Social media started when people start to communicate.

Social means human society, as interference of people, groups and word

media are the medium of expressions. Most of the forms of social media are

not digital, it generates a large number of innovations and is one of the

biggest inventions of technology which is now most popular and widely

used. Social media has equal positive or negative aspects, but many

students are using these sites on a regular basis. Social networking has

become a common international trend which has spread across almost

every corner of the world.

This undertaking aims to determine the effects of using social media on the

study habits of grade 11 students of Purisima Diocesan School Inc. for the

School Year 2022- 2023.

This study will make them realize of what social media bring towards

their academics. The findings revealed that the time spent on social media

can negatively affect students’ academic activities. Therefore, it is our

suggestion that for students to be more productive, they need to minimize

the time they spend engaging in social media activities.

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

Social refers to human society, as the mediums of expression include

people, groups, and the written word. Despite the fact that the majority of social

media platforms are not digital, it generates a large number of innovations and is

presently one of the most popular and widely used technical developments.

Numerous students use these sites every day, despite the fact that social media

have both positive and negative aspects. Social networking has become a

worldwide phenomenon that has spread to almost every region on earth.

Social media is a web-based mobile application that allows people or

organizations to produce, interact with, and share new user-generated or current

material in a digital space. Students are consumers, whereas the media are

producers. Modern secondary school students' use of social media such as

Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and Whatsapp is causing widespread academic

failure among children (David, 2014). Students spend more time speaking with

their classmates than doing research or reading their textbooks. The use of

social media by students expedites their access to essential information,

according to Davis et al (Social Media by Students, 2017). According to Das, B.,

and Sahoo, J.S. (2010). As a consequence of using social media sites,

individuals spend more time communicating with their friends. People develop an

addiction to examining

their own status on social networking sites after a few minutes every day.

Consequently, when we adapt to our increasingly technological culture, our

social connections are affected in several ways. The way in which Internet users

interact and communicate has changed and continues to change. These users

now engage in social engagement through the Internet, which diminishes

conventional human interaction. Social networking websites have altered our

face-to-face contacts, the way we acquire information, and the dynamics of our

social groups and friendships, so influencing our social interaction (Asur and

Huberman, 2016).

Our research intends to examine the connection between social media

and the academic achievements of students. Numerous studies have been

conducted over the years on the impact of social media on the academic

performance of students, and the results demonstrate a strong correlation

between the two variables. As a result of technological advancements, social

networking sites have become increasingly popular among students. And it has

become a serious issue how students' usage of social networking sites impacts

their academic achievement.

Theoretical Framework

Due to the development of media, the world has transitioned

significantly from the physical to the online realm. More emphasis was

placed on creating online communities for those with similar interests.

During the last two centuries, there has been a surge in the intensive use of

social media on a global scale. It has been noticed that social media

enables users to propagate their ideas, perspectives, interests, and

programs, among other things, since words may have varied meanings

depending on their context. Masood, Luqman, Feng, and Ali (2020).

This study was conducted using categories of social media,

multitasking behaviors, and performance derived from previous research.

This coordinated social media model would serve as the basis for

constructing a consensus-based model that may elucidate these linkages

more precisely. In this sense, the present work focuses on comprehending

the links between the causes and effects of social media from the

In this study, the relationship of social media with the student’s academic

performance conceived the conceptual framework based on the Input-Process-

Output system approach. This approach is composed of interrelated elements

that served as guides for the researchers in solving the problem.

Statement of the Problem

This research intends to find out the effects of media use on the study

habits of grade 11 students at Purisima Diocesan School Inc. throughout the

2022-2023 school year. The researchers will specifically explore solutions to the

following issues:

1. What is the demographic profile of respondents in terms of:

1.1 Gender;

1.2 Age;

2. Does social media can give you benefits to your education?

3. To what extent is the effect of social media on the study habits of

respondents?

4. Will social networking be beneficial to its respondent?

Hypothesis

The following hypotheses are generated by the researcher and were tested in

this study:

1. Students' social media addiction has no substantial effect on their

academic performance.

2. Students' exposure to social media networks does not significantly affect

their academic performance.

3. Students' academic results at Purisima Diocesan School, Inc. are not

greatly affected by their use of social media.

 4. There is no substantial difference in the use of social media networks by

male and female students.

5. There is no correlation between age and the usage of social media.

Scope and Limitation

Students in Grade 11 at Purisima Diocesan School Inc., which is situated

in Purisima, Tago, Surigao del Sur, will participate in this research to examine the

impact of social media platforms like as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and

Tiktok, among others, on the students' academic performance.

Significance of the Study

The results of this undertaking are deemed significant and instrumental to

the following:

Students. This study will make them realize of what social media bring

towards their academics. Improving their academic performances studies and

their personal behavior. Managing themselves with their control using the social

media to behave appropriately.

School and Its Administration. This project's findings will assist the

school's administration in understanding how social media influences students'

study habits and behavior. Aside from that, the situation will drive the school's

management to create programs that will serve as motivational reasons for

students to conduct responsibly with regard to their academics.

 Teachers. This study will aid instructors by enabling them to increase their

parental responsibilities among children impacted by social media. This would

inspire students to do better in all academic endeavors.

Future Researchers. This study will benefit for future researchers that will

undertake studies relevant to the present study.

Parents. Regarding their children's academic conduct, this research will

make all parents informed. This situation will inspire parents to pay more

attention to their children, as well as offer them with guidance and

encouragement, so that their children will be more engaged and involved in all

academic activities.

Definition of Terms

To better comprehend the research's concepts. The following terminology

are being defined according to their technical and operational application in the

context of this investigation.

This chapter presents an assortment of literature and, foreign and local

that is related to this study. In order to support the current inquiry, a variety of

material and concepts that have been gleaned from books, journals, and the

work of previous researchers that have an influence on the investigation have

been analyzed and evaluated.

measuring the digital world and a recognized source of digital marketing

analytics, Filipino internet users are the most active in online social networking.

comScore said in a news release that the Philippines had the greatest social

networking use in the Asia-Pacific region, with more than 90 percent of its Web

population accessing a social networking site in February 2010, followed by

Australia (89.6 percent) and Indonesia (88.8 percent).

Nottingham Treat University (2017) conducted a review of previous

research on personality traits and social media use. The authors conclude that it

may be plausible to speak specifically of 'Facebook Addiction Disorder' because

addiction criteria, such as neglect of personal life, mental preoccupation,

escapism, mood-altering experiences, tolerance, and concealment of addictive

behavior, appear to be present in some pages that excessively use social

networks.

Local

The large number of active internet users and status as the "most social nation"

in the Philippines are strongly related to the country's youthful demographic

population. According to an examination of figures by Statista, about 78.5 million

Filipino students use social media. It represents a staggering 71% of the total

country's population.

In the Philippines, individuals utilize social media not just to communicate

with one another but also to educate themselves. On the other hand, it has been

seen that young people use social media platforms to an unhealthy extent, which

may have an impact on the amount of work that students do for their at-home

projects. Al-Deen and Hendricks (2011) state that social media platforms such as

Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube have seen explosive growth over the course of

the last decade, attracting vast numbers of users

research that social knowledge applications may significantly improve student

participation, resource sharing, and critical thinking. Social network and media

technologies in this context include Blog, Wiki, Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter,

among others. Numerous studies have been undertaken to analyze the impact of

social media on student academic attainment. According to Choney (2010),

MehMood & Taswir (2013), Kist (2008), and Jacobsen & Forste (2011), the use

of technology, such as the internet, is one of the most significant factors that

might effect students' educational performance in a positive or negative way.

Local

Recent local study indicates that the vast majority of young Filipinos own a

mobile phone (78%), have social networking accounts (83%), and have access

to the internet (59%). There is evidence that young people are too concerned

with the Internet. A young Filipino spends six hours per week on the internet on

average, whereas 3.5% of teenagers spend at least 35 hours per week online.

The Philippines' strong smartphone adoption is predicted to enhance internet

use, especially social media.

Synthesis

 Teenagers are avid users of social networking sites (SNS). The purpose

of this study was to investigate the impact of social networking sites on students'

academic achievement. Thus, the researchers would provide students and future

researchers with knowledge on the impacts of social networking sites.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

This chapter focuses on the systematic explanation of the conceptual

framework and research technique, including the research method, the research

environment, the respondents, the research instrument, the questionnaire, and

the data treatment.

Research Design

A descriptive survey was used as the research strategy for this

investigation. This design is categorized as Analysis, Planning, Test, and

Research because it allows the researcher to gather data using standardized

collecting processes based on highly organized research instruments and well-

defined study topics and associated variables.

Research Locale

Eleventh-grade students of Purisima Diocesan School Inc. participated in

this study. St. Falcon Tago, Surigao Del Sur, is where the school will be located.

Therefore, the school, administration, and instructors of Purisima Diocesan

School Inc. are being directed in the formulation and conception of various

techniques that would increase the academic motivation of pupils.

Respondents of the Study

The population of the study will consist of the senior high school students

of Purisima Diocesan School Inc, S.Y. 2022 – 2023, with a total of forty students

enrolled in grade 11. The whole population will comprise the study's sample or

responders. The distribution of responders by year level is shown in the following

table.

Sampling Technique

The researchers will utilize the Total Population Sampling to identify the

sample. The purpose of the questionnaire was to gather information on the

impact of social media on the academic performance of Purisima Diocesan

School Inc. The questionnaire is divided into two sections. Part I includes the

respondent's age and gender, as well as their demographic description. The

second section examines the impact of social media on students' academic

achievement.

Parts II, III, and IV of the study questionnaire were a checklist with six (6)

and seven (7) questions ranging from 1 to 5. It is the same as (1) 1-strongly

disagree, (2) disagree, (3) neutral, (4) agree, and (5) strongly agree.

Data Gathering Instrument

The researchers will use a questionnaire to collect the essential data and

information to complete and implement this project. For reasons of dependability,

the researchers have conducted inquiries and consulted with specialists that

have the same qualities as the target respondents in order to identify the areas

for development.

The finished questionnaire consists of numerous sections that will collect

data on the demographic profile of respondents, their attitudes toward

academics, and the influence of using social media on their academic

achievement.

Data Gathering Procedure

 The responders are provided with the finished questionnaire. Prior to

administering the survey, the researchers will get authorization from the school

principal to conduct a survey of high school pupils. The corresponding advisors

of each level must also be notified about the survey and requested to help with

the distribution and collection of the questionnaire from respondents. The

researchers were briefed about the objective of the survey and the

questionnaire's substance and administration. The length of the survey

administration was one day.

Statistical Treatment

Students' questionnaire responses are statistically examined in

accordance with the study's data needs. Consideration is given to descriptive

statistics such as frequency count, weighted mean, percentage, and rank.

The preceding table 1 contributed to and described the outcome of

information acquired based on respondent replies. It was discovered that the

majority of participants in this research are between the ages of 16 and 17 and

are female.

In order to get the great outcomes of this research, each respondent's remarks

were tabulated along with their matching frequency and proportion. On

the basis of the gathered data, researchers were required to examine and

elaborate by doing calculations.

According to Table 2, the question "Are you able to balance playing time

with studying?" had the highest weighted mean score of 4.2 (Agree). The

question "Does Playing Online Games Help in Your Studies?" had the lowest

weighted mean score of 2.5 (Disagree). These are the conclusions that may be

drawn from an examination of the information presented in Table 2.

The average score in Table 2 was 3.50, indicating that the majority of

respondents felt that social media may affect schooling.

The impact with the greatest weighted mean, 4.2 (agree), is "Social media

According to the table that is presented above the Table 4, the statement

that "Social media can help the students communicate" has the highest weighted

mean, 4.2 (Strongly agree), and the statement that "Social media can be used as

relaxing or comforting platform" has the lowest weighted mean, 3.7 (Agree).
 These findings are based on an analysis of Table 3, which is presented

above the Table 4. The aggregate score for Table 4 was 3.7, which indicates that

the vast majority of respondents agreed that participating in social networking is

advantageous for them. Because of the way that social networking operates, it is

helpful to be aware of how popular the technology is with social media

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter summarizes the researchers' conclusions and

recommendations. This chapter will go over the findings of the analysis in order

to address the effects of social media on academic performance.

Conclusion

Due to the rapid advancement of technology in recent years, the usage of

social media has grown pervasive and widespread over the globe. People from

various areas of life utilize social networking platforms. Students in particular

have gotten so used to social media that they might spend a significant amount

of time on it. This study investigated the influence of social media on student

academic achievement.

The findings indicate that time spent on social media might have a

detrimental impact on pupils' academic performance. Therefore, our

recommendation is that for students to be more productive, they should spend

less time engaged in social media activities.

Recommendation

The following recommendations were made based upon the survey, the

results, and the institution's own analysis:

1. Students may be urged to restrict the amount of time they spend on social

networking sites per day and encouraged to use those hours to increase

their knowledge by reading novels and academic publications.

2. Students using Internet-capable mobile phones may be encouraged to

utilize them to enhance their library study, as opposed to their customary

practice of conversing with pals constantly.

3. The parents will enforce time management and encourage their children to

refrain from engaging in social media activities.
