Research Instrument for Police Services Study

This chapter discusses the research methodology used in the study, including the research design, subjects, instruments, data collection procedures, and statistical analysis techniques. Specifically, it used a quantitative non-experimental correlational design to understand the relationship between the extent of police services and level of crime prevention in Tagum City. Data was collected through a researcher-developed questionnaire distributed to residents, and analyzed using mean scores and Pearson's r correlation to determine the significance of relationships between variables.

Chapter 3

METHOD

Discussed in this chapter are the research design; research subject; research

instrument; data gathering procedure; and statistical treatment of the data.

Research Design

The study used a quantitative non-experimental using correlational technique

which employed the design of the study the data gathered from the police services and

its crime prevention outcomes in Tagum City. This study attempted to explain the

relationship of the extent of police services and the level of crime prevention outcomes

Tagum City and tend to seek facts to the existence of the relation of both variables in

the study.

Quantitative non-experimental using correlational technique was used which

involved collecting data in order to hypothesis, to answer questions about, the options of

the people about the issue. This type of research involves variables that are not

manipulated by the researcher and instead are studied as they exist and relies on

interpretation, observation or interactions to come to a conclusion with a high level of

external validity (Belli, 2008). The researchers chose it because the study is done at the

present time and is the most appropriate for the title of the study.

The study is composed of one group of researcher which made a questionnaire

to obtain the date needed that would answer the mentioned problems. Quantitative in a

way that it tends to examine the relation of the extent of police service and level of

prevention outcomes in Tagum City and that is used correlation for it tend to find the

significant relationship between the two variables.

Research Subject

The researchers respondent and resource persons of the study were the extent

of police service and level of prevention outcomes in Tagum City. To determine the

number of sample of the study, the researcher used the solving formula for the

computation.

Research Instrument

The instrument used in this study is a researcher made questionnaire. It is made

in simple, brief and concise sentences to provide the respondents basic understanding

about the purpose of the study. The questionnaire was content validated by the

committee prior to the distribution and administration. This questionnaire was used to

measure the extent of police service of Tagum City and the level of crime prevention

outcomes. The parameter used in this is shown below.

For the extent of police service of Tagum City the parameter limits uses as

follows:

Ranges of Means Extent Interpretation

4.3-5.0 Very Extensive This means that the extent of police

service of Tagum City is very much
observed.

3.5-4.2 Much Extensive This means that the extent of police

service of Tagum City is much
observed.

2.7-3.4 Moderately Extensive This means that the extent of police

service of Tagum City is moderately
observed.
1.9- 2.6 Fairly Extensive This means that the extent of police
service of Tagum City is fairly observed.

1.0-1.8 Not Extensive This means that the extent of police

service of Tagum City is not observed.

For the level of crime prevention outcomes in Tagum City the parameter limits

uses as follows

Ranges of Means Level Interpretation

4.3-5.0 Outstanding This means that the level of crime

prevention outcomes of Tagum City is
very much evident.

3.5-4.2 Very Satisfactory This means that the level of crime

prevention outcomes of Tagum City is
much evident.

2.7-3.4 Satisfactory This means that the level of crime

prevention outcomes of Tagum City is
moderately evident

1.9- 2.6 Fair This means that the level of crime

prevention outcomes of Tagum City is
fairly evident

1.0-1.8 Low This means that the level of crime

prevention outcomes of Tagum City is
not evident.
Data Gathering

The researchers made a letter request addressed to the Dean of College and to

the City Mayor asking permission to conduct the study among the residents of Tagum

City on their perception on the extent of police service of Tagum City in terms of
attentiveness, reliability and responsiveness. While the level of crime prevention

outcomes of Tagum City with the indicators of reducing crime and disorder, reducing

fear of crime and improving quality of life.

In conducting our data gathering we made sure that we did not violate and we

correctly implemented the IATF protocols to prevent the spread of the covid-9 virus we

wore a face mask and face shield during the survey and we made sure that we

sanitized tour hands of our respondents before we handed out our questionnaires and

also we sanitized all our writing materials that was used in the survey to ensure that our

respondents and us to avoid infection of the covid-19 virus and to also as a group we

made sure that we follow the recommended social distancing.

The questionnaire was randomly distributed by the researcher to the

respondents. The questionnaire was distributed and was explained to the respondents

as the rationale of the study. The questionnaire was retrieved right after the

respondents have finished answering all the items.

Statistical Tools

The responses to the items in the questionnaire were tallied and interpreted

using the following statistical tools.

Mean. This was used to determine extent of police service of Tagum City and

level of crime prevention outcomes.

Pearson-r. This tool was used to determine the significant relationship between

the extent of police service of Tagum City and level of crime prevention outcomes.

Common questions

Powered by AI

The parameters for evaluating the extent of police service range from 'Not Extensive' (1.0-1.8) to 'Very Extensive' (4.3-5.0). In contrast, crime prevention outcomes are evaluated from 'Low' (1.0-1.8) to 'Outstanding' (4.3-5.0), indicating a parallel structure but differing terminologies for interpretation .

The timing of the study during a pandemic could affect findings by altering public perceptions of police services and safety concerns, possibly increasing fear of crime due to economic or social instability. Pandemic-related restrictions may also impact crime rates and police effectiveness, skewing results from typical circumstances .

Interpreting police service as 'Very Extensive' and crime prevention as 'Outstanding' implies current strategies are effective, suggesting a continuation or strengthening of current practices. If lower ratings were present, it would indicate potential areas for improvement, guiding targeted policy developments to enhance police performance and reduce crime .

Challenges include ensuring participant understanding and accurate responses given the concise format required for clarity. Additionally, conducting surveys during a pandemic necessitates strict adherence to health protocols, which can hinder participant engagement and response rate due to the need for sanitization and social distancing measures .

The study considers attentiveness, reliability, and responsiveness as crucial dimensions of police service that may influence crime prevention outcomes. These factors are evaluated to determine how effectively police services can reduce crime, alleviate fear of crime, and improve the community's quality of life .

The choice of a single group for data collection simplifies the study design and focuses on a specific demographic, making it easier to control certain variables. However, this choice limits the generalizability of the findings, as results may not be applicable to other populations or contexts .

Potential limitations include the inability to establish causation due to the lack of manipulation of independent variables and random assignment. The study can identify correlations but cannot confirm a causal relationship between police services and crime prevention outcomes. Additionally, external factors influencing these variables cannot be controlled .

Ethical considerations include ensuring informed consent, protecting participants' health by adhering to pandemic-related safety protocols such as wearing masks and maintaining social distancing, and minimizing any potential harm or risk of infection. Researchers must balance the need for data collection with participants' right to safety and well-being .

The Pearson-r is appropriate because it measures the strength and direction of the linear relationship between two continuous variables, which in this study, are the extent of police services and the level of crime prevention outcomes. It aims to determine if there is a statistically significant correlation between these variables .

The main research method used in the study is the quantitative non-experimental correlational technique. It was chosen because it allows the researchers to examine the relationship between the extent of police services and the level of crime prevention outcomes without manipulating the variables .
