GRAMMAR: The present perfect.


TEACHING OBJECTIVES: BOOSTING WRITING SKILLS AND ACCURACY
At the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
-Write accurately sentences in present continuous tense.
ANIMATION STRATEGIES: INDIVIDUAL, GROUP AND PAIRS WORK.
TEACHING MATERIALS: chalk, black board, duster, books, handouts
LESSON DELIVERY: Activities
Activity 1: forms

Structure: build one sentence with the following structures.


A. The affirmative form:
Structure: Subject + have/has + Past Participle of the Verb + Object.

Eg: The students have gone to school. (Les élèves sont allés à l’école).

B. The negative form


Structure: Subject + have/ has + not + Past Participle of the Verb + Object.

Eg: The students have not gone to school. (Les élèves ne sont pas allés à l’école).

C. The interrogative form


Structure: Have/ has + Subject + Past Participle of the Verb + Object?

Eg: Have the students gone to school? (Les élèves sont-ils allés à l’école ?).

Activity 2: the Use


Structure: cite with examples the main uses of the present perfect.

We use this tense to:

1. Express an which starts in the past and continuous in the present.

Eg: Is Sali there? No, she has gone out. (= she is out now).

2. We can use the present perfect simple with just, already and yet.
Just = a short time ago

Eg: They have just arrived from Bamako.

Already = something happened sooner than expected:

Eg: what time is Dramane leaving? He has already left.

Yet = until now (speaker is expecting something). It is always use in question or negative form.

Eg: I’ve written the email, but I haven’t sent it yet.

Eg: Has it stopped raining yet?

Note the difference between gone (to) and been (to).

Eg: Mami is on holiday. She has gone to Italy. (= she is there now or on his way there)

Eg: Mami is back home now. She has been to Italy. (= she has now come back)

3. We use since and for in present perfect.


Since = The beginning of the action is known.

Eg: We have studied English since 2019.

For = Duration is known.

Eg: we have studied English for four (4) years.

4. We use present perfect to talk about life experience.


Eg: How long have you been teaching English?

Time expressions: recently, in the last few days, since breakfast, still, lately, so far etc…
Evaluation
1. ……….…. a lot of money (he/ steal).
2. ………… the child who disappeared (they/ find).
3. ……….. my keys (I/ lose).
4. ……… her the plans yet (we/ not/ show).
5. ………… the shopping? (you/ do).
6. ……….. about changing her job? (she/ think).
7. The post ………. (not/ come).
8. ………… breakfast? (you/ have).
