Science 9 Geothermal Energy Lesson Plan

The document provides a lesson plan for a 9th grade science class on geothermal energy and geothermal power plants. The lesson plan aims to teach students how geothermal energy from volcanoes can be used to generate electricity. Students will learn about geothermal energy and power plants through various classroom activities including defining key terms, identifying true/false statements, sequencing the process of converting geothermal heat to electricity, discussing a diagram of a geothermal plant, and creating a collage on geothermal plants in the Philippines. The lesson seeks to help students understand how energy from volcanoes can be tapped for human use and the importance of geothermal power.

LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE – 9

Performance Standard:

Content Standard:

 The learner demonstrates understanding of volcanoes found in the Philippines

Learning Competency:

 Illustrate how energy from volcanoes may be tapped for human use
Code:
 S9ES-IIIc-d-29

I- Objectives :
1. Define Geothermal Energy.
2. Explain how geothermal energy from volcanoes can generate electricity.
3. Appreciate the importance of Geothermal Energy by creating and design a collage on
Geothermal Power plants in the Philippines.

II- Content/Topic:

 Geothermal Energy/Geothermal Power Plant

III- Learning Resources

 Materials:
Laptop, TV, bond papers, chalk and Manila paper

 Reference:
Learning Activity Sheet, Negros SLM, downloaded PowerPoint presentations
IV- Procedure

A. Reviewing Previous Lesson

 Individual Activity.
 The Students will share individually what have they learned from the Previous which is all about
Volcano Eruption.

B. Establishing the purpose for the lesson

 Presentation of Objectives.

C. Presenting examples /Instances of the new lesson

 The students will answer the Thumbs Up and Down Activity.
 Direction: Read the statements below and mark it 👍 (thumbs up) if the statement is true or correct and
👎 (thumbs down) if the statement is false or incorrect. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper
____1. High temperature inside the Earth turns different materials in the mantle to partially melt and can
be used as source of energy.
____2. Energy that comes from the heat inside the Earth is called geothermal energy.
____3. Geothermal energy converts heat to electricity using conventional and supercritical system.
____4. Conventional Geothermal energy uses steam/heat produced from molten materials and water
from the underground.
____5. Supercritical system utilizes steam from geysers and hot-pressure depths of the Earth.
D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skill
 Arrange the step by step process of converting geothermal energy to electrical energy by placing a
number in the blank space provided before the item
____A. The steam cools off in a cooling tower and condenses back to water.
____B. When the water reaches the surface, the pressure is dropped, which causes the water to turn into
steam.
____C. The cooled water is pumped back into the Earth to begin the process again.
_____D. Hot water is pumped from deep underground through a well high pressure.
_____E. The steam spins the turbine, which is connected to the generator that produces electricity.

E. Continuation of the discussion of new concepts

 Class discussion on Geothermal Power Plant
 Learners will going explain how geothermal energy flows in a geothermal power plant using the
diagram below.
Developing mastery

 The learners shall be able to locate the Geothermal Power Plants in the Philippines.

V- Application

F. Finding practical applications of concepts and skills in daily living

 Individual activity
The learners will going to answer the question:
 What is the importance of Geothermal Power Plants?
 What are the advantages and disadvantages of Geothermal Power Plants?

VI- Remediation
G. Additional activities for application
 The learners shall be able to create and design a collage on Geothermal Power Plants in the Philippines.
VII- Generalization
H. Making generalizations and abstractions about the lesson
 Class interactive discussion
