RECOMMENDED ANALYTICAL METHODS

These lists of analytical methods do not preclude the use of proximate or other methods.
If the results are under dispute, however, a listed method should be used for the final
determination, if possible. The use of these methods for Customs purposes by private or
commercial laboratories does not constitute an accreditation of those laboratories or guarantee
of the validity of the results obtained. The accuracy of the results is dependent upon the
individual laboratory's ability to properly apply a particular method to goods within the scope of
that method.

Chapter 1 : International standards and methods

Introduction

The standards and methods which have been included in the tables set out below are
important internationally accepted analytical standards and methods. The correlation of these
standards and methods to specific HS classifications should provide an important tool to assist
Customs laboratories with the identification of products for the purposes of classification in the
Harmonized System.

The tables have been arranged as follows:

 The tables are arranged in column form. They follow the sequence of the Harmonized
System.

 The tables are divided into four columns entitled "HS References", "Reference No.", "Title of
Standard or Method" and "Remarks".

 The first column enumerates the main HS Sections, Chapters, headings and subheadings
related to the listed analytical standard or method.

 The second column consists of a listing of ISO and other reference numbers or designations
corresponding to the standards and methods listed in the third column.

 The third column lists ISO as well as AOAC, ASTM, BS, DIN and ICUMSA standards and
methods.

 The last column, entitled "Remarks", is intended briefly to indicate the use of the listed
analytical standard or method, if that information is not already apparent from the title of the
standard or method.

Finally, the limited number of analytical methods which are specifically mentioned in the
HS Nomenclature, the Explanatory Notes and the Compendium of Classification Opinions have
been reproduced in the appendices to the tables.

The listed methods (other than those specified in the HS publications) are suitable
methods for the determinations indicated; however, other methods may also be used at the
discretion of the laboratory.

The references to methods that have been withdrawn, but not yet replaced by new
methods, are marked as (withdrawn).
