1. The level of efficiency of Joy dishwashing liquid detergent is compared with the level of
efficiency of Axion dishwashing liquid detergent. To test which of the two detergents is
more efficient it was used by two groups of consumers. Joy was used by 15 consumers and
the average level of efficiency is 80 with a standard deviation of 10, while Axion was used

by 12 consumers and the average level of efficiency is 90 with a standard deviation of 5.
Test the null hypothesis using 0.01 level of significance. (10 points)
(Hint: The critical value of t = 2.787 and follow closely the Illustrative Example in the
Statistics with Probability book of Sumera-Icutan, et al. Pages 132-133.)
Solution:
Step 1 : H0: μ1 = μ2
H1: μ2 ≠ μ2 (two-tailed) (1 point)
Step 2: The level of significance is specified in the problem. We have to use α = 0.01
(1 point)
Step 3: Using df = n1 + n2 − 2 = 15 + 12 − 2 = 25 and a = 0.01, Appendix B shows
that the critical value of t = 2.787 should be used. (1 point)
Step 4: (5 points)
Hence, t computed = -3.15
Step 5: (2 points)

Decision: Since the absolute value of t computed = 3.15 is greater than the
critical value of t =2.787 then we have to reject H0. This imposes that there is a
significant difference between the level of efficiency of Joy and Axion dishwashing
liquid detergents.
2. Determine if there exist significant differences in the level of work performance of the
workers rated from 1-5 when they are grouped according to their profile variable civil
status using 0.05 level of significance by first completing the table below. (Hint: The
critical value of f = 3.89 and follow closely the Illustrative Example in the Statistics with
Probability book of Sumera-Icutan, et al. Pages 187-188.)
Solution:
Step 1: H0: μ1 = μ2 = μ3
H1: At least two of the means are not equal. (1 point)
Step 2: The level of significance is specified at 0.05. (1 point)
Step 3: The critical value of f = 3.89 where the numerator df = k − 1 = 3 − 1 = 2 and
the denominator df = k(n − 1) = 3(5 − 1) = 3(4) = 12. (1 point)
Step 4: Computations: (5 points)

Step 5: Decision: (2 points)
Since the computed f-value is less than the critical f value then we accept H0.
This means that there’s no significant differences in the level of work
performance of the workers.

3. Determine the relationship between the final grade in Statistics and final grade in
Research of 10 graduate students by first completing the table below:
(Hint: The critical value of t = 2.228 and follow closely the Illustrative Example in

Answer Key for Midterm Problem Set
Mathematics in the Modern World
2nd Semester S.Y. 2021-2022
Step 1: (1 point)
H0: There is no significant relationship between the final grade of students in
Statistics and Research.
Ha: There is a significant relationship between the final grade of students in
Statistics and Research.
Step 2: Set a = 0.05 (1 point)
df = n – 2 = 12 – 2 = 10
Step 3: Using a = 0.05, employing a two-tailed test and a df = 10, locate the tabular
value of t. Hence, we have ttab = 2.228 (1 point)
Step 4: Compute for the value of the t-statistic: (3 points)
Step 5: Decision: Since tcomp is greater than ttab, i.e., 6.94 > 2.228, therefore reject
H0. A students’ final grade in statistics is significantly related to his final
grade in research. (2 points)
