Music's Role in Alleviating Academic Anxiety

This document discusses three studies on the effects of music on academic anxiety and performance. The first study found that listening to nature sounds after academic stress reduced negative moods. The second study found that both actively playing and passively listening to music reduced test anxiety. The third study found that students who listened to classical music during lectures performed better on exams than those who did not. Brain activity research also suggests music improves brain function and focus while promoting happiness and arousal. Students performed best on cognitive tests with moderately dynamic music that was not distracting.

Music’s Upper Hand on Improving the Academic Anxiety of Grade 12 HUMSS Students

Review of Related Studies

After a stressful academic experience, people's moods improve and decrease when they listen to

music that mimics nature. It would appear that white noise is the most detrimental: It makes the

good mood worse and makes the bad mood better. Emotions are fundamental in an educational

setting that focuses on a person's holistic development. Therefore, it is essential for the teacher to

be familiar with and proficient in the most effective tools for managing those emotions. Teachers

must therefore be aware of music's ability to influence mood. They should also be aware of the

fact that the students' moods will change depending on when, how, and what kind of music they

use. (Faus et al., 2019)

Even after a brief musical intervention, the use of music appears to have helped reduce test

anxiety, regardless of whether students actively played music or passively listened to music. This

investigation into the use of music as a means of reducing stress and anxiety demonstrates that

this may be a promising area for future research and a significant addition to the curriculum of a

school for health care professionals. (Galal et al., 2021)

A study that was published in the journal Learning and Individual Differences found that, in

comparison to their peers who did not listen to classical music during a lecture, students who did

did better on exams. However, this may have more to do with classical music as a whole than

Mozart specifically. EEG data were used to measure brain activity in another study titled "The

impact of music on the bioelectrical oscillations of the brain," which suggested that music

improved brain function. Students are said to be able to focus better on the task at hand when

they listen to music because it is thought to do so while simultaneously promoting happiness and

arousal. In the experiment, students performed better on cognitive-based tests when the music

was moderately dynamic and did not become distracting. (Ngo, 2022)

Emotional regulation through music plays a critical role in students' holistic educational development by aligning mood management with academic activities. By improving mood and reducing anxiety, music aids in creating a conducive learning environment, helping students engage more effectively and perform academically better, thus supporting their comprehensive growth .

Brief musical interventions effectively reduce academic-related anxiety comparable to longer engagements, suggesting that even short exposure to music can significantly impact stress levels. This efficiency highlights music's profound effect on emotional regulation without lengthy exposure, making it a practical tool for quick emotional relief in educational contexts .

The mechanisms by which classical music influences academic performance and brain function could include enhanced concentration and arousal, as evidenced by EEG studies showing improved bioelectrical brain oscillations. The positive affect induced by classical music contributes to focused attention and heightened cognitive function, facilitating better academic performance .

Music interventions show potential value in educational programs by effectively reducing test anxiety. Both active engagement with music and passive listening have been shown to alleviate stress, offering a promising tool for educational curricula aimed at healthcare professionals. These findings suggest that incorporating music-based stress relief strategies could enhance learning environments .

White noise might impact mood and cognitive performance differently because it can make a good mood worse yet improve a bad mood, suggesting variable response depending on initial emotional state. Its non-melodic and consistent nature possibly lacks the positive arousal effects seen with melodic music, influencing cognitive processes differently .

Different types of music impact students distinctively: nature sounds can enhance mood effectively, beneficial post-stressful academic tasks, while classical music during lectures can improve exam performance by boosting cognitive focus. Understanding these nuances allows educators to tailor music choices to specific academic contexts for optimal student benefit .

Integrating music could be most beneficial in scenarios involving high-stress situations, such as before exams, supporting stress management, and enhancing cognitive performance during learning activities. Implementing music as background during study sessions or using it for relaxation can improve students' emotional and cognitive responses to academic challenges .

Exposure to music influences mood by alleviating academic stress levels in students. Specific types of music, like those mimicking nature, can lighten moods, while white noise has mixed effects. For educators, this means utilizing music thoughtfully as a tool to manage classroom emotions, understanding when and what type of music is beneficial, thereby supporting students' holistic development .

Educators should consider potential overreliance on music, individual music preferences, and possible distractions. The effectiveness varies by student; what calms one may distract another. Additionally, inappropriate music choices could worsen anxiety or disrupt focus, necessitating careful selection and application tailored to student needs and academic goals .

Music, especially classical, tends to improve students' cognitive performance by enhancing focus, promoting happiness, and increasing arousal. Studies show that students exposed to classical music during lectures perform better on exams. The presence of music, when dynamic and non-distracting, aids students in concentrating and performing better on tasks .
