Overview of Construction Engineering Management

Construction engineering management (CEM) refers to using critical thinking in technical and scientific fields to improve construction projects. CEM uses specific project management techniques to oversee all aspects of a project from planning through completion. Key responsibilities of a construction engineer include applying technical and scientific knowledge to infrastructure projects, combining elements of design and management, and providing supervision from start to finish to deliver projects on time and on budget. Construction engineers typically work on projects like buildings, drainage systems, highways, and more over the course of their career.

CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT

CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT (CEM)

CEM refers to the use of critical thinking in technical and scientific fields to improve a construction
project. This often involves designing and executing new solutions and faster processes that can help
overcome worksite obstacles and improve efficiency.
CEM uses specific project management techniques that oversee the planning, design, and the
construction of a project from start to finish.
CEM is applied throughout a project's lifespan—from the initial planning stages to construction labor
to project completion.
Construction engineers are key players that bridge elements of design and management to help push
construction projects over the finish line to their successful completion.

Over the course of their career, a construction engineer is likely to work on and oversee a broad range
of projects. This may include the design of drainage and sewage systems, building construction, or
even larger infrastructure projects like developing highways or railroads.
Others choose to focus on one particular type of construction and build a career around it.

MOST IMPORTANT ASPECTS TO CONTROL IN CONSTRUCTION

Construction Project Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, budgeting, and supervising projects
from the beginning to the end.
A. Time
B. Cost
C. Quality

GENERAL CONSTRUCTION PROCESS

A. Project Initiation – this is the crucial stage of the whole process, since it can indicate whether this project
is a good opportunity or not.
B. Planning Phase – the project planning stage where the team singles out all the work to be done. The main
priority, during this phase, is to plan time, costs and resources for the project.
C. Execution Phase – the construction management plan is put to work the plans made. As a rule, this phase
is divided into two main processes: the executing and the monitoring and controlling.
D. Closing Phase – the final stage of the project represents its official completion. The project manager is
evaluating what went well refers to any potential failures.
