Chapter II
Review of Related Literature

College readiness is an operationally as the level of preparation that the student needs in
order to enroll specifically in college and succeed. If a student is unprepared, he can fail an
assignment or class, which leads to stress and hopelessness, which only serves to perpetuate
academic troubles. An individual student might instead start out on the right foot by actively
taking charge of their educational experience.

ACADEMIC

Academic preparation, according to Conley (2007), is the "academic knowledge and skills that
students need to succeed in undertaking college-level work." Students who are college ready
choose the correct vocation before they enroll in college (Jaime, 2017). College preparation is
more than just a student's academic performance and CV or online profile. If the student is more
academically prepared to enter college, he will have a good opportunity to finish a college
degree (ACT Research and Policy, 2013). Several studies identified the variables associated
with academic knowledge and skills. For instance, Palafox, Lorenzo & Palafox (2018) identified
on the employability skills and entrepreneurial skills which the ABM students were assessed
most proficient. In a study conducted by Ridenour (2015), it was emphasized that qualities
needed to enter college is psychological in nature. For this, Felton (2016) argues that ‘while test
scores predict academic success, self-management and relationship skills may better prepare
student to thrive and graduate.

EMOTIONAL

To this, Igoe (2017) highly emphasized emotional preparedness as the skills to develop his full
potential in college and beyond. For example, resilience develops students’ ability to handle
life’s challenges and still find ways to survive. In addition, emotional preparedness
encompasses soft skills, including communication, confidence, humility, empathy and maturity.
Stoltzfus (2015) found in a study that students who feel less emotionally ready for college
compared to other students are likely to have lower grades and other depressing experiences
on their campus. Another concept of emotional preparedness was highlighted by Florence
(2017) as self-efficacy and autonomy which emerged as positive and negative. The majority of
students think that positive character characteristics and conduct transcend academic abilities
and encompass things like self-management, self-discovery, and mindset. In comparison,
Jawad (2017) investigated students' perceptions of their readiness for college and discovered
that academic behavior and cognitive capabilities are two elements that help students acclimate
to college life. College preparation is productive and rewarding if the students have the right
mind set after graduating from high school. It will be helpful to know the necessary skills to
develop the students’ college readiness. College preparedness is not just about the academic
aspect of the student’s overall profile; thus it is only one element of an individual’s well rounded
set of skills. The other elements of a student's skills are emotional preparedness and social
skills. In this study, the self-perception of the chosen Accountancy, Business and Management
(ABM) students was evaluated in terms of their readiness for college on the academic, social,
and emotional fronts. The three components of college ready were investigated for significant
differences based on the demographic information of the students. Self-perception showed a
college-prepared student academically, socially and emotionally. However, there are l
constructs of their academic and social-emotional preparedness that need further
improvements. A senior high school student should be capable of adapting their abilities,
behavior, and knowledge to every work they undertake in order to be considered college
prepared. It is all about the ability to discover success while studying at an institute of higher
learning. The school is looking for ways to help their high school graduates be more prepared
for college and the workforce. College preparation will help pupils who does not yet know what
to do when they leave Senior High School. such as what classes to take, where to enroll, how to
apply to colleges, and the whole college freshman experience. Students may have the most
difficult decision to make in choosing courses and institutions because it will impact the path of
their choice of course in the future career. This study assessed the self-perception of the
selected Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM) students on their academic, social
and their emotional college [Link]-perception showed a college-prepared student
academically, socially and emotionally. For this, high schools should develop collaborative
teaching and learning strategies focus on reading and writing. Indeed, to prepare students for
college alone is insufficient; a college-ready student should complete a degree with a life-ready
perspectives. College education and obtaining a college degree is a genuine desire of every
student because it can be a passport to their future and life success. Most students pursue a
college degree in order to advance their careers. Senior high school students must decide
whether to continue their education in college or enter the workforce. Every student must adjust
to the transition from high school to college.

SOCIAL

College allows students to pursue their interests, gain socio-cultural experiences, and build
more promising careers. Aside from aspirations, academic preparation, and information, social-
emotional competencies and life-management skills are critical for college success. This broad
set of skills, also known as noncognitive skills, soft skills, or 21st century skills, includes those
required to engage with the academic demands of college, cope with life's competing pressures,
and navigate the college environment. Despite a lack of agreement on naming or defining the
specific skills included in the concept of college resilience, frameworks for these skills abound in
both research and practice. There is agreement, however, on the importance of a broad set of
life skills that are not fully captured by the aforementioned categories and are critical for
ensuring resilience and fortitude in college. Students must take a number of information-based
decisions and actions during the college application and selection process in order to be eligible
for a four-year institution. Complete degree completion depends on college preparation. A
student's likelihood of completing a college degree increases if they are academically well-
prepared for college.
In this, the social-emotional development comes into picture. According to Collaborative for
Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) in the United States, it is “the process
through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes and
skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and
show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships and make responsible
decisions.” Additionally, Johnson & Wiener (2017), refer this broad term to ‘the many ways that
educators and researchers define the work to support students to develop as individuals and in
relationship to others.’ Studies on social-emotional preparedness of students identified several
concerns. In the study of Pittman (2017), it was confirmed that social and moral development of
the students will equitably and diversely lead to a healthier environment. A similar study
conducted by Venkatesan (2020) in the USA found that the social-emotional constructs of self-
management, growth mindset, self-efficacy, and social-awareness positively predicted GPA and
completion. However, it is discovered that students in higher education have a limited capacity
to adapt to the social expectations of culture. Sulaiman et al. (2016) underlined collaboration as
a crucial soft skill while discussing societal needs. The study indicated that cooperation added-
values on pupils, boost their self-confidence and aid strengthen their skills in communication
and relationship with others. In terms of social-emotional preparedness, Venkatesan (2020)
found that socio-economic status was significantly correlated with and also emerged as a risk
factor in GPA and completion while the social emotional constructs of a female student
positively predicted higher GPA and greater chances of completion.
