At the end of this session student journalists will have a better understanding of the
Purpose (Rationale): purpose of the editorial in a school newspaper and demonstrate this understanding by
writing a concise and clear argument on a important issue in their community.

By the end of this session participants will be able to:

Participants will brainstorm on the issues that important in the community and write them down on
a piece of notebook.

Application

Introduction to the editorial and sampling

30 Present a brief introduction to the news editorial at a school newspaper. Each group will be given
several articles and asked to identify between editorial or news story, what type of editorial, and the
intended purpose of the editorial.

Development

Select an issue

Students will be presented with a topic and asked to present all of the issues that would be

necessary to examine in an effective editorial. The groups will then look through their initial
brainstorming ideas in the first activity and be asked to select one topic and reach an opinion on the
issue and offer a solution. Each group must present this information in a single sentence.

Writing the editorial
ALACANTARA JOURNALISM CAMP 2011
On manilla sheets of paper each group will write their sentence from the development activity. They
will then have 10-15 minutes for reporting and gathering the facts on the issues. Participants may
leave the their groups and seek out other participants and people outside in the community.
Information the students should obtain on their issues:
 Who is the community that it impacts
 Differing opinions
 Facts and details
 One quote
Agreement/Processing

Presentations & Commentary

10 Tell the participants to share their editorial background with the group one at a time. Ask the
participants to think of the questions concerning each argument. Talk about the subject and have a
review and suggestions.
