Belonging to a business oriented client who cherishes his cultural
background, allowed total freedom to the architect right from
selecting the site, to creating a beautiful living experience. It’s a
corner plot spanning across 5,000 sq ft, and has a frontage from
the North and East directions.

Garden along the entry
The client needed a home that had good light and ventilation and followed vaastu
shastra. In terms of spatial needed, they wanted a 5BHK home with huge living areas.
With this, for entertainment and varied activities, they wanted a garden, a pool, a media
room, a reading space and a bar area. The design approach evolved as a blend of Indian
elements moulded in a contemporary structure that gave a homely feeling.

Living beside pooja
The careful planning started from the moment set backs were allotted and the remaining
plot was divided in half with dedicated zones. The public zone include living, dining,
sitting and pooja, while the private zone had bedrooms. A beautiful garden honors the
existing tree by designing a garden around it. Colourful bird houses hanging from the
tree define the warm gesture of sharing a home with birds.

View of open floor plan
A pooja space in the entry placed in the North-East, spreads positive aura across
the house. A hand-made wooden framed collapsible partition highlights Indian
craftsmanship. The house follows an open floor layout as the client’s host religious
gatherings. The furniture in subtle colours with bright inserts and pops, helps in
segregating the spaces.

Sitting under the skylight
The formal living is designed to give an elegant and classic look. A special attention is
paid to bring out the Indian cultural charm through intricate details in wood, the wall
frames highlighted by Indian fabrics and patterns, and a hand woven carpet behind the
console. The flooring is done in the Indian river finish slate stone that adds to the vibe.
The door of the formal living features a hand painted Mandana on glass.

View of the living and open to sky sitting
Resonating to a courtyard experience, a sitting space is placed right underneath a
double height volume. Client’s old furniture is used here by adding some retouches
in colour and upholstery. A Mosambi tree in this space adds the element of nature. A
connection between the pool and the sitting is created through the slits and openings
on the exposed concrete wall.

Dining
The kitchen and dining have a muted colour palette. The kitchen door inspired from
Rajasthani art and, the tiles are hand-made. The hand-painted ceiling above the dining,
gives the space a closure. The master bedroom shares a private garden and is kept
classic, clean and functional. The daughter’s bedroom is tailored as per her taste. An
Alanga stone wall is painted in white to make the space feel bigger and spacious.

The staircase sits beautifully between the Alanga stone wall and an exposed concrete
wall with hand-painted lotus and is finished in wood. The entire palette really defines the
theme of the area. The son’s bedroom reflects his interest and love for writing. A poem
written by him is embossed on the head board that becomes a source of inspiration. Both
the guest rooms follow the same design philosophy with calm and soothing elements
that pleases the presence and additional tones of fabric.

The reading room is inspired by English study spaces that are cladded in wood and give
a sense of privacy and undisturbed space. The reading area also has an inward looking
balcony to the living area that connects the spaces internally. The client wanted sporty
look for their bar and media area. A rustic look is given to the ceiling with wooden rafters.
The acoustic wall is treated with fabric in brass framing. The bar area is adjacent to the
media room and sits under the skylight, and is placed smartly under the stairs.

Overall the material palette for the exterior was textured paint, exposed concrete wall
and Alanga stone, which all together complemented each other. The green elements
added a soothing factor making the space really alive and to be called as home.
