Self-Perception Of ABM Students Towards Their Academic, Social

And Emotional College Preparedness

This study assessed the self-perception of the selected Accountancy,

Business and Management (ABM) students on their academic, social and
their emotional college preparedness. The students’ demographic profile
was also tested for significant difference in the three constructs of the
college preparedness. Through a self-made questionnaire in a 4- scale
Likert style, data were gathered from the 255 randomly selected ABM
students of one private higher education institution in Batangas Province
in the Philippines. Self-perception showed a college-prepared student
academically, socially and emotionally. However, there are various
constructs of their academic and social-emotional preparedness that need
further improvements. The statistical test of significance indicated that
the various constructs of academic, social and emotional preparedness
have no difference by age, type of school, family income and order of
birth. A significant difference was shown in the respondents’ sex and
social preparedness but not on academic and emotional preparedness.
Similarly, there was significant difference in the various constructs of
academic, social and emotional preparedness in terms of the students’
GWA in high school. For this, high schools should develop collaborative
teaching and learning strategies focus on reading and writing. In addition,
colleges and universities may provide pertinent course information
through their websites to guide the students on the various details of their
chosen undergraduate courses. Indeed, to prepare students for college
alone is insufficient; a college-ready student should complete a degree
with a life-ready perspectives.
 A Close Look At The Needs And Challenges Faced by Senior High
School Students Of the ABM Strand

This qualitative study aimed to better understand the needs and

challenges faced by Senior High School(SHS) Accountancy, Business,
and Management(ABM) students in their journey of learning real life
business problems. It utilized a case study method in which the unit of
analysis is the SHS Grade 11 and 12 ABM students of Simala National
High School, a secondary public school in Cebu, Philippines. Analysis of
transcribed interviews and observations from 20 key informants revealed
the findings encapsulated in the following themes: a) ?Clamor for Work
Immersion? which explains the need to expose the learners to hands on
real world business activities; b) ?Demand for Learning Resources and
Facilities? which entails the need for adequate print and non-print
learner?s material, computers, and unlimited internet access; c) ?Request
for Skilled and Experienced Teachers? which relates the need to hire
teachers who are business graduates or have firsthand business
experience; d) ?Time runs fast? which reveals the challenge of allocating
enough time in all their projects particularly those involving data
gathering outside school; and e) ?Funds empty fast? which shows the
challenge of budgeting their allowances to be sufficient for their school
requirement expenses. The school administration and teachers shall then
address the needs through enhancing the work immersion plan,
intensifying the school improvement plan, and hiring of qualified
teachers. To cope with the challenges, the students need to develop time
management skills and properly set priorities on where to allocate their
available finances.
Influencing Factors Of Choosing ABM Strand As To Academic
Performance Of Students In Fundamentals Of Accounting, Business
And Management 1

Choosing one's track or strand in the Senior High School is a tough

decision for incoming Grade 11 students. This study determined the
factors that highly influenced the Grade 11 ABM students to choose
ABM as their academic strand. The identified factors were investigated as
to which of those affects the academic performance of the respondents in
Fundamentals of Accounting, Business, and Management 1 subject. Two
hundred and thirty (230) respondents out of three hundred and eighty four
(384) Grade 11 ABM students of Muntinlupa National High School Main
for the S.Y. 2019-2020 were chosen using simple random sampling
technique. A simple researcher-made survey questionnaire and an official
record of the students' grade were utilized in gathering data. After the
collection of data, SPSS computation revealed that majority of the
respondents enrolled ABM strand by personal choice (146 or 64%). The
academic performance of the respondents in Fundamentals of
Accounting, Business, and Management 1 subject were "Very
Satisfactory" (Overall Mean=86.230, sd=5.204). Also, statistically no
significant difference (F=4.16, sig=.742) in the academic performance of
the respondents were found depending on the factors that influence them
in choosing ABM as their academic strand. Therefore, the null hypothesis
stated was accepted. Results revealed further suggest that all incoming
Grade 11 choose a track/strand in SHS base on personal choice; that
guidance counselors continuously provide career orientation for them;
and that enrolment committee of all Senior High Schools in the
Philippines critically evaluate their enrollees as to their choice of
track/strand.
