Self practice / Assignment #1

● Go to p.115 in the textbook and complete activities (a) to (g) individually.

● Then, submit an MS Word file with the "post for the site" you must have written in
activity (f) and checked in activity (g).

FOR AND AGAINST

a) Read a post about adventure

sports on a blog site called For
and Against? Do you think
there are more advantages or
more disadvantages?

I think there are more disadvantages

than advantages because, although it
is true that extreme sports give you
that feeling of happiness and
adrenaline that many people like,
there are many more fatal
consequences and possible serious
injuries. Besides, these sports are
very expensive and not everyone is
capable of doing them. I don't think
it's worth trying, given the
disadvantages.

b) Read the blog post again and

complete it with the linking
expressions from the list (two
of them are interchangeable).

1.- The main advantage

2.- For example
3.- Another advantage
4.- In addition
5.- On the other hand
6.- Although
7.- for example
8.- Because of
9.- To sum up
10.- Furthermore

Useful language chart below.

d) You are going to write a post for the site.

Choose one of the titles below.

Going to work abroad: an exciting

opportunity or a scary one?

Being a celebrity: a dream or a

nightmare?

e) Plan the content.

1. Decide what you could say either about how many young people
today choose or are forced to go and work abroad, or about how
people today are interested in famous people or want to be famous
themselves. This will give you material for the introduction.

Many people have ever wanted to be famous or are very fans of one of these people such as
actors, singers, etc. Many people leave it as a dream that they do not want to fulfill. And
other people really have the goal of being a celebrity. On the other hand, there are people
who greatly admire a particular individual.

2. List two or three advantages and disadvantages, and number them

in order of importance.

Advantages: 1 The money. 2 The fact of being known by all. 3. Knowing other famous
persons.

Disadvantages: 1 Not having a private life and everything you do can be criticized. 2 The
pressure of the fans and haters. 3 You may be alone.

3. Decide if you think there are more advantages than disadvantages.

Although it seems that there are more disadvantages if you are strong-minded, all these
disadvantages may be much less than the advantages you have. You can learn to live a good
life even if it is stressful at times.

f) Write 120-180 words, organized in four paragraphs:

introduction, advantages, disadvantages (or disadvantages then advantages),
and conclusion. Use a formal style (no contractions or colloquial expressions).
Use the linking expressions in Useful language.

Being a celebrity: a dream or a nightmare?

Many people have ever wanted to be famous or are very fans of one of these people such as
actors, singers, etc. Some people leave it as a dream that they do not want to fulfill, and
others really have the goal of being a celebrity. On the other hand, there are people who
greatly admire a particular individual. But it can lead to an insane obsession that often hurts
the celebrity.

The main advantage could be the money you can earn, you could be very rich. Another
advantage is the fact of being known by all kinds of people. In addition you could get to know
other celebrities.

However, there are other disadvantages, for example not having a private life because of the
paparazzis, and everything you do can be criticized. To sum up you would also have the
pressure of the fans (that you don't want to disappoint) and haters. Because of these
situations you may feel very alone.

In conclusion, although it seems that there are more disadvantages if you are strong-minded,
all these disadvantages may be much less than the advantages you have. You can learn to live
a good life even if it is stressful at times.

g) Check for mistakes (grammar, punctuation, and spelling).

Paula Expósito García - 2ª de Humanidades

I think I used the proposed grammar and vocabulary correctly. The punctuation seems
adequate to me, with the 4 paragraphs indicated. I hope there won't be any mistakes that I
haven't seen.

According to Paula Expósito García, mindset plays a crucial role in overcoming challenges associated with celebrity status. She suggests that a strong-minded individual can diminish the impact of disadvantages such as invasion of privacy and public criticism. The ability to mentally fortify oneself allows the individual to focus on the positive aspects like wealth and connections, thereby learning to live a fulfilling, albeit stressful, life .

Paula Expósito García suggests using linking expressions to structure arguments clearly when discussing controversial topics. She highlights organizing content into paragraphs with a clear introduction, presentation of advantages and disadvantages, and a conclusion. Using expressions such as 'for example,' 'on the other hand,' and 'to sum up' helps in forming cohesive and persuasive arguments .

Paula Expósito García evaluates the life of celebrities by weighing advantages like fame and wealth against disadvantages such as loss of privacy, criticism, and pressure from fans and haters. She concludes that while there appear to be more disadvantages, a strong-minded person can mitigate these downsides and lead a rewarding life. The crux of her evaluation is the importance of resilience in dealing with stress and isolation .

García proposes listing and numbering advantages and disadvantages in order of importance as a method for evaluating their relative significance in controversial topics. This structured approach aids in forming a balanced view and determining which outweighs the other. Such an evaluation involves considering both immediate impacts and long-term consequences .

García contrasts the dream of becoming a celebrity with its reality by highlighting the allure of wealth and fame against the harsh reality of privacy invasion and societal pressure. She notes that while some individuals aspire to fame as a dream, its reality involves significant obstacles like scrutiny and isolation, which can be detrimental unless one is mentally prepared to handle them .

García implies significant psychological impacts from the disadvantages of fame, such as the stress from constant public scrutiny, and the pressure exerted by fans and detractors. These factors can lead to feelings of isolation and vulnerability, affecting mental well-being. The assertion that resilience can mitigate these effects highlights the critical role of psychological strength in maintaining stability and coping with fame's pressures .

García's work infers that public perception significantly shapes celebrity experiences by dictating how privacy invasions and societal expectations affect them. The pressure to maintain a public image and the fear of backlash for perceived missteps highlight the pervasive influence of public opinion. This reflects a broader commentary on how societal narratives and values impact individual experiences within public domains like celebrity .

Paula Expósito García identifies several disadvantages of participating in extreme sports, including the potential for serious injuries and the expensive nature of these sports, which makes them inaccessible for everyone. She emphasizes the higher risks and costs involved outweigh the benefits of the adrenaline rush and happiness that such sports might bring .

She highlights their role in guiding readers through logical arguments and structuring content effectively. Expressions such as 'in addition,' 'for example,' and 'to sum up' help in clarifying points and ensuring that arguments are logically sequential and impactful .

García's discussion reflects societal views by juxtaposing the glamorized perception of fame with the darker societal consequences of public exposure, such as loss of privacy and constant scrutiny. This mirrors society's recognition of these issues, where admiration of celebrities often coexists with awareness of the harsh realities they face. It highlights a common societal tension between the allure of celebrity status and its real-world challenges .
