Needles and Notions


US no.2 DPN

Gauge
7 sts=1” in stockinette stitch

Size
Medium Adult
Buttonjar’s Favorite Basic Sock
Divide sts for heel.
Knit 30 sts on needle #1. Slip 15 sts on needle #2 & #3.
Glossary: These 2 needles will act as holders while the heel flap is
being knit back and forth.
K=knit
Work back and forth on needle #1 as follows:
P=Purl
Row 1: WS, Slip 1, purl across row.
RS=right side Row 2: RS, Slip 1, knit across row.
WS=wrong side Work rows 1 & 2 for 32 rows ending with a knit row.
SSK= 1 st decrease Turn Heel.
K2tog= 1 st decrease Row 1: Purl 17 sts, P2tog, P1, turn work to other side
Rnd=round (these are short rows, not all sts will be worked)
St(s)= stitch(es) Row 2: Slip 1, K5, SSK, K1, turn work to other side.
PU= pick and knit Row 3: Slip 1, P to one sts before the gap, P 2tog closing
the gap, purl 1, turn
Instructions Row 4: Slip 1, K to one sts before the gap, SSK, K1, turn.
Repeat rows 3 & 4 until 18 sts remain, ending with a knit
Cast on 60 sts using long tail method. Divide sts
row.
evenly over 3 needles, join in round being careful
Gusset:
not to twist sts.
With a spare needle PU and knit 16 sts up side of heel
Work *K2, P2* ribbing for 7” or desired length
using the slipped st edge.
(approximately 80 rounds)
Combine the instep sts on needles 2 & 3 by slipping the sts
If using 2 colors, cut yarn and add new color for
onto 1 needle. Using a spare needle knit across these 30
heel and foot here.

With another needle, PU and knit 16 sts down the other
side of the heel. On this same needle K 9 sts from the first
needle holding the 18 heel sts.
Slip the remaining 9 sts from the heel needle onto the first
“PU” needle.
80 sts on 3 needles.
Needle 1: 25 sts up one side of heel.
Needle 2: 30 instep sts.
Needle 3: 25 sts down other side of heel. Center back of
heel is beginning of round.
Knit one round.
Begin decrease for Gusset:
Needle 1: Knit until 3 sts remain, K2tog, K1. Needle 2:
Knit all sts.
Needle 3: K1, SSK, K to end of round
Continue to decrease every other row until original 60 sts
remain. Decreasing only on needles 1 and 3. Continue
knitting until sock measures 2” less than desired length.
Toe Shaping: Round 1:
Needle 1: K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1.
Needle 2: K1, SSK, knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1.
Needle 3: K1, SSK, knit to end of round.
Round 2: Knit
Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until 24 sts remain. Needle 1 & 3
have 6 sts Needle 2 has 12 sts.
Knit sts from needle 1 onto needle 3. Using Kitchner stitch,
graft remaining 24 sts.
