Kindly paste on this page a screenshot of the particular account or page that you chose as your
subject matter for analysis.
1. Why did you immediately suspect that this particular account is a peddler of fake or
distorted history?

VinCentiments was already known page back when I was still in high school. It is famous
for its ‘reality’ skits. Darryl Yap, a writer by training who has only recently branched out
into film directing, is the brains behind VinCentiments. Darryl, a 31-year-old artist from
Olongapo City, Zambales, founded SaWakas, an independent theater company that
would stage performances ranging from one-act plays to adaptations of films like Ricky
Lee's Himala. SaWakas is a collection of theater enthusiasts. The director claims that five
hours after posting ‘Jowable’ at 2 a.m., it had already received 1 million views. The
page's following, which was only 2,000 people the previous night, suddenly grew to
120,000.

The uncensored short stories in Vincentiments are renowned for being filled with intense
fury and injustice. Its biggest break is the VIVA-produced Jowable series, which has seen
enormous success in mainstream cinema. However, they travel a perilous and precarious
storytelling that only certain viewers glorify, even while it revels in the strong and
unapologetic truths that they claim to be the film's objective. They have always generated
controversy as a result. Slice-of-life and funny short films, which you either love or
detest, are a specialty of the production company VinCentiments. The next short film
takes things a step further, taking a darker, more nuanced approach to issues like potential
child rape and false charges that caused an accuser's story to fall apart. Another thing
about VinCentiments is that it is known for historical revisionism that did not really take
place and is biased to a certain party.
2. Kindly cite a portion of its content and explain why this post is a classic case of fake or
distorted history?

The reason why this certain content is posted as fake or distorted history is because the
film, Maid in Malacañang, was already a controversial because even if he was called out
for directing this film he continued to ignore these and said that this is his own experience
even if still wasn’t even alive when it took place. He was also called out for making up
things even if there are already scripts that states what really has happened during the
Marcos regime. Director-writer Darryl Yap received bashing for the scene in Maid in
Malacañang in which "Cory" was playing mahjong with the nuns after a phone
conversation. Actress Giselle Sanchez was finally revealed to be the one who played the
character of former President Cory Aquino. Get them out of the Philippines" and went
back to playing mahjong circulated on social media.

In response to calls for a boycott of the contentious film, "Maid in Malacañang " writer
and director Darryl Yap issued a statement. Screenshots from the film that showed actress
Giselle Santos as the late president Cory Aquino playing mahjong with three nuns
sparked a response from the Carmelite sisters.

The significance of creative freedom in historical filmmaking, as demonstrated by 'Maid in Malacañang,' lies in its ability to spark discussions about the boundaries of artistic interpretation. While the film generated significant controversy for depicting speculative scenarios without historical basis, it highlights the filmmaker's intention to engage audiences in unconventional perspectives. This creative choice can either challenge entrenched narratives or lead to accusations of historical distortion, underscoring the delicate balance filmmakers must navigate between artistic expression and responsibility to historical truth .

Darryl Yap's response to criticism for his film 'Maid in Malacañang,' where he maintains the validity of his portrayals as personal experience, suggests a motivation to assert creative freedom over historical fidelity. Despite backlash and calls for boycotts, his insistence on the authenticity of his narratives indicates a prioritization of artistic expression and impact over historical accuracy . Such a stance implies that Yap values the storytelling element and public reaction more than adherence to historical fact, a common practice in works aiming to provoke thought or challenge existing perceptions.

The portrayal of former President Cory Aquino playing mahjong with nuns in 'Maid in Malacañang' illustrates the challenges of representing historical figures by highlighting the potential for creative interpretations to lead to significant public backlash. Such representations, which stray from widely accepted historical accounts, can provoke anger among those who view them as misrepresentations of important historical legacies . This challenge reflects the broader issue of how cinematic portrayals can influence public perception, potentially distorting widely held understandings of these figures' roles and actions.

In 'Maid in Malacañang,' Darryl Yap portrays historical events through a highly subjective lens, which includes creating scenes such as former President Cory Aquino playing mahjong with nuns. Such portrayals sparked outrage because these dramatizations lack historical evidence and contradict established narratives of the events during the Marcos regime . Yap's insistence on presenting these portrayals as personal experiences despite not being alive at the time these events occurred further fueled controversy .

Controversy plays a central role in the popularity of VinCentiments’ productions by fueling public interest and debate, thereby driving viewership. The polarizing nature of their content, including historical inaccuracies and strong emotional themes, attracts attention from both supporters and detractors, increasing visibility and viewership . This strategic use of controversy not only garners a dedicated audience but also positions the production in cultural discourse, often resulting in higher engagement and commercial success.

VinCentiments' style, characterized by vivid and unapologetic storytelling, may significantly impact audiences' understanding by blurring the distinction between artistic dramatization and historical fact. While such storytelling techniques engage viewers emotionally and intellectually, they also pose the risk of conveying skewed or inaccurate versions of historical events, particularly if audiences accept these portrayals uncritically . This narrative approach can thus shape perceptions by embedding subjective interpretations within powerful storylines, potentially leading to distorted historical understanding if not counterbalanced by factual education.

VinCentiments employs a style centered on slice-of-life and comedic short films that resonate with or repel viewers through their raw, unfiltered depiction of reality. These films often delve into intense emotions and injustices, showcasing unapologetic truths as perceived by the creators. This polarizing approach results in audiences either deeply connecting with or rejecting the content due to its provocative nature .

VinCentiments' productions, particularly due to their controversial storytelling and perceived historical inaccuracies, contribute to societal perceptions by blurring the lines between factual history and dramatized representation. For instance, 'Maid in Malacañang' influences perceptions by depicting historical figures and events in fictionalized scenarios, thereby inviting debate and scrutiny over what constitutes true historical narrative versus creative liberty . Such productions can distort public understanding, especially if audiences do not critically engage with the source material or seek out corroborating historical evidence.

Public reactions to 'Maid in Malacañang' reveal significant issues in media representation of historical events by underlining the tension between narrative dramatization and historical integrity. The controversy primarily arises from the liberties taken in portraying influential historical figures in speculative scenarios. Such portrayals challenge audiences to engage with the material critically, assessing its artistic merit against the backdrop of historical validity . The clash between adoration and disdain for the film exemplifies the broader societal debate over how history should be depicted in media, reflecting divergent views on the role of artistic interpretation versus factual recounting.

VinCentiments is known for incorporating elements of historical revisionism that are often biased towards a specific political party. The production's approach to storytelling, which includes provocative themes and intense narratives, tends to attract controversy . Specifically, the film 'Maid in Malacañang,' directed by Darryl Yap, was criticized for portraying historical events inaccurately, such as showing former President Cory Aquino engaging in activities that have no substantiated basis during a crucial historical period . This intention to portray personal experiences as historical facts lends to its reputation for promoting distorted historical narratives.
