowledge, failure to recognize hazards like naked wires or overloaded sockets, and unsafe installations. Awareness can significantly reduce these factors by educating individuals on the basics of electrical safety and the potential risks, prompting them to act with caution and adhere to safety procedures, thus lowering the incidence of accidents .
