Malta as a place to learn English

The island of Malta is one of the very few truly bilingual countries in the world. It was ruled by Britain for 164 years and became an independent nation in 1964. English became compulsory in schools in 1882 and in 1936 it was adopted as one of its two Official Languages. Located 93 Km south of Sicily, right at the heart of the Mediterranean, the climate in Malta is unrivalled. The weather is warm and pleasant throughout the year. In fact, in January 2011, Malta was voted as the place with the best climate on Earth by International Living Magazine. Nearly all shops and advertising in Malta use English to display and sell their goods a good indication of the general use of the English Language here. All road signs are also in English and driving is on the left as in the U.K.

Malta has become a hub for international business.

St. Julians in particular is fast becoming the new financial centre of Europe. More and more banking and insurance companies are opting for Malta as a place to operate from. For example, FIMBank who are moving their headquarters here, are just one example. Here is a quote from them: The decision to base the FIMBank operations in Malta was the result of a study commissioned by the initial group of investors behind the Bank back in 1994. The scope of this study was to establish an onshore, specialised trade finance bank in a country that has a good regulatory framework, a respected tradition in banking and professional services and an efficient cost base. The availability of qualified multi-lingual staff was another determining factor and Malta was the obvious choice out of the other locations that were being considered at the time.

That really says it all!

Social and nightlife St. Julians is Malta's main coastal town and the heartland for shopping and entertainment. The bay is lined with bougainvillea-clad cafs, restaurants, casinos and a yacht marina. Paceville in St. Julians offers a vibrant nightlife to suit all tastes, from the latest in club DJ music to quieter piano bars and jazz clubs. There is also a shopping mall, a 17 screen cinema complex and bowling alley. Relax Lounge in the sun around the pool or head to one of Maltas beaches or rocky inlets and coves. It then depends on what course you have booked whether you will placed in a class of six or 12 students and whether you will be attending in the morning only or both morning and afternoon. Whatever your course, General, Business or Medical English you will be well looked after.

Accommodation School Apartments

You can book a room, or even a bed in a shared room, in one of Elanguests own self-catering apartments. This can give you an excellent opportunity to learn about every-day living in an English speaking country together with other international students.

The apartments have a well equipped kitchen, lounge, TV, washing machine and one or two bathrooms, depending on the size of the apartments. The common areas are cleaned once a week and bed linen, which is provided by the school, is changed on a weekly basis. The apartments are within walking distance of the school and a good alternative to staying in a hotel.

Host Families
If you want to be in a home situation, the school can organize accommodation for you with a host family. Staying in a host family is not just for young teenagers. Our families are carefully selected and often work with us because we send them older students. In turn, we also choose them for the same reason. You will be given breakfast and an evening meal (half-board) and you can book either single or a shared twin room. The majority of our families have been with us for many years and are all within easy reach of the school.
