The time I found my favorite book


It was January 25, 2009, I was eight years old. I went to school that day and my teacher

of literature sent us a book to read for the next two weeks; the book is fiction and was

written for children; the book name was “Lágrimas de ángeles”. In the afternoon I told

my dad to buy me the book, and when he arrives to the house, he gives me it. I

remembered that the book cover was a five year old girl carrying a baby, with blue color

in the margins and it was little and with few pages. For my age that book was shocking,

but it was a reality that is usual in the streets of my country. That day I start reading it, I

turned the pages with my little hands while every paragraph I read I imagined it in my

mind. The beginning of the book was an introduction to the reality in the streets, with

minimum details and general ideas. I continue reading the book for the next 4 days; I

read four pages each day.

The days passed and I was at the climax of the book. My mom came into my room and

saw me crying, she was worried about me. She asks me: “What’s wrong? Are you

okay?”, I didn’t answer and just hugged her and kept crying. The reason why I was

crying is because in the middle of the book the information is more detailed. It

explained how children smelled glue so they wouldn’t feel hungry, I feel sad because

when they do that their body starts to decompose little by little starting from inside.

There are mafias that kidnap children and make them work without receiving food or

money and this mafia members stay with the money of the children and if a child does
not meet the sales limit, they mistreat him or her. These kids suffer a lot in the streets,

and it is hard to watch how their life can’t improve because of this mafias. In the book

the group of children live in an abandoned bus and it was a group of seven kids.

It was the second week after the teacher sent us the book and we were in class, my

teacher takes us a quiz about the book and when we finish, we start discussing it, my

classmates gave their opinion and they said that they don’t like the book because it was

controversial. Otherwise I gave my opinion and said: “I like this book and I think this is

one of my favorites until now because it shows us the reality that children live in the

streets and how mafias treat them, how they have to smell glue to do not feel hungry

and continue their ‘work’, how they are kidnapped and how the families use their

children to make people give them more money and use that money in more drugs

instead of using it for something that will help to their children in the future”. My

teacher was shocked on how that book change my mind and my point of view for

everything.

I think that this book should be read by everyone, no matter their age, because it makes

you realize the situation that children and families are suffering in the streets, since this

book my perspective change and when I see a kid in the street I always pray for him or

she to be safe.
