Sustainable Mobility Lecture Notes

The document provides notes from two lectures on sustainable mobility and climate change: 1) The first lecture covers learning outcomes on life cycle assessment methodologies and tools for sustainability. It discusses sustainability deficits in mobility systems and examples of closed loop, sustainable systems like natural water cycles. 2) The second lecture notes that while transport is a major contributor to emissions, electricity and heat production dominate overall. Technological progress in transport led to more comfort rather than emissions reductions. Regulation also failed to effectively curb actual transport emissions. Street transport currently dominates but aviation emissions may grow significantly.

Lecture 1 Notes

- Learning Outcomes: Master Life Cycle Assessment methodologies, know what it is and
how to apply it
o Have some ideas about possible sustainable mobility systems
- In the lecture we look at Sustainable Mobile and look at
o Sustainability Deficits
o Tools for sustainability
o Mobility Systems
- Sustainable systems are a closed loop system where things get recycled and reused. Ex.
Like the natural Rainforest Water Cycle.
- How do we make sustainable systems in cities?
-
Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change Climate change is the greatest market
failure. Benefits of strong, early action on Climate Change outweigh the economic costs of not
acting. The estimates of damage caused by climate change could rise to 20% of GDP.

Lecture 2

The transport sector is a major contributor to greenhouse emissions, but not the biggest one? •
Electricity and heat production dominate the emission balance. • Transport did not decline in
the past decade in spite of major technological progress. Progress was converted to more
comfort. • Regulation did not regulate the actual emissions. • Street transport dominates these
days but aviation has the potential to become similar important.
