Self-Locking Brake Design Solutions

This document contains two sample problems from a textbook on machine design involving braking systems. Problem 1 involves calculating the forces required to apply a single block brake on a drum rotating clockwise and counter-clockwise. Problem 2 involves calculating the operating force needed for a band brake on a drum rotating counter-clockwise given the braking torque and dimensions of the brake system. Both problems provide the relevant equations and step-by-step working to arrive at the solutions for the required forces.

TOPIC 3.2 SAMPLE PROBLEMS

brake sustains 225 N-m torque at 500 rpm; find: (a) the required force (P) to apply the brake for
clockwise rotation of the drum; (b) the required force (P) to apply the brake for counter clockwise
rotation of the drum and (c) the location of the fulcrum to make the brake self-locking. The
coefficient of friction is 0.3.

Problem 2: A band brake acts on the 3/4 th of circumference of a drum of 450 mm diameter which
is keyed to the shaft. The band brake provides a braking torque of 225 N-m. One end of the band is
attached to a fulcrum pin of the lever and the other end to a pin 100 mm from the fulcrum. If the
operating force applied at 500 mm from the fulcrum and the coefficient of friction is 0.25, find the
