Linguistic Mediation in Language Learning

Linguistic mediation involves facilitating communication between parties who do not share a common language or level of understanding. It can be monolingual, involving the same language, or bilingual, across languages. The Common European Framework of Reference describes mediation as oral or written tasks such as translation, interpretation, paraphrasing, summarizing, and note-taking. For the Pruebas de Certificación in Valencia, only English monolingual mediation will be assessed, excluding translation. Criteria include relaying and summarizing information, using mediation strategies, socio-linguistic competence, coherence, and linguistic competence. Both oral and written mediation tasks are described.

MEDIATION

Linguistic mediation is a type of interaction that takes place among people

that are unable to communicate, when speakers do not speak the same language,
or when speakers do speak the same language, but one of them has wider or
more specific knowledge of the common language, or simply has access to certain
information that the other one doesn’t. In other words, linguistic mediation is any
communicative activity in which an intermediary is needed to transform a linguistic
input A into a linguistic output B, as without the intervention of a mediator, the possible
recipients of the input wouldn’t be able to understand it.
Mediation tasks can be monolingual (intralinguistic mediation) or bilingual
(cross-linguistic or interlinguistic mediation).
The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) states that linguistic
mediation activities take up an important place in our societies, and describes
mediation activities as either oral or written, specifying different tasks that can be
developed as mediation practice, such as translation, interpretation, paraphrasing,
summarizing and note-taking (CEFR 2002: 14-15).

Having said that, we will have to take into account how mediation is going to
be assessed in the Pruebas de Certificación in the Valencian Community. It is going
to be monolingual (English-English), and therefore, translation won’t be included as a
mediation skill.

The criteria we are going to assess in the PUC are the following:

MEDIATING COMPETENCE:
 Relaying information. Selecting the relevant information for the task.
 Use of mediation strategies: Summarising, synthesising, adapting and clarifying.
SOCIO-LINGUISTIC & PRAGMATIC COMPETENCE:
 Adequacy to the context, addressee and task required. Apropriate register.
 Coherence and cohesion. Clear and organized development of ideas.
Connectors used effectively.
LINGUISTIC COMPETENCE:
 Accurate and wide range of vocabulary and structures.
Phonological / Spelling control.
MEDIATION STRATEGIES

 SIMPLIFYING A TEXT (to make it more accessible and easier to understand) by:

o Amplifying it. If the text is too dense, we need to expand on it to

simplify it by:
- giving examples
- adding explanations (clarifying and adapting cultural references)

o Streamlining it.
If the text is too long, we need to distill the main ideas by:
- Detecting relevant information (summarising)
- Highlighting key aspects
- Leaving out repetition (synthesising)
If we need to help someone select among several options, we can
do fulfil it by:
- Comparing
- Contrasting
- Drawing conclusions

 EXPLAINING NEW CONCEPTS:

o Linking to previous knowledge
o Adapting the language (rephrasing)
o Breaking down complicated information

Mediation microskills:
- Summarising
- Synthesising
- Rephrasing
- Clarifying
- Adapting the language or the cultural references
- Translating / Interpreting
- Negotiating sense and intention
