Special Curves: Involute & Spiral

This lesson plan is for a technical drawing class on special curves. The lesson will focus on involutes and Archimedean spirals. Students will learn about the meaning and real-life applications of these curves, and practice constructing them through examples. Evaluation will involve short writing assignments to assess understanding of the concepts and drawing additional examples of the special curves. The goal is for students to fully understand involutes and spirals, how they are used, and be able to construct representations of them.

LESSON PLAN FOR WEEK [9] ENDING [08-07-

2022]

SUBJECT: TECHNICAL DRAWING

TOPIC: SPECIAL CURVES
TIME:
SCHEDULE:
AVERAGE AGE: 15 YEARS
LEVEL: SS2
NUMBER OF LEARNERS:

TIME TABLE FIT: In the previous lesson, the learners had learnt about the meaning of
cycloid, trochoids, epicycloid and hypocycloid, their real life application and the construction of
these special curves.

MAIN AIM: The learners will be able to elaborate on the meaning of Involute and
Archimedean spiral, identify the real life application and the construction of these special
curves.

SUBSIDIARY AIMS: By the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to
1. Elaborate on the meaning of Involute and Archimedean spiral
2. Identify some of the real life application of Involute and Archimedean spiral
3. Construct Involute and Archimedean spiral using different methods

PERSONAL AIM: To ensure that the learners fully understand the meaning of Involute and
Archimedean spiral, the real life application of these special curves and the construction of
these special curves.

ASSUMPTION: The leaners may have seen or heard about Involute and Archimedean spiral,
their real life application and construction from their textbook or online.

ANTICIPATED PROBLEM: The learner may find it difficult to understand the meaning of
Involute and Archimedean spiral, the real life application and the construction of these special
curves.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION: The teacher will have to explain extensively about the meaning of
Involute and Archimedean spiral, the real life application and the construction of these special
curves.

TEACHING MATERIAL: Drawing materials and equipment, Posters, models and Charts

LEAD IN: The special curves been treated today in class is involute and spirals. Involute is
formed when we unwind or wind a thread from a cylindrical pipe or some other shape of pipe,
while Archimedean spiral is generated when the moves at uniform velocity towards the center

PROCEDURE

STEP 1: MEANING OF INVOLUTE AND ARCHIMEDEAN SPIRAL

 Involute: is defined as the path of a point on a straight line which rolls without slip along the
circumference of a cylinder.
 Archimedean spiral: It is a curve generated by a point which revolves around a fixed point
and at the same moves towards it.

STEP 2: REAL LIFE APPLICATION OF INVOLUTE AND ARCHIMEDEAN SPIRAL

Real life application of Involute
1. It is mostly used in designing cogwheel or tooth-wheel which are used in rotating machines.
2. The involute has some properties that makes it extremely important to the gear industry
3. The involute of a circle is also an important shape in gas compressing
4. Involute is also used in winding clock and toys wherein a winding key is used to motion the
spiral spring in a circular involute

Real life application of Archimedean spiral

1. The movement of particles in a moving tornado
2. The roll of paper tape
3. Spring of clock

STEP 3: CONSTRUCTION OF INVOLUTE AND ARCHIMEDEAN SPIRAL

Example 1: Draw an involute of a circle of diameter 40mmm. Also draw normal and tangent at
a point 100mm from the center of the circle.

Example 2: Draw an involute of a pentagon of sides 30mmm long. Also draw normal and
tangent to the curve.

Example 2: Prepare a drawing of an Archimedean spiral of one revolution with greatest and
least radii being 80mmm and 30mmm respectively.

INTERACTION PATTERN: The use of explanatory, discussion, play-way, sketching,
teacher to learner and learner to learner method in her teaching method

STUDENTS’ EVALUATION:
1. In your own words, write shot notes on the following
a) Involute
b) Archimedean spiral
2. Identify two practical application of Involute and Archimedean spiral
3. Draw an involute of a hexagon of sides 30mm long. Also draw normal and tangent to the
curve.

TEACHER’S EVALUATION: The learners fully understood the meaning of Involute and
Archimedean spiral, their application and the construction of these special curves.

ASSIGNMENT:
1. Elaborate briefly on the following
a) Involute
b) Archimedean spiral
2. Identify two practical application of Involute and Archimedean spiral
3. Draw an involute of an octagon of sides 25mm long. Also draw normal and tangent to the
curve
4. Construct an Archimedean spiral of one revolution with greatest and least radii being
90mmm and 20mmm respectively. Draw a normal and tangent at a point 50mm from the
pole.

CONCLUSION: Special curves are any curves with well know properties. Loosely speaking,
they are “interesting” for one reason or another. Special curves range from the fairly simple
(circles, ellipses, and hyperbolas) to the relatively complex curves.

BIBLICAL PRINCIPLE: MORAL ORDER: God’s moral order is designed for the good of
humans and all of society. [Matt. 19:17]
BIBLICAL INTEGRATED LESSON: By the end of the lesson, the learner will be able to
understand that as God has designed the moral order for the good of humanity and society so
special curves have been designed to aid in the construction and inventions of humans which
will benefit the society.
