LESSON PLAN

Student Teacher: Mr. Williams Grades: Teaching Class Teaching Date: November 6, 2009

Subject: Volleyball Serving

Standard(s):
Standard 1: Students demonstrate competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to
perform a variety of physical activities.
Standard 2: Students demonstrate an understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies
and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities.
Standard 5: Students exhibit responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and
others in physical activity settings.

Performance Objective(s)/Indicator(s)

Psychomotor: TSWBAT hit the ball over the net using proper serving technique 6 out of 10 tries
(7.1.1; 7.1.2; 7.2.1).

Cognitive: TSWBAT describe the proper foot placement and ball strike of a volleyball serve when
asked, with 90% accuracy (7.2.1; 7.2.4)

Affective: TSWBAT show common courtesy by rolling the ball back to the server as opposed to
throwing it, in 8 out of 10 situations (7.5.1; 7.5.3;)

Equipment Needs: 12 Volleyballs, Volleyball Net and Stands, Floor Tape, Tape Measure.

PRACTICE OPPORTUNITIES

Time Instructional Activities (Detailed)

1:10-1:13 Intro (see introduction).

1:13-1:18 1.) Bleacher serves

-Give everyone a volleyball and have them face the bleachers at a distance of about
30 feet.
-Have a line marked off with tape about 8 feet high on the bleachers.
-Have the students practice the 2 serving techniques, aiming above this line. Do
about 5 underhand, 5 overhand, then 10 more of whichever is preferred.

1:18-1:23 2.) Partner Serving

-Have students get into pairs with one volleyball per pair. Have them stand on
opposite sides of the net.
-Have the students take turns serving to one another, focusing on accuracy and
proper technique.

1:23-1:28 3.) Partner Grid Scoring

-Have a 9-section grid marked out on both sides of the court, with each grid labeled
as 1, 3, 5, or 10 points. The more difficult shots should be worth more points.
-Have the one partner stand at each end of the court, and have them take turns
serving with the goal of hitting the highest number of points possible. Keep track of the
number of points you acquire and try to beat your partner.

1:28-1:38 4.) Horse

-Get in groups of 2 or 3 and play the game H-O-R-S-E, using the grids as the
targets.
-The first server must call which section they are aiming for. If they hit the right one,
then the next person tries to serve to the same spot. If they miss, then they have an H.
If they make the correct serve, then the first person tries another shot.
-The goal is to not be the first one in your group to get H-O-R-S-E.

1:38-1:40 Conclusion (see conclusion).

PROCEDURES
Introduction (Set Induction):
Today we will be learning about different volleyball serves and their proper techniques. The two
basic serving techniques are underhand, and overhand. Underhand looks like this (demonstration):
You want to have one leg forward, facing the target area, with knees slightly bent. Hold the ball with
the non-dominant hand, across and in front of your body. Strike the ball with your dominant hand,
using a forward and up motion. Use the heel of your hand to strike the ball. Be sure to follow
through.
The overhand serve looks like this (demonstration): Have your feet in the same position as before,
with knees slightly bent. Toss the ball about 3 feet above your shoulders and make contact with it
while it is above your head. Make sure your hand is in a fist, and flex the wrist as you strike the ball.
You want the serve to be fast, with a flat trajectory, making it more difficult for the opposing team to
return the ball. Are there any questions?

Organizational Plan (How will students and equipment be organized?):

SKILL ANALYSES

Skills to be Taught Teaching Cues

 Overhand Serve 1. Forward stride position, knees bent, facing

target.
2. Toss ball about 3 feet above shoulder.
3. Contact ball with heel of the hand, with hand in
a fist.
4. Flex wrist while making contact above the
head.
5. Follow through.

 Underhand Serve 1. Forward stride position, knees bent, facing

target.
2. Hold ball in non dominant hand, in front of the
body.
3. Strike the ball with the heel of your dominant
hand in an upward and forward motion.
4. Follow through.

Closure:
Can anyone tell me the correct steps in performing the underhand serve? Does anyone think
they can demonstrate it? Who can tell me the steps to correctly performing an overhand serve? Can
anyone demonstrate it for me? Next week we will be learning about the bump pass, so please come
prepared for that.
