Uniform Circular Motion (Tutorial)

This document provides 7 examples of problems involving uniform circular motion. The problems involve calculating acceleration, speed, tension, and other variables for objects moving in circular paths with constant speed, such as on carnival rides, fans, and Ferris wheels. Key concepts covered include centripetal acceleration, the relationship between speed, radius, and period of circular motion, and the forces required to maintain circular paths.

TUTORIAL 4: UNIFORM CIRCULAR MOTION

1) In a carnival ride, the passengers travel at constant speed in a circle of radius 5.0
m. They make one complete circle in 4.0 s. What is their acceleration (ans..12.34
m/s2)

2) A rotating fan completes 1200 revolutions every minute. Consider the tip of a
blade, at a radius of 0.15 m. (a) Through what distance does the tip move in one
revolution.(ans..0.94 m) (b) what are the tip’s speed. (ans..18.85 m/s).(c) The
magnitude of its acceleration.(ans..2366.3 m/s2) (d) What is the period of the
motion.(ans..0.05 s)

3) In a 1901 circus performance, Allo “ Dare Devil” Diavolo introduced the stunt of
riding a bicycle in a loop-the-loop. Assuming that the loop is a circle with radius R
= 2.7 m, what is the least speed v Diavolo could have at the top of the loop to
remain in contact with it there? (ans. .5.14 m/s)[Hint; At top of the circle, FN = 0
N].

4) A passenger on a carnival Ferris wheel moves in a vertical circle of radius R with

the constant speed v. Assuming that the seat remains upright during the motion,
derive expressions for the force the seat exerts on the passenger at the top of
the circle and at the bottom.(ans.

5) An object of mass 100 g is tied to a string of length 1.00 m and is made to travel
in a horizontal circle. If the objects through 5 rounds per second, determine the
tension in the string.(ans..99N)

6) A pail, which contains water, travels in a vertical circle of radius 1.0 m. Determine
the linear speed which the pail must have when it reaches the highest point of
the circle so that the water does not spill out. (ans..3.1 m/s)[Hint: At the highest
point, FT = 0N]
7) A Ferris wheel with radius 14.0 m is turning vertically. At given instant, a
passenger on the rim of the wheel and passing through the lowest point of his
circular motion is moving at 3.00 m/s.
a) Find the magnitude and the direction of the passenger’s acceleration at this
instant.(ans..0.643 m/s2, upward)
b) Sketch the Ferris wheel and passenger showing his velocity and acceleration
vectors.
