Finding unit Rates

When the denominator of a rate is 1, we call the rate a unit rate. We usually use the key word per or
the division symbol / to indicate a unit rate. For example:
If a student earns $8.50 per hour, it is the same as $8.50/hour, and means $8.50 for every 1 hour of
work.
Find each unit rate. Round your answer to the nearest hundredth.

1. type 800 words in 12 minutes 2. 192 students in 4 buses

________ words per minute ________ in each bus

3. 357 miles in 5 hours 4. 8 ducks for $23.60

________ miles per hour $________ per duck

First, determine the unit cost by dividing total cost by quantity: $71.40 / 3 = $23.80 per pair. For 8 pairs, multiply the unit cost by 8: $23.80 * 8 = $190.40. This estimation helps in budgeting by projecting future expenses based on current rates .

Richard should collect 35 chickens * 3 eggs/chicken = 105 eggs daily. This illustrates the multiplication of a scalar quantity (35 chickens) by a constant productivity rate (3 eggs per chicken), a fundamental application of multiplication .

First, calculate the cost per penguin for each option. For the 84 penguins at $13,597, the unit cost is $13,597 / 84 = $161.87 per penguin. For the 50 penguins at $795.95, the unit cost is $795.95 / 50 = $15.92 per penguin. The second option is cheaper per penguin, making it the better buy .

The unit price for the 5-gallon bucket is $97.45 / 5 = $19.49 per gallon, while the 1-gallon bucket costs $21.95 per gallon. The 5-gallon bucket offers a lower price per gallon, making it a better economical choice .

Rounding to the nearest hundredth ensures precision while maintaining usability in real-world scenarios, reducing error in financial and quantitative calculations. This precision impacts decision-making by providing clearer, more accurate result interpretations, crucial for budgeting and comparisons .

To calculate gas mileage, divide miles driven by gallons used: 825 miles / 38 gallons = 21.71 miles per gallon. This efficiency metric affects environmental impact by indicating fuel consumption per unit distance and economic cost by determining how much fuel is needed for trips .

To determine the unit rate for typing 800 words in 12 minutes, divide 800 by 12, which equals approximately 66.67 words per minute. This rate implies that the person can type about 66.67 words every minute, showcasing their typing speed .

Calculate Morgan's average points per game by dividing total points by games played: 41 points / 3 games = approximately 13.67 points per game. For an 11-game season, estimate by multiplying average per game by number of games: 13.67 * 11 = 150 points .

Divide the total earnings by hours worked to find the hourly wage: $134 / 8 hours = $16.75 per hour. This reflects the earn rate indicating how much is earned for each hour of work .

First, calculate the unit cost per ounce. The 48 oz drink costs $1.39 / 48 = $0.0289 per oz, and the 32 oz drink costs $0.89 / 32 = $0.0278 per oz. Despite the lower per-ounce cost of the 32 oz option, the 48 oz provides more beverage at a slightly higher cost per ounce, offering more volume for a small increase in price, which might be preferred for those needing a larger drink .
