Set Axis Ranges in SAP Analytics Cloud

This document discusses how to manually or dynamically set the axis ranges for charts in SAP Analytics Cloud. It can be done manually for bar, column, stacked area, stacked bar/column, waterfall, and box plots charts by editing the axis and entering minimum and maximum values. Line, bubble, scatterplot, combination stacked column & line, and combination column & line charts allow setting the axis range manually or dynamically by turning on dynamic minimum and maximum value setting in the axis editor. Dynamically setting the range will automatically adjust the values based on the data.

Set Axis Ranges Manually or

Dynamically

 About Chart Axis Ranges

 How to Dynamically Set the Axis Range

You can manually or dynamically change the axis range of a chart in SAP Analytics Cloud.

About Chart Axis Ranges

By default, charts include the zero axis even if there are no values close to zero. This can
leave a lot of white space in your chart.

To minimize whitespace, you can manually set ranges for your values, or you can let the
system dynamically set the minimum and maximum values.

Example
The bubble chart Y and X axis intersect at 0, but your data starts at 50 million on one axis
and 0.05 million on the other. Even with scaling, there is still some unused space near the
intersection. By changing the axis minimum value, you can eliminate more of that empty
space.
You can set the axis range for multiple chart types.
Manually or Dynamically Set Axis Ranges

Depending on the chart type, its axis range can be set either manually or dynamically.

Manual or Dynamic Chart Type

Manual only Bar/Column

Stacked Area

Stacked Bar/Column

Waterfall

Box Plot

Manual or dynamic Combination Stacked Column & Line

Combination Column & Line

How to Manually Set the Axis Range

1. Choose your chart.

2. Choose   (More Actions)  Edit Axis.

3. Enter your minimum and maximum values.

4. Choose Apply.

Tip
To reset the chart back to the default axis values, in the Edit Axis dialog, for each axis
select   (Reset to auto).

How to Dynamically Set the Axis Range

1. Choose your chart.

2. Choose   (More Actions)  Edit Axis.

3. Find the toggle for Dynamically Set Min/Max and set it to On.

If your chart has more than one min/max toggle available, set the toggle for each axis.

4. Choose Apply.

Dynamically setting the axis range improves the visualization of data by automatically adjusting the minimum and maximum values to better fit the data distribution. This approach minimizes the whitespace in charts where data points are not close to zero or other default values, hence removing unnecessary empty spaces near the axis intersections and maximizing the use of the chart space .

Manually setting the axis range allows precise control over the display, enabling the user to focus on specific data ranges and reduce clutter. However, it can be time-consuming as it requires specific knowledge or experimentation with the data range. Alternatively, dynamically adjusting the axis range simplifies the process by automatically setting optimum min and max values based on the data, which is beneficial for handling large datasets or when data updates frequently. However, the dynamic setting might not always align with specific analytical goals if the user needs specific value focus or granularity .

Removing unnecessary whitespace by adjusting axis ranges enhances data interpretation by providing a more focused view of the critical data points. This approach emphasizes the variability and trends within the dataset, making it easier to identify patterns and outliers. It provides a clearer and more efficient use of space, reducing viewer distraction and improving the engagement with the presented data .

In SAP Analytics Cloud, setting the axis range manually for a waterfall chart involves specifying absolute value ranges since it deals with cumulative and sequential data impacts, highlighting net changes explicitly. For line charts, manual axis setting typically focuses on specific value ranges to emphasize trends or fluctuations over time. The difference in data representation and emphasis necessitates different considerations and methodologies for manual axis setting .

To enable dynamic axis range setting, select the chart and choose 'More Actions' followed by 'Edit Axis.' Locate the toggle for 'Dynamically Set Min/Max' and turn it on. If the chart possesses multiple min/max toggles, set each applicable toggle. Complete the process by selecting 'Apply' to update the chart dynamically .

It is preferable to manually set the axis range for a bar/column chart when specific interest in certain data intervals exists, such as focusing on sections with significant variations or relevant data points that may be dwarfed when included in a larger scaling context. Additionally, manual settings are advantageous when needing uniformity in visualizations across multiple charts for comparison purposes .

Charts supported for dynamic axis range adjustment in SAP Analytics Cloud include combination stacked column & line, combination column & line, line charts, bubble charts, and scatterplots. These types can have their axis ranges set either manually or dynamically, depending on user preference and chart characteristics .

To manually set an axis range, first choose your chart. Then, select 'More Actions' and navigate to 'Edit Axis.' Enter your desired minimum and maximum values. Finally, choose 'Apply' to update the chart with the new axis range .

In SAP Analytics Cloud, users can revert to default axis ranges by opening the 'Edit Axis' dialog and selecting 'Reset to auto' for each axis, which resets the chart to its original default axis values .

Default axis settings that include a zero axis may lead to issues in data visualization by introducing excessive whitespace, especially if the dataset values start at significantly higher values. This can obscure detailed patterns and trends by focusing on a range that lacks data, hence diminishing the clarity and effectiveness of the representation .
