All Personnel have read and understood this method statement and risk assessment prior to
accessing site. Part-time staff will be supervised while on site at all times.

Defined Safe Method of Work

1. Positioning of vehicle to be untouched, so as not to cause danger to other parties.

2. Carry framework/canvas into position.
3. Check that walkways are not obstructed so as injury is not caused to staff or public.
4. Check for underground services before staking is commenced, so as not to cause injury to
personnel or damage to electric, gas or water services.
5. In connecting structure work in teams of two or more persons to avoid injury due to over
lifting.
6. Before lifting structure make sure site is clear of obstacles to avoid tripping while lifting, also
other parties who will not have safety equipment or will not be fully aware of this Method
Statement and all other relevant Risk Assessments.
7. Supervisor to be aware of all parties on site up until the Marquee is completed and handed
over.

Work must only be carried out if all parties involved are competent and weather conditions are
correct.

 Risk Assessment Summary

Significant Risk - Back strain injury, foot injury.

Documents, Procedures etc. General company policy on Manual Handling
Information Operatives are supervised and advised of a wide range of risks which
will arise while unloading/loading.
Training Operatives have been trained and use forklift vehicles when lifting
heavy items on and off lorries.
Supervision Constantly reminding operative of the need to use aids and lifts
correctly without bending the back.
Access good Poor access arrangements may impose additional problems on
Manual Handling, to be reviewed by supervisors/crew leaders at
each site.
Environment Good light, firm footing and good weather conditions are required to
minimise risk of injury.
Emergencies Standard site first aid and evacuation, accident reporting and
investigation
Communications N/A

PPE Back supports may be worn to aid personnel, but does not warrant
increasing the weight an operative can personally lift.

2. Step Ladders/Mobile Towers:

Significant Risks – Falling

Information Operatives advised of risks while working at height.
Instruction Operatives are required to inspect steps/mobile towers before
commencing work at height.
Training constantly safely Operatives are supervised and advised on a regular basis, supervised
and reminded until supervisor sees fit to work.
Supervision Operatives are reminded of the safe working practise while working
at height, checking steps are sound and in good working order.
Access Ensure access to working area is easily achieved; operatives must be
able to work safely without the need to ‘over reach’ which may
unbalance the user. Consider using another member of staff to hold
the ladder if in any doubt.
Environment Good light, solid ground, properly maintained steps/mobile towers
are required to minimise risk of injury.
Emergencies Supervisor would take necessary action in event of an accident and
advise correct actions to be taken – emergency services/place of work
supervisor/Zest Marquees.
Communications If there is any danger to the operative or to his/her co-operatives, you
must make clear instructions to communicate as not to inflict further
injury. If there is a casualty, emergency services must be contacted (if
thought necessary) and the place of work (if appropriate) and Zest
Marquees.

PPE Safety harnesses may be required when working at a great height,
also assistance should be given by colleagues to minimise chance of
injury.

Other Procedures Step ladders to be checked daily before work commences, mobile
towers should be erected and checked before work starts.

3. Use of hand tools and drills

Significant Risks - Foot and Hand Injury

Information Operatives advised of risks arising from a wide variety of tasks to be
carried out on site.
Training Operatives are advised by supervisors where necessary, but only a
limited amount of tools are needed in the installation of a marquee.
Supervision Supervision is given whenever required.
Access Area must be clear of obstructions and checked for underground
services before work commences with tools such as drills and
wackers.
Environment Operatives must be competent and aware at all times, checking for
hazards and obstructions.
Communications N/A
COSHH N/A
PPE Safety glasses should be worn when using skill saws.
Other Procedures Plans of site to be checked where possible so as to determine any
electric, water or sewage services are not damaged while anchoring
structure.
Competent Persons Specialist contractors may be hired at times to scan for such services
(see above).

4. Rigging and Lifting

Significant Risks - Personal Injury

CONTROL ITEM Details of Control Measures

Documents, procedures etc. Company policy, all work must be carried out in a safe manner,
operatives must work as a team to prevent injury to themselves or a
colleague.
Information Information should be given by one person, clearly and precisely so
that all the team understands, therefore minimising the risk of
damage or injury.
Training Work to be carried out by competent persons.
Supervision All part-time staff to be supervised at all times by a supervisor until
training by such persons has been completed.
Access Good access to the site is essential, site should be clear of obstructions
and most of all unauthorised persons.
Environment No special requirement except in extreme winds, supervisor has final
authority and will only proceed if he sees fit to do so.

Emergencies Standard First Aid procedures, accident reporting and investigating.
Communications Communication between supervisor and crew is essential while
marquee is being erected.

PPE Hard Hats are to be worn at all times during construction of marquee.
Other procedures Crews on site for rig and de-rig must be sufficient in numbers to carry
out the task safely and with minimal risk to all.

5. Fork Lift Trucks

Significant Risks - Fatality

CONTROL ITEM Details of Control Measures

Documents, procedures etc. All drivers must hold a full licence obtained only by a driver training
specialist.
Information Operatives advised of risks arising from a wide range of tasks and
terrain’s.
Instructions Operators are expected to follow all safety guidelines instructed i.e.
no speeding, no passengers, no game play, while vehicle is under their
supervision.

Training Only drivers who have passed a test recommended by the J.C.I.T.B.
may be allowed to operate any such machine.

Supervision Supervision is not necessary as all drivers must hold a licence set by
British Standards before operating any such machinery.

Access All areas are to be kept clean and tidy, aisle are to be free of
obstructions i.e. boxes pallets etc. racking should be bolted to floor
and not overloaded.

Equipment All lift trucks are to be services by a certified company on a regular

basis, all services, workings and defects are to be reported and logged.

Emergencies Minor injuries to be attended by a designated First Aider. Major injury

to be dealt by emergency services. Standard accident reporting and
investigating to be carried out.

Other procedures Essential that all operatives know not to carry other parties on
vehicles unless a separate safety seat is provided. Prior to using
vehicle daily observation checks must be carried out, any
damage/defects to be logged and dealt with immediately.

Competent persons All repairs and services are to be carried out by qualified persons and
dealt with as soon as a problem is identified.
