1. Project description
2. Calculation Method..
To perform the analysis of the selected fence, the use of computer software is
necessary. As it is an element that is subjected to efforts and deformations, the
program uses the finite element method for its analysis. ANSYS will be the software
used, used to solve problems with dynamic and static structures, it is divided into four
main processes called modules:
• Creation of geometry.
• Creation of the mesh (PRE-PROCESS).
• Calculation (PROCESS).
• Results (POST-PROCESS).
3. Norms considered
American Society for Testing and Materials
ASTM M30 Crash Rated
ASTM M40Crash Rated
4. CALCULATION PROCESS
• Creation of geometry.
• Creation of the mesh (PRE-PROCESS).
• Calculation (PROCESS).
• Results (POST-PROCESS).
*Geometry 2400HP
*Geometry 2700HP
*Geometry 3000HP
*PROCESS
Once the meshing of the elements has been obtained, the initial conditions for the
calculation must be entered, such as:
• Impact speed.
The velocity of the body must be entered in the form of components in “x, y or z,
as appropriate. an impact will be simulated for speeds of 28 miles/hour and 46.9
miles/hour
ASTM International Designation F 2656-07 Certification Standard
It will proceed simulating, in stages, from the lowest speed (28 mph) until finding a
failure in the penetration limits of the barrier.
• Impact time.
To perform the analysis, an impact time of 0.2 seconds has been taken.
• Movement restrictions.
For the analysis, the fixed parts of the element are determined, in the case of the fence
the posts are embedded in the ground, the lower face of the same is considered as
fixed
5.4 Analysis of Results
Item: HP3000
Speed: 37.9mph
the thinnest vertical elements suffer deformations that reach the limits of rupture
while the thickest elements (posts) maintain their deformation within the elastic limit.
the horizontal elements undergo plastic deformations and reach the breaking point in
their central area
conclusions:
a new design is proposed keeping the side posts and increase the cross section of
the fine verticals and also double the number of horizontal elements from 2 to 4
pieces (see example), although it should only be applied if an increase in their cross
section is not enough. making the changes without altering the initial aesthetic
should be a main [Link] is recommended to simulate again, adding one by one,
the necessary geometric changes and combining them in case they are not enough.
