Updated on 11 Oct 2022: Further to our media release on 8 Oct 2022, the Singapore
Food Agency (SFA) has extended the recall to include two additional Mie Sedaap
products from Indonesia due to the presence of ethylene oxide. SFA has directed
Indostop Singapore Pte Ltd to recall Mie Sedaap Kari Spesial Instant Cup Noodles
and Korean Spicy Chicken Instant Cup Noodles. The recall is ongoing. All implicated
Mie Sedaap products will be subject to SFA’s hold-and-test regime upon arrival in
Singapore until the issue has been rectified. This means that only consignments that
pass our laboratory testing will be allowed to be released for sale.
Through our regulatory testing, SFA has identified the chilli powder to be contaminated
with ethylene oxide. The manufacturer, PT Wings Surya, is working with importers to
withdraw Mie Sedaap instant noodle products with chilli powder from the retail market
and will also reformulate their product to rectify the cause of ethylene oxide
contamination.
Consumers who have purchased the implicated products are advised not to consume
it. Those who have consumed the implicated products and have concerns about their
health should seek medical advice. Consumers may contact their point of purchase
for enquiries.

Food Agency (SFA) has extended the recall to include two additional Mie Sedaap
products from Indonesia due to the presence of ethylene oxide. SFA has directed
Arklife Distributors Pte Ltd to recall Mie Sedaap Soto flavour instant noodles and Curry
flavour instant noodles. The recall is ongoing.
SFA is continuing regulatory testing of other Mie Sedaap instant noodle products. We
are also working with the importers and Indonesian authorities to investigate and
rectify the cause of ethylene oxide contamination. Should ethylene oxide be detected
beyond the stipulated maximum levels, SFA will initiate recalls of the affected
products.
Consumers who have purchased the implicated products are advised not to consume
it. Those who have consumed the implicated products and have concerns about their
health should seek medical advice. Consumers may contact their point of purchase
for enquiries.

Recall of two Mie Sedaap spicy noodle products from Indonesia due to
presence of Ethylene Oxide
The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has directed Sheng Sheng F&B Industries
Pte Ltd to recall Mie Sedaap Korean Spicy Soup instant noodles and Korean Spicy
Chicken instant noodles due to the presence of ethylene oxide. The recall is ongoing.
2 Following the detection of ethylene oxide in Haagen-Dazs ice cream products
in August 2022, SFA surveyed other food products, including instant noodles for the
presence of ethylene oxide. Ethylene oxide was not detected in any of the food
products surveyed other than Mie Sedaap instant noodles. This triggered SFA to
conduct regulatory testing of Mie Sedaap products so that we could take enforcement
actions. So far, presence of ethylene oxide was confirmed in Mie Sedaap Korean
Spicy Soup instant noodles and Korean Spicy Chicken instant noodles.
3 SFA is continuing regulatory testing of other Mie Sedaap instant noodle
products. We are also working with the importers and Indonesian authorities to
investigate and rectify the cause of ethylene oxide contamination. Should ethylene

oxide be detected beyond the stipulated maximum levels, SFA will initiate recalls of
the affected products as a precautionary measure.
Ethylene oxide
4 Ethylene oxide is a pesticide that is not authorised for use in food. It can be
used to fumigate agricultural products to prevent microbial contamination. Under the
Singapore Food Regulations, ethylene oxide is allowed to be used in the sterilization
of spices. The Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) of ethylene oxide in spices should not
exceed 50mg/kg (50ppm).
5 Although there is no immediate risk to consumption of food contaminated with
low levels of ethylene oxide, long term exposure may lead to health issues. Therefore,
exposure to this substance should be minimised.
6 Consumers who have purchased the implicated products are advised not to
consume it. Those who have consumed the implicated products and have concerns
about their health should seek medical advice. Consumers may contact their point of
purchase for enquiries.
