MYP 5 Physics

Criteria D – Simple Machines

Name: _____________________ Date:_________________ Class #:_______

1. Background Information:

A simple machine is a mechanical device that changes the direction or magnitude of a force.
There are six kinds of classical simple machines:

• Lever
• Wheel and axle
• Pulley
• Inclines plane
• Wedge
• Screw

We use most of these six simple machines every day. Often without giving them a second
thought.

2. Task:

STEP 1 – Assessing ATL Skills and Choosing a simple machine

1. Use Table 1 to self-assess your mastery of the two approaches to learning (ATL) skills mentioned.

2. Choose one out of the six simple machines and a specific problem it solves.

STEP 2 – Creating the Product

Choosing a Product

For this assignment you may choose your type of product from the five options listed below:

1. Cartoon Strip/Storyboard: Drama not your thing? More of an artist or an author? Then this
product is for you! Create a cartoon strip or a storyboard. Illustrate your knowledge on paper or
digitally, the choice is yours. Set your story in space, in the distant past, or underwater.

2. News report/Video Documentary: If you’re a fan of Planet Earth, An Inconvenient Truth, or
Before the Flood then you are in luck. This is your chance to get the truth about your problem
out there. Feel free to interview your classmates, your teachers, your parents, and random
people from Mega Bangna to get their perspectives and change their mind on an issue that is
important to you. Go out there and make a convincing news report or documentary about your
simple machines.

3. Infographic: An oldie but goodie. Use [Link] or other websites to create a beautiful
infographic that is understandable by the reader. However, be careful not to leave out important
text or discussion. Use visuals to clarify, not to simplify.

4. Structure or model: Are you up for a more hands – on challenge? Create a small model of your
simple machine using whatever material you can find. Label the parts of the machine and make
sure to include the relevant information and the discussion. This can be done in a separate word
document or you can attach it to your structure.

5. Write a Scientific Essay: Why are you even reading this option?!? Be a risk-taker and try
something new! However, if you insist, you may write a scientific essay. Remember that these
essays have a very rigid structure.

Requirements

Your product will need to include the following things:

a. An explanation of your simple machine in general
i. Name and brief historical summary.
ii. How it works and the physics behind it.
b. An explanation of how your simple machine solves a particular problem
i. An explanation of the problem.
ii. A explanation of how your simple machine solves that specific problem. Include a
numerical example with real/realistic numbers
c. An evaluation of your simple machine
i. The advantages and limitations of your simple machine including a comparison to
alternative solutions if relevant.
ii. The advantages and limitations of your simple machine considering a chosen
factor
iii. Reach a conclusion, summarizing your simple machine and how it solves that
problem.

Regardless of the option that you choose, your text will be sent through TurnItIn. If you choose
Product #1 or #5 you will be asked to copy and paste the text from your cartoon
strip/storyboard/model into a Word document. You do not need to format this document and it does
not need to “look good”. It will be used only to ensure that you have not plagiarized any material from
other sources.

If you choose Product #2 you may use a speech-to-text app such as Voice Texting to convert the
dialogue in your dramatic performance or video documentary into text. Then just paste this text into a
Word document for submission.

STEP 3 – Submitting your Product

1. Your final draft is due on __________________________________________________________.

2. Please use the following checklist when submitting your assignment to ManageBac:

o The text version of my product is a WORD OR PDF file. Pages files are not acceptable!

o The title of my file is “[Link]” or “[Link]”.

o My Cited References is not a separate file. It is included at the end of my scientific essay.

o I am aware that my report will be submitted to [Link] to be tested for plagiarism.

An inclined plane reduces the required effort by allowing a gradual ascent, offering a greater mechanical advantage for lifting loads over a distance, which can improve efficiency by mitigating wear on the machinery or reducing the power needed . A screw functions as a compressed inclined plane and typically offers high mechanical advantage in terms of force transmission but may operationally be less efficient due to frictional losses inherent in its design . The specific context of their use determines each machine's effectiveness and efficiency .

The use of simple machines can have various implications. Environmentally, these machines often require minimal energy input, which could reduce ecological footprints if they replace more energy-intensive technologies . Ethically, their simplicity and accessibility can democratize technology, providing a means for developing regions to solve local issues without complex machinery. However, considerations must be given to the sustainability of materials and the impact on local ecosystems . These implications should be weighed when designing and deploying simple machine solutions .

Visual models and diagrams serve as critical tools for illustrating the components and operation of simple machines, making complex physics concepts more accessible . They help in demonstrating how forces are manipulated, distributed, and used to perform work, thereby facilitating enhanced comprehension of the principles involved . Such visuals also aid in showcasing real-world applications and mechanical advantages, enhancing both teaching and the practical understanding of these devices .

Digital tools enable precise measurements and simulations that can evaluate how different simple machines perform under varying conditions, thus enhancing the decision-making process . Information literacy involves evaluating and selecting credible sources and tools, which aids in finding the most suitable simple machine solution for a given problem, taking into account various operational and environmental factors . Combining these skills allows for a more thorough and informed analysis of potential solutions .

Levers offer significant mechanical advantage by amplifying applied force, making it easier to move heavy loads with less effort . However, their effectiveness is dependent on the length of the lever arm and the position of the fulcrum. An improperly placed fulcrum may negate the mechanical benefits. Understanding these advantages and limitations is crucial for selecting appropriate solutions in practical applications .

Simple machines such as levers, pulleys, and inclined planes provide practical illustrations of fundamental physics principles by altering the direction or magnitude of forces to solve real-world issues . For example, a pulley system reduces the effort required to lift heavy objects by distributing the force over a longer distance, thus demonstrating mechanical advantage . Evaluating evidence and arguments related to simple machines involves understanding the physics behind them, such as force, work, and mechanical advantage, which are crucial in applying these machines effectively to specific problems .

Creating a physical model of a simple machine helps in visually and tangibly demonstrating its structure and mechanics, facilitating a deeper understanding of the underlying principles such as force, motion, and equilibrium . Such models allow for a clear illustration of how the machine's components interact, which aids in explaining its operation and advantages in a comprehensive manner . Effective use of scientific language and visuals in these models can also improve communication and education on the topic .

To assess mastery, one can use self-assessment rubrics that focus on evaluating the ability to choose appropriate sources and critically analyze evidence relevant to simple machines . Practical exercises, such as evaluating the effectiveness of different machines or creating models, also aid in identifying strengths and areas needing improvement . These strategies enable a deeper understanding of both the knowledge application and decision-making processes involved in using simple machines .

Utilizing precise scientific language ensures that the concepts related to simple machines, such as mechanical advantage and force equilibrium, are communicated effectively and accurately . It helps in conveying complex ideas in a clear manner, reducing misunderstandings and allowing for a consistent understanding among diverse audiences . This precision is essential for educational purposes and in technical discussions about the machines' applications .

Developing diverse multimedia products like documentaries and storyboards engages different learning styles, supporting a holistic learning experience . These products allow students to explore simple machines in context, integrating theory with practical applications through visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning modalities . By presenting content through dynamic and relatable narratives, multimedia tools enhance engagement and retention of information related to the physics and mechanics of simple machines .
