Pipe Stress Analysis Tool Overview

This document summarizes a calculation tool for analyzing local pipe stresses at supports. The tool uses equations from a published piping engineering book to calculate circumferential bending stress, local membrane stress, and hoop stress given pipe dimensions, material properties, support geometry, and loads. Input data like pipe diameter, thickness, pressure, and support load are used with the equations to output stress values, which are then checked against allowable stress limits from design codes to determine if the pipe design passes or fails.

This calculation tool was developed using equations and methods contained in Chapter 6 of “Pipe Stress
Engineering” published by Liang-Chun Peng, etc. It is useful to verify pipe allowable is appropriate for the design
code under at locations with excessive external force, such as gas blow down vents.
