The Role of Community Garden in Urban Neighborhoods of North Caloocan City:

Basis for Sustainable Healthy Community

Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter presents the problem and its setting. It includes the background of the study, the statement
of the problem, significance and objectives of the study, scope and limitations, and the assumptions.

Introduction

A community garden is a place where neighbors come together to grow food, build relationships, and
take care of the environment. Community gardens are a great way to preserve space in urban areas, as well as
provide opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds. They also provide therapeutic experiences for
those who may be dealing with mental or physical health issues. Community gardens are a great way to connect
with nature. People who are living in urban areas may not have access to large amounts of green space. Gar-
dens give people a chance to participate in a growing environment and can also provide opportunities for them to
learn new things.

Sustainable gardening is a way to take control of the environment, by creating healthy communities in
urban neighborhoods. The garden serves as a place for people to connect and learn about the environment,
while also being able to take care of themselves and their families. In addition, community garden provides an
opportunity for people to learn about gardening, but also allows them to connect with one another through
socializing and sharing ideas about how best to help our planet. It's also great for children, they can play games
or just hang out with their friends while they're learning about all things gardening. When people think of a
community garden, they often think of a place where people can grow their own food and take part in hands-on
activities. But that's not all, community gardens also have a practical purpose as they are designed to make us
healthier, happier, and more environmentally friendly.

In an urban setting, a community garden can be a vital link to the outside world. It provides healthy
produce to the people who live there and gives them a chance to connect with one another through gardening.
As such, it can be an important part of a community's social and economic life. It can also be a place where
residents of an urban community can connect with one another and realize their dreams. These are just some of
the benefits that people find in a community garden. A community garden can enrich the lives of residents and
provide them with things they need. It can also be an educational tool that teaches children how to take care of
plants, do chores, and is a great place for socializing with their friends and meet new people. In addition,
community gardens are sources of relaxation open to everyone. Hence, a community garden is a place for
everyone to escape from the stress of everyday life and enjoy themselves.

Basis for Sustainable Healthy Community

Background of the Study

Community gardens have been a part of urban life for centuries. They serve as a space for people to
come together, share their time and labor, and take care of one another. There is a high need for community gar-
dens in urban neighborhoods because the plants that grow in them are not like any other plants. They make the
spaces around them more vibrant and connect the communities. The benefits of gardening also extend to physi-
cal health, psychological well-being, and local food security. And these are just a few of the ways urban commu-
nity gardens have changed communities and have become essential to the well-being of their residents.

In today's world, there are various different ways to create community gardens that are sustainable and
encourage healthy interactions between neighbors. There are also many benefits to having a garden for the
neighborhood. Such as gardens help to protect the environment by reducing pollution and waste, they offer op-
portunities for therapeutic experiences such as gardening therapy, they provide an opportunity for hands-on
learning through activities like planting seeds or building raised beds, and they can help people feel connected to
each other in their neighborhood. According to Wolch, J. R, et al. (2014), there are three main components to a
sustainable community garden. The first is that it needs to be educational, which means that people must have
information on how to grow their own food and on how to feed their families healthy foods. Next, there needs to
be collaboration within the neighborhood in order for the garden to stay sustainable. Lastly, there must be youth
engagement because they will take into consideration the future of the garden once they grow up and pass it on.
The people living in the area is a vital part of the community garden since everyone in the area has a role to play.
For example, there will be at least one person who does the planting of the garden and another that does the
weeding, another person who makes sure that all the equipment needed for the garden is working properly and
lastly, a gardener or group of people that take care of everything so that people don't have to. Gardening also
helps people to get out of their houses and interact with each other which is great for everyone.

In addition, the therapeutic experience in a community garden is many and there is something for every-
one to get involved with. For example, some people will choose to work on the garden because it gives them a
place to feel close to nature and aids their mental health. At the same time, others may feel like they need a
break from being indoors so they do some gardening and become more physically active. The therapeutic expe-
riences of a community garden do not just benefit adults but can also help children. Exposure to nature through
activities like gardening and gardening therapy helps to grow a child's senses and show them that there are
many more benefits to the outdoors than being inside all day. The benefits of gardening go beyond the physical
aspect, it can also be a great opportunity for everyone to get to know each other and grow as individuals.

This research will describe both the role of community gardens in urban neighborhoods as well as the
challenges and opportunities. More specifically, it will address the purpose and impact of community gardens and
the roles they have in urban neighborhoods in accordance with sustainability.
