My name is Dian Prokopiev and I went to school in the IGCSE program for the last 2 years.

It is
the British IGCSE which includes classes such as Computer science, English, Higher Maths,
Buisness and Economics. Before that I have studied in an international IB school in Sweden for
3 years and finished MYP4. I would like to apply for Meridian 22 because it is also an
international school with the IB system. I have good knowledge in english language, my last 5
years of school have been completely in english.

I have always been better in Math compared to the other subjects and right now I'm leaning
towards Economics or Computer Science. I have had a class similar to Economics in MYP
(Middle year program) in Sweden and computer science in IGSCE. I also have Business,
Economics and Computer science in my current online school appart from Math and English. I
have also had Spanish and German as second languages but it didnt go in depth. I found
Economics interesting and I got good grades on it. I also like Math because it is mostly logic and
following the preset rules.

Outside of school I go to a coding course in Telerik academy. It is held 3 hours every

Wednesday. I had to complete a test with logical questions amongst others and the students
with the highest scores got accepted. There we have a choice to learn web development, game
development or digital science. I chose game development for this year and next year I will
apply for web development. In game development we learn how to code games and are
currently developing our own. A lot of people would compare coding to math but it is closer to
learning a second language than learning math in my opinion. Most calculations that you have
to do are addition, division or multiplication which can also be done using a calculator if not in
your head. You also have to use logic to figure out how to make something happen or why it is
happening at all. It is exciting to learn to code and it can give you insight on what is going on
behind the scenes on the program that you are using.

I know about the IB program from my 3 years of studying in the Swedish school.. My last 2
years I have been studying in an online IGSCE school because of the pandemic. Our family
plans were to be able to spend more time with both of my parents between Bulgaria and
Tenerife. There I focused more into Economics/Business and Computer science as we got to
choose our subjects from a large variety. It was good to be able to choose the classes to study
so I can study stuff that are more likely to be interesting for me. In Sweden we had a choice
between Art, Music or Design. I chose design which was the closest thing connected to
computers. Art or music dont interest me as much so it was the best choice. In one of the years
when we had design we made a movie in groups. In the other year we had to design new
products in 3d designing tools on a computer.

In the future I want to have the choice to work something connected with Economics and
Business like maybe a financial expert in a store or to code programs and games. I want to get
into an economics university or computer science university. IB offers great diplomas that
universities like and are more likely to accept than others.

The choice of educational paths shows a deliberate alignment with the student's career aspirations in Economics and Computer Science. By actively selecting courses such as Economics, Business, Higher Math, and Computer Science in the IGCSE and continuing with IB, the student is positioning themselves towards these fields. The narrative reflects a strategic tailoring of education to match career aspirations, facilitated by international programs that allow the exploration of diverse subjects, providing a broad foundation for future specialization. Additionally, extracurricular coding courses supplement their academic pursuits with practical skills .

Extracurricular activities played a crucial role in shaping the student's educational interests and reinforcing their career aspirations. The coding course at Telerik Academy, for example, offered the student real-world experience in game development, fostering a deeper affinity for Computer Science. Such activities provided a practical application of theoretical knowledge and helped the student clarify career goals. They allowed the student to explore interests outside traditional academic subjects, demonstrating the integration of logic and creativity in platforms like developing games, which is an interest not fully realized in school curricula alone .

The design courses contributed to the student's understanding of computer-related fields by providing exposure to computer-aided design and creative problem-solving. By opting for design over art or music, the student engaged in creating projects using 3D design tools. This hands-on experience with design software and tools is indicative of computer science applications, enhancing their technical skills and familiarity with the computer interface, thereby indirectly supporting their aspirations in computer science and digital applications .

The student perceives several benefits from the IB program, including the ability to choose subjects that are interesting, which aligns with their career and academic interests in Economics and Computer Science. The IB program's international recognition is also seen as advantageous because it provides diplomas that universities prefer for admissions, making it more likely for the student to be accepted into desired Economics or Computer Science universities. Additionally, the breadth of the curriculum in the IB provides a balanced education, equipping students with skills valuable both academically and for future career pursuits .

The student draws logical connections between Mathematics and Computer Science by recognizing the structured thinking and problem-solving aspects common to both disciplines. The foundation in Mathematics, particularly logic and rule-following, is emphasized as beneficial to understanding and applying programming concepts. Although coding involves basic arithmetic calculations, the underlying logic used to develop algorithms parallels mathematical problem solving. The student's inclination towards math further nurtures their coding skills, resulting in a clearer understanding of how to construct and troubleshoot coding tasks .

The student describes coding as akin to learning a second language rather than purely mathematical, emphasizing that while basic arithmetic like addition, division, or multiplication is used, these can often be done with a calculator. The core of coding is understanding logic to make things happen or to troubleshoot issues. Coding is seen as an opportunity to apply logical reasoning to solve problems and develop creative solutions, which parallels the structure of Mathematics but requires a unique set of skills akin to language acquisition, enhancing logical problem-solving capabilities .

Viewing coding as akin to learning a second language may lead the student to approach it with strategies typically used in language acquisition, such as immersive practice, memorization of syntax, understanding context, and continuous application to reinforce skills. This approach fosters a systematic learning pathway that prioritizes comprehension over memorization, enhancing fluency in programming languages. The student might employ exploratory learning techniques like building small projects and emphasizing logical thinking alongside technical understanding, which supports the development of adaptive and practical coding skills .

The student's experience in the IGCSE and IB programs provide a solid foundation and exposure to subjects like Economics and Computer Science. The student mentions having studied Economics in the IGCSE and having a class similar to Economics during MYP in Sweden, both of which they found interesting and received good grades. This experience has nurtured an inclination towards Economics. Similarly, the exposure to Computer Science classes and attending a coding course at Telerik Academy, where the student enjoys learning game development, strengthens their interest in programming, further influenced by the logical and structured nature of Math, which is another of the student's strong subjects .

Pursuing higher education in both Economics and Computer Science can offer the student multiple benefits. It can enhance career flexibility and open up diverse opportunities in fields that intersect technology and economic analysis, such as fintech or data science. A dual knowledge base can also provide competitive advantages in the job market, particularly in roles requiring an understanding of algorithms, financial markets, and electronic trading systems. This interdisciplinary approach can foster innovation at the intersection of technology and business, preparing the student for emergent roles in economic strategy and technological development .

The student's language skills and international education significantly contribute to reaching their academic and career goals. Having studied in English for the past five years has equipped the student with a high proficiency in the language, essential for business and technology fields. Experience in international schools has exposed the student to diverse educational systems like the IB, which is globally recognized and facilitates potential admission into international universities. Additionally, having some knowledge of Spanish and German, though not in depth, could provide an edge in global business environments .
