Defining Digital Learning in Education

Digital learning is outlined as web-based learning that uses technology to impart knowledge to students. There are two types of digital learning: live interactive classes and pre-recorded classes. The key advantages of digital learning are that students can study anywhere, face no time restrictions, learn at their own pace, access material from multiple sources easily, and get help from online tutors. All schools have adopted digital learning due to these benefits and because lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic required the widespread adoption of online education.

Defining Digital Learning

Digital learning will be outlined as web-based learning that effectively makes
use of the technology to impart knowledge to the students. This type of learning
had been introduced a couple of years ago and it possessed an amazing response
from all around the world. It facilitates learning at anyplace and anytime.
Through this method the teacher doesn't need to take the pain of writing on the
white board with chalks. The students are taught with the help of computer
screens, virtual books etc, which are beyond the conventional methods of
teaching.

Types of Digital Learning

 Live Interactive Classes

These are classes that occur in real time through live lectures, teaching

and Q and A sessions. These classes have a lot of interaction.

 Pre-Recorded Classes

These classes are those classes that are recorded before the actual class

and then streamed and posted. Though these classes do not have any

interaction they help every student to learn at his/her pace.

Key Advantages of Digital Learning

 Study Anywhere
Digital learning or e-education is not bounded with the traditional classroom-

type of teaching where every period is supposed to be of forty minutes but it has

given the freedom to both the students as well as the teachers as you can take

online classes anywhere according to your convenience including attending it at

the comfort of your home.

 No Restriction of Time
Another huge advantage that web-based learning has provided to the students

worldwide is that learning is no more restricted to specific timings of classes.

You can choose your own flexible time and start learning when you are free.

 Learn at your Own Pace

There is no need to compete with the rest of the class but rather e-learning

allows you to learn at your own pace. The tutorial videos are available online

and you can view it as many times as you want to make your concepts clear

about a topic. This means you do not have to spend much time on one lesson as

then the chapters become more interactive.

 Availability from Multiple Sources
Digitalized content means you get high-quality academic content which is easy

to read and understand. It is delivered through various technical tools such as

computers, laptops, smartphones, and other electronic gadgets. The content is

available in the form of live explanation by teachers, pre-recorded videos,

articles and other written content from various people in the internet.

 Ease of Access
The main technical tool behind digital learning and is also known as its

backbone is the internet. You just need a computer or any other gadget with an

internet connection to get started with e-learning process. However, it must be

remembered that the internet is just a medium or tool and not instruction.

 Online Tutors or Instructors

No teaching or learning can be considered complete without the presence of a

teacher and digital learning is no exception. It is only that their roles have

undergone some changes but the basic responsibility remains the same; to

educate digital learning students.

Why Did All Schools need to Adopt Digital Learning?

There has been a thorough discussion that all educational institutes and

academic centres should implement digital learning which steadfastly gained

immense popularity and support over the last few years. It is going to get more

assistance as the numbers of internet users are increasing each day. Another
important cause of this shift towards digital learning is the current scenario of

covid-19. Lockdowns due to Covid-19 have caused widespread adoption of

Digital learning.

Conclusion
The Digital Learning which was introduced only a few years ago has been

warmly welcomed by the world in the current scenario ff. A lot has been

achieved in this area but still, the journey is not a complete and long way to go.

The digital learning and teaching community, as well as the learners, can take

comprehensive advantage of the technology and can make their professional

more interesting thereby breaking the shackles of conventional teaching

methods. The modern-day education is to ascend many more steps further and

bring an enormous change in society.

The ease of access offered by digital learning can enhance global educational equity by making quality educational resources widely available, thus reducing geographical and logistical barriers to learning. However, achieving true equity depends on addressing challenges like disparities in internet access and technology affordability, which could otherwise widen the gap between different socioeconomic groups .

Digital learning allows students and educators to overcome traditional time and location constraints by enabling learning at any place and time. It detaches learning from fixed classroom periods and specific timings, providing flexibility and convenience. This implies a shift in educational dynamics, promoting individualized learning experiences and requiring educators to adapt to more digital-friendly teaching methods .

The availability of multiple digital sources significantly enhances the quality and accessibility of educational content. It allows learners to access a wide range of high-quality materials delivered through diverse formats like live explanations, pre-recorded videos, and written content. This variety optimizes understanding and accommodates different learning preferences, thereby increasing accessibility for students worldwide .

In digital learning, tutors or instructors transition from traditional teaching roles to facilitators and guides in virtual environments. They must adapt to new tools and platforms, focusing on creating engaging digital content and providing personalized support. The challenges include ensuring student engagement without physical presence, adapting lesson plans for digital formats, and mastering new digital literacy skills .

The main types of digital learning are live interactive classes and pre-recorded classes. Live interactive classes occur in real time, providing opportunities for immediate interaction through lectures and Q&A sessions. In contrast, pre-recorded classes lack interaction but offer flexibility, allowing students to learn at their own pace by watching the tutorials whenever they want .

Digital learning promotes individualized learning by allowing students to learn at their own pace and revisit materials—a stark contrast to traditional education, which follows a fixed pace. The flexibility to choose when and how to engage with content supports personalized learning paths, catering to individual needs, strengths, and challenges, thereby optimizing educational outcomes .

Technical tools and the internet serve as the backbone of digital learning by providing the necessary infrastructure to access and deliver educational content. While this reliance ensures vast access and distribution of resources, potential drawbacks include digital divide issues, where lack of internet access or technology can prevent equitable learning opportunities, and technological disruptions that can hinder learning continuity .

Since its introduction, digital learning has received widespread acceptance and positive feedback for its novelty and utility in modern education. This reception implies a progressive movement towards integrating digital avenues in educational methods, suggesting a future where digital tools complement and perhaps surpass traditional methods in creating more dynamic and adaptable learning experiences .

Digital learning has the potential to disrupt conventional teaching methods by shifting teaching towards more adaptive, technology-based practices. Educators need to prepare by enhancing their digital literacy, adopting innovative teaching approaches, and integrating digital resources into their curriculum. They also need to focus on developing skills for virtual engagement and assessment to effectively manage the transition .

The adoption of digital learning by schools is necessary to address challenges posed by global events like the COVID-19 pandemic. As physical classrooms became inaccessible during lockdowns, digital learning provided continuity in education, accommodating the increasing online presence of students. This shift is crucial for maintaining educational operations during crises and adapting to the evolving digital landscape .
