TITLE Impact of Technology to the academic performance of grade 11 student In CITI GLOBAL COLLEGE

Chapter 1

Introduction

In our generation today, there’s no denying that technology such as phones, laptop and
computers has become a significant part of many people especially in student’s everyday lives. But many
of us are still wondering on how these technologies affects the student’s learning and what are good
and bad effects of it. Modern technology has greatly improved people’s lives through different fields
such as medicines, work, industry and especially education. For the students, we know the benefits of
using technology such as making student more interested and excited about the lesson. It also increased
the student’s level of interaction and it brought us new perspectives and knowledge in class. Also, the
teaching strategies based on educational technology can be described as ethical practices that facilitate
student’s learning and boost their capacity, productivity, and performance. Instructors are no longer
limited to write in a plain or manila paper or discuss the lesson in a white board, but they can rely on our
modern technologies that will enable them to make things easier. In conclusion, technology is a versatile
and valuable tool for teaching and learning and becoming a way of life. Technology in the classroom is
both beneficial to students and teachers. It creates new ways of obtaining and presenting information
and gives us new ways of analyzing and understanding the world around us. These inspired the
researcher to conduct a study about technology. We focused on how the technology impact to the
academic performance in this way of new normal.

Statement of the Problem

With the advent of technology, learning has also become digitally instant. With mobile,
laptops, educational televisions and other gadgets for learning, the academic purpose in Filipino
students of Grade 11 of CITI GLOBAL COLLEGES are presupposed to be facilitated or hampered by such
digital technology.

Thus, this proposed study aims to determine the impact of technology to the academic
performance of grade 11 student in CITI GLOBAL COLLEGES. In this regard, this study will also examine
the profile of respondents in terms of age and sex. In order to answer the major research problem, the
following research questions will be investigated:

1. Is there a significant relationship between the profile of respondents in terms of sex and age and
technology?

2. Is there a significant relationship between the technology and academic performance?

3. Is there a significant relationship between the profile of respondents and academic performance?

Hypothesis

New technologies such as online search engines allow students to learn better faster and more in
depth.

Digital technologies enhance communication and feedback between students, teachers and parents to
smooth the process back to school the field of teaching and education has greatly benefited from
technologies learning and teaching have become so much easier and enhanced because of the ease that
technology has offered.

With increasing advances in technology, the more students use it the more they will be better equally to
handle the technalities that they will face in their practical lives after their studies while technology has
become increasingly more popular in classrooms there is a concern that students are relying too heavily
on technology.

Technology also has the disadvantage of being highly addictive this makes students want to stay isolated
and work on their own instead of group studying and brainstorming together.

The expansion of technology and the internet has increased our susceptibility to their addictive nature.
It's crucial to maintain control over our usage and educate ourselves on further measures we can take to
safeguard our kids and ourselves from technology and internet addiction. Technology addiction can be
characterized as a type of impulse control disorder in which a person becomes addicted to the negative
consequences of technology as a result of excessive usage of computers, the internet, electronic games,
and smart devices. It serves as a catch-all phrase for addiction to video games, computers, and the
internet.

Although they are transient, using tech tools and services has many advantageous consequences. It will
have an adverse impact on people over time. Young people who work in digital operations develop
strong technology capabilities but lack real-world practical abilities. The young people are removed from
reality, allowing them to live in their ideal world. Due to the amount of time spent on computers, young
people stop participating in some outdoor activities with friends and family.

Addiction to technical services has a negative impact on young people. If the drawbacks or harmful
outcomes of using digital platforms had been known for years to come, it would have been considerably
safer. Young people want to do it quicker, faster, and cheaper because of these repercussions. The
young mass avoids face-to-face contact, which is bad for society since everyone wants to do everything
on their own schedule and pace, which makes them anxious.

As a result of academic, athletic, and social success, teens may stay up late playing with technology,
which can cause sleep disorders. This can prevent weight gain and other negative effects of a sedentary
lifestyle and poor diet, like cardiovascular disease. Social skills in real life can deteriorate. A person
hooked to technology loses the ability to distinguish between the real world and the parallel universes
that provide rapid gratification, enjoyment, and reward. As a result, teens who use technology
excessively may experience disruptions to their regular mood and socializing routines.

As a youth, a student, a child and as a friend. Let's be a good role model to everyone. Let's help each
other in combating this addiction, in order to have a better future generation. We must need to grow,
we must need to learn and do good. If we want a change in our world, we must start it ourselves.

Theoretical Framework

In another study, Klopfer (2009) discussed how students are growing and are completely
normalized by digital technologies. The study explained that “many students in this group are using new
media and technologies to create new things in new ways, learn new things in new ways and
communicate in new ways with new people-behaviors that have become hardwired in their ways of
thinking and operating in the world”. While there is much resistance to incorporating technology, “there
are countless examples of these technologies demonstrating their educational value to other industries,
confirming the powerful learning opportunities and advantages they afford”.

While determining the effects technology has in our classrooms Klopfer strongly believe that the
incorporation of technology makes the classroom stronger. They argue that undoubtedly without theses
recent technologies in the classroom, strong lessons can still be achieved but there’s a sharp disconnect
between the way students are taught in school and the way outside world approaches socialization,
meaning making and accomplishment.

Shivakumar and Manichander (2013) discuss education within the 21^st century and how that
technology is a powerful tool for students. They emphasized collaborating with one another and
incorporation of blended learning, as well as information and communications technologies (ICT). “ICT
refers to technologies that provide access to information through telecommunications”. In using ICT in
education, teachers are able to familiarize themselves with technology and some of the issues that arise.
This paper goes on to discuss different forms of ICT and how they benefit the classrooms.

Significance of the Study

STUDENT

One of the most significant benefits of using technology in education is putting students’
knowledge and skills into action. Students earn beneficial knowledge through online classes and
interactions with their teachers and other peer students. However, it is very important to put these new
skills into practice and action.

TEACHER

The incorporation of technology into the classroom helps teachers to easily assign various tasks
and assignments that allow students to put their knowledge and experience into action and develop the
ability to apply their knowledge to create a solution to a situation, problem, or event.

Future Researchers.

As for future researchers, what you will learn here is a very important technological impact on
education is increased interactivity and class engagement. In addition, better overall comprehension,
practical learning, time management, and combined learning methodologies are just some of the
impacts that technology has had on student learning.

The integration of technology transforms educators from traditional knowledge transmitters to facilitators of interactive and student-centered learning environments. Teachers leverage technology to assign tasks that engage students actively and enable them to apply theoretical knowledge practically. They guide students in navigating digital tools, encouraging collaboration and critical thinking, thereby preparing them for technology-rich environments beyond academia .

Technology in education prepares students for real-world challenges by enhancing their capability to handle technological tools and face related practical issues post-graduation. It develops students' technical skills and adaptability, crucial for a technology-driven society. However, without balancing it with practical experience, students may lack real-world abilities, as excessive reliance on technology can hinder the development of interpersonal and critical-thinking skills needed outside academic environments .

To mitigate the addictive nature of technology among students, the document suggests fostering awareness and self-control in technology usage. Educators and guardians should educate students and themselves on the risks of technology overuse. Encouraging balanced activities, promoting face-to-face social interactions, and setting limits on screen time are also key strategies. Moreover, embracing technology in moderation and leveraging it for educational purposes rather than leisure alone can help maintain a healthy balance .

Technology in education acts as a double-edged sword. On one hand, it facilitates improved engagement, interactions, and practical learning opportunities, making lessons more dynamic and tailored to the modern digital landscape. On the other hand, it poses risks such as technology addiction, which can lead students to become isolated, their social skills to diminish, and their physical health to decline due to sedentary behaviors .

Technology poses several conceptual challenges in education, including the potential disparity between the educational and real-world application of skills, the risk of digital addiction, and the possible decline in social and collaborative skills among students. Balancing technology's educational benefits with its drawbacks, such as reducing students' face-to-face interactions and contributing to superficial engagement rather than deep comprehension, represents a significant challenge for educators .

The incorporation of technology in classrooms at CITI GLOBAL COLLEGE has significantly increased interactivity and class engagement among students. This technological integration has also enhanced overall comprehension, allowing students to better understand the material and apply their knowledge practically. The use of digital tools and ICT facilitates better engagement through interactive learning methodologies, aligning with modern students' ingrained digital behavior .

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) plays a vital role in modern education by providing access to information through telecommunications, thereby enhancing how students learn and teachers teach. ICT enables blended and practical learning, fostering collaboration and integration of technology into traditional teaching methods. It facilitates not only the acquisition of knowledge but also its practical application, preparing students for digital engagements in their future professional lives .

Resistance to incorporating technology in education may stem from a fear of dependence on digital tools, skepticism about their long-term efficacy, and concerns over technology's potential to distract rather than educate. Additionally, there may be apprehensions regarding the erosion of traditional teaching methods and the skills gap that might develop if students become overly reliant on technology for learning, rather than engaging in critical thinking and problem-solving .

The hypothesis posited suggests that digital technologies such as online search engines enhance learning by allowing students to learn faster, better, and more in-depth. It anticipates that technology will smoothen communication and feedback processes between students, teachers, and parents, thereby potentially boosting academic performance. The study further hypothesizes a significant relationship between technology usage and academic success, as well as between students' demographic profiles (age and sex) and their academic performance .

Excessive reliance on technology can negatively impact students' real-life social skills by encouraging isolation and reducing face-to-face interactions. This technological addiction can cause disruptions in students' regular mood and socializing routines, leading to a deterioration of social skills in the real world. Students become more inclined to pursue activities at their own pace, often in solitude, which contributes to anxiety and a preference for virtual interactions over in-person communications .
