2 Flash*
3 Jumbled letter transition Entropy The measure of the energy dispersal in a
“Entropy” system. And is often described as a measurement of
disorder. The chaos and disorder of a system.
4 Zoom into ice This explains why Ice melts, why hot drinks turn cold,
how a drop of dye disperses in a container filled with
water, and why cream spreads in coffee.
(insert clips)
5 flash* (Molecular level of When the water is in a solid state, we can say that this
solid) Is in a lower level of entropy. As the ice melts down into
water, this turns into a higher level of entropy as the
molecules. This is because solids have fewer ways of
arranging their molecules; the energy of their system.
And so entropy decreases.
6 Insert Table A Now, Try to analyze these two scenarios. Which one has
Insert Table B more entropy?
7 Table B shot Now, If we look at table B, the energy is more spread
out. We can say that it has a higher entropy state.
8 Universe clip The second law of thermodynamics does not tell us how
or when energy spreads. Just if given the chance,it will.
9 Food dye into water Remember that entropy always increases. Matter goes
from a low entropy state to a higher one.
Let’s imagine that this food coloring is all the energy in
the universe. At first, The food coloring falls into the
water in a very predictable manner. But immediately
after hitting the water, it starts to spread out. Forming
more and more complex patterns, meaning it’s entropy
is increasing
10 A clip of the food coloring As time goes on, the dye is already dispersed in this
already dissolved into the bowl of water. Nothing new can happen.
water But think of this on a larger scale. Think of this as the
universe like the bowl of water, in a certain amount of
time, energy will be dispersed throughout the universe
and nothing new will ever happen. Because for
something to happen, entropy needs to increase. This is
what scientists call Thermodynamic equilibrium.
11 Clips of space/universe The law of thermodynamics is eventually going to
destroy everything and everything. But who cares?
Because of entropy, the universe has gifted you years of
consciousness. You. living in the most exciting time in
history. The chances of earth forming, life evolving, and
you being born is so incomprehensibly low.
