Self-leadership

Self-leadership describes about individualism. It means to set your own objectives, and following it and
correcting as it goes. According to Bryant and Kazan, it is usually the practice of practicing your personal
thinking, feeling and actions towards the objectives and goals. Self-leadership is one of the important in
the leadership development process. Where motivation is no longer required self-leadership plays a very
important role in that part. The leadership is widely recognized as the facilitation of behaviors that
produce good mentors and team leaders, as well as an overall practice of personal well-being and positive
psychology. Individuals who wants to be self-leaders need to have certain competencies such as self-
awareness, tolerance, adaptability, emotional resilience, self-reflection or assessment among others.

3.1 Importance and Objective of Self-Leadership

For being an effective leader, developing self-leadership skills is important because it hones an
individual’s own emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and self-management. The person will know the
ability to discern how their own emotions or personal biases may affect their decision making. For that,
they accurate recognize their own competencies and challenges to create a better plan for reaching desired
outcomes. It is important because it leads with more awareness and understanding to help make great
leaders who set an example for their team. But most importantly, it allows a leader to influence others to
act so that the goals of the organization are met. it helps them to achieve their own personal goals for their
life and career which also includes development of their own business or their organization. The main
objective of self-leadership is to is develop and manage individual energy to initiate, motivate and
perform at a high level, improving and sustaining organization's leadership philosophy at an individual
level.

3.2 Self-Leadership Model

To be an effective self-leader, individual needs to obtain these 4 developments in his personal


characteristics and skills. They are character strengths, abilities and talents, interest and aspirations and
environmental strength. It is described below: -

1. Character Strengths: It means the strength of the individual who can take or make their own
decisions for the development of the company and also themselves. The individual should not wait for
other’s opinion as he will have his own decision of the betterment of the organization. Then another part
of this characteristics is recovery. As we know everyone has ups and downs in their way of life. The main
thing is to get up and recovery from the damage which is already done and plan critically to overcome the
damage for the development of themselves and the organization they work for. Followers usually obey
these leaders for their character strength as they learn from their character.

2. Abilities and Talents: The individual should have the ability of psychological capital. They should
have the knowledge of the all common things and even some critical things which helps them to think for
the better and effective result for their development. Mindfulness is usually an approach where the
individual consciously cultivates their ability to be present, open-minded, and compassionate when
interacting with team members and the followers will show the same consideration to according to the
leader. Lastly, Job Crafting, where it is intended for self-initiated behavior that is aimed to mold and
shape the design of the job by own decision making for the development of the organization.

3. Interest and Aspiration: the of self-leadership should be powerfully visional, for the well of the
organization as well as the followers or subordinates. They always think for the better for them which
makes them a great effective leader. Then they have Authentic engagement with every work. They don’t
only work for their own goals but also they think about other teams strategic way to find solution and
develop their process.

4. Environmental Strengths: Then they have high quality connections with everyone inside the
organization as well as outside the organization so that the leader has good knowledge and aspiration for
the development and understand the competencies of their organization.

3.3 Self-Leadership Traits

An effective self-leader has many positive traits which describes about themselves. It is well liked by the
followers as they try to imitate it to be a self-leader themselves. The leadership traits are described below:
-

1. Self-Awareness: This self-awareness refers to understanding who they are, what is their goals are,
what their strengths are and areas where they can improve. An effective self-leader has a good
understanding of who they are as individuals and are able to identify what they want to accomplish for the
development of their organization and as well as themselves. Individuals who are self-aware can also
complete an accurate and objective self-assessment, which leads to self-confidence and development.
2. Motivation: it is the purpose which provides energy to push personal limits and continue to work when
challenges arise. Individuals who have strong self-leadership have a passion that drives them to overcome
any obstacle they may face.

3. Decision Making: to develop self-leadership good decision making is required. They know the ability
about strengths and weaknesses, and identify what they want to do and then they plan for success. It
needs the ability to proactively anticipate, challenges and then respond.

4. Dedication: It is important to developing effective self-leadership because it helps to stay motivated to


complete tasks and stay the course to overcome challenges when it arises.

5. Influence: it provides over others because the leader’s beliefs and actions inspire them to work harder
to achieve the same success as the leader has. The influence has on others encourages them to model
productive and helpful behavior.

6. Empathy: Empathy is often a skill that leaders need because it allows them to make genuine
connections with their subordinates. It allows to make a close connection to the feelings of others and
respond appropriately.

7. Social skills: Having strong social skills allows to build relationships with trust and respect. Every
leader needs social skills to effectively encourage their team to follow their lead and work together for the
purpose of creating high performing teams.

8. Self-Regulation: This skill help you respond to challenges rather than reacting to them. A reaction is
typically driven by emotion and a response is driven by logic or reasoning. Strengthening self-regulation
skills helps you ensure you respond to challenges in a positive and effective manner.

9. Accountability: It means not blaming someone else when something goes wrong and taking the action
needed to correct the issue. A responsible leader is accountable for the actions and behavior of both
themselves and their teams. This is an important skill of self-leadership that is directly connected to many
of the other self-leadership skills.

3.4 Advantage and Disadvantages of Self leadership

Advantages:

1. Makes more efficient and productive result

2. make better decisions and set priorities better


3. Inspires others to follow the leader.

4. Self-aware leaders are more effective across the board. They create more satisfied employees and more
successful companies

5. They make a solid foundation for personal and professional goals.

6. They create better result for their personal development.

Disadvantages:

1. Vision is linked to the leader rather than the company itself.

2. Heavy focus on the long-term vision may sometimes impact short-term goals.

3. Fixation on the leader's vision may cause the team to lose sight of creative and innovative ideas from
others.

4. May have some wrong decision making because of over confidence.

3.5 How to Achieve Organizational or Personal Success Through Self-Leadership

Self-leaders need to be able to manage and adapt to constant change throughout the business to achieve
sustainable results and cultivate continuous growth for themselves as well as for their organization. Self-
leadership doesn’t always think about the benefit of the own, but also creates a effective impact for any
organization as well. Many successful organizations are currently running by self-leaders. Such as Bill
Gates, who created Microsoft Corporation with his own thought and later it became the most successful
programming software worldwide.

Here are 5 self-leadership strategies that can translate into organizational success:

 Be Clear About Values: The way of leading is reflected in the relationships yo have with colleagues.
Set a clear personal mission statement and values that guide day to day decisions and are aligned with
what organizational goals, as well as your own goals. Encourage employees at every level of the
organization to do the same.

 Changing the Mindset: The Goals are fluid and evolving, just like the daily lives for that some plans
change unexpectedly and require adjustments to realign leadership strategies to meet the demands of
those changes. To Take 15 minutes every day engage your mindset, evaluating where you’re at in pursuit
of your goals, then have a simple plan that is both focused and flexible to work with the team and easy
pivot to meet the organization’s changing needs for development.

 Establish a Common Leadership Language: All plans require some consistency. If managers are
using a common set of leadership competencies, it should be clear to everyone in the organization as to
what is trying to be achieved through those competencies. It helps to be speaking the same language and
evaluating performance in the same way to have truly effective collaboration and build leadership skills at
every level of the organization.

 Plan Performance: Just as goals should naturally flow from the leader’s role in the organization, all of
his daily tasks and activities should contribute to those goals. Take charge of your schedule, time, and
daily leadership development plan. List and review key tasks and activities for planning to accomplish
that day and cross them out when it is completed. It should be making sure that it is being mapped of the
daily activities are aligned with the goals and improvement of the organization.

 Be Proactive. With clear roles, goals, and a plan to perform on a day to day basis, a leader should be
ready to react to anything that comes in their way during the day, while staying on track toward your
goals and the strategy of the organization. When challenges or setbacks occur, they don’t wait for others
to solve the problem, they use self-leadership skills to identify where they are at in progress toward the
goal, what has shifted, what the problems are, and plan how to solve them. This doesn’t mean that they
act in isolation, but that they prepared to act and ready to lead.

3.6 Great Self-Leaders

Elon Musk, Founder of Space X, and Tesla Motors, is a great self-leader as he is an is action-oriented
person. Instead of sitting around and philosophizing about how to change the world, he outlines and
execute a strategy with his employees by leading them and made vision reality.

Henry Ford, Founder of the Ford Motor Company, he had a hand in most major decisions at the
company and is said to have even monitored employee's activities outside of work.
