Introduction

• Profibus has been established for many years as the field bus for machines and lines. In the 90s,
Ethernet spread into IT and industry. It merges the industrial experience of Profibus with the openness
and flexible options of Ethernet.

• Profinet (Process Field Network) is the open, cross-vendor "Industrial Ethernet Standard" by Profibus &
Profinet International (PI) for manufacturing and process automation.

• Profinet has a higher performance than Profibus.

• To prevent collisions, every node has an integrated switch that delays the messages (if required).

• Profinet is real-time capable.

5 |Sinergia_Engineering – [Hardware plan]

Protocol
• Profinet is based on Industrial Ethernet.
• Profinet uses TCP/IP and IT standards.
• Profinet allows a real-time communication based on Ethernet.
• Profinet enables a smooth integration of field bus systems.
• A network management protocol such as, SNMP, DCP, LLDP is used for diagnostics and configuration.
• The control system is accessed via the Profinet interface.

KRONES use: Profinet IO

• Profinet IO describes the entire data exchange between controllers (devices with so-called "master
functionality") and the devices (devices with so-called "slave functionality"), as well as parameter
settings and diagnostics.

• Profinet IO has been designed for the real-time (RT) and isochronous communication (IRT = Isochronous
Real-Time) with the distributed periphery.

• The designations RT and IRT merely describe the real-time properties for the communication within the
Profinet I/O.

Profinet options and subnetwork mask

Network component and terms

The Profinet IO controller is a controller which controls the automation tasks (usually the
Step7 CPU).

The Profinet IO device is a field device which is controlled by the IO controller, e.g.. an ET200S
or AS-i Profinet gateway.

The Profinet IO supervisor is a development tool typically based on a PC for setting

parameters and diagnosing the individual Profinet IO devices. (Simatic Manager)

The Profinet switch is a structural component that enables the transfer of Ethernet messages
using any topology

Profinet perspective and subnetwork mask

• Subnetwork mask
• The subnetwork mask is used by the node to allocate the network component
and the host component using the IP address.
• The subnetwork mask has the same structure as an IP address
(32 bits or 4 bytes). By definition, all bits of the "network component" must be
set to 1, all bits of the "host component" to 0.
• For the network classes, the subnetwork mask looks as the following:
Address class Subnetwork mask (decimal)
Class A [Link] (224 - 2 = 16777214)
Class B [Link] (216 - 2 = 65534)
Class C [Link] (28 - 2 = 254)

Profinet & Profibus

• Access method
• Profibus uses the so-called master-slave method, i.e. the Profibus master addresses
each individual slave.
• There is no master-slave method with Profinet.
• The Profinet controller sends its IO data to the Profinet device within the configured update time.
• The Profinet device sends its IO data to the Profinet controller within the configured update time.
• Sending is independent of the corresponding communication partner.

Profinet address assignment

The complete device address
comprises the following
components:

MAC address
Profinet name
IP address
Device number
12 |Sinergia_Engineering – [Hardware plan]

Profinet address assignment

• MAC/IP- address
• The MAC address is firmly assigned to the Profinet device.
• The MAC address (e.g., 00-E0-4B-13-3B-E7) is 6 bytes long and comprises 2 parts:
• The first half is the so-called manufacturer's ID (assigned by the IEEE).
• The second half is a consecutive number.
• The IP address is assigned automatically and used for diagnostics and IT functions.
• Device number (particularly for Siemens Profinet controller)
• The last digit of the IP address is used as a device number.
The Profinet controller always has the device number 0.

• Profinet name or device name

• The Profinet name is firmly assigned to the Profinet device.
• The Profinet name identifies the device.
• Relevant for Profinet is the name because the IP address is assigned automatically.
• The device name must be unique within the Profinet network.
13 |Sinergia_Engineering – [Hardware plan]

Profinet address assignment

• IP address
Every machine has its own Profinet network with an IP range from [Link] to
[Link]. Any IP range can be used for any
machine since the Profinet networks are physically separated from each other.
Gateway (router) if provided: [Link]
Provisions :
Profinet controller CPU: [Link]
Profinet devices: [Link] - [Link]
2 touch-screen interfaces (diagnostics) [Link] - [Link]
Diagnostics and programming devices: [Link] - [Link]
Subnetwork mask: 255 . 255 . 0 . 0

• Assign using programming device (hardware configuration).
• At KRONES, every Danfoss has already been assigned a specific name.

• Danfoss IP address
• The IP address is assigned automatically by the CPU.
• When the hardware configuration is loaded, the valid IP address is sent to the IO devices.
This assignment is made using the specific device name.

• Device number
• The device number of a Danfoss lies between 84 and 108 and is the last digit of its IP
address.

Requirements for automatic assignment when the device is replaced

• Please observe the port assignment.

• Assign the device name using the display or the topology.
• If the device already has a name, reset the name when replacing the device.
Afterward, a name will automatically be assigned to the device because of the
proximity relation. (The topology must be correct!)
• Once the device name has been received, the CPU will automatically transmit the
IP address.

Diagnostics of the monitoring LEDs and connections at the control cabinet

If required, the nodes should be checked visually in order to detect, e.g.,
faults that were not reported to the touch-screen or to eliminate faults that cannot
be eliminated via the touch-screen.
A check in the control cabinet includes both a check of the LEDs (AS-i master; it will
