Differential Calculus: Continuity Exercises

The document contains exercise problems related to continuity in differential calculus. It includes tasks such as determining points and nature of discontinuity for various functions, proving continuity for a specific piecewise function, finding a constant for a continuous function, demonstrating the existence of fixed points in continuous functions, and showing continuity for certain trigonometric functions at x = 0. Each problem requires a detailed analysis of the functions involved.

DIFFERENTIAL CALCULUS

EXERCISE PROBLEMS FOR CONTINUITY

1. Determine the point and nature of discontinuity of the following functions:

1
(i)f (x) = log(|x − 5|), (ii)f (x) = x−2 , (iii) f (x) = sin( x1 ), (iv)f (x) = xx2tan
+10
x

2. Show that the function is continuous only at x = 0.

(
0, if x ∈ Q,
f (x) =
x, otherwise.
Note that you also have to show that function is also discontinuous at every point other than
0.

3. Let f : [0, 2] → R is a continuous function given by,

(
ax2 + x + 1, if x < 1,
f (x) =
x3 + 3, if x ≥ 1.
Find the value of a.

4. Let f : [a, b] → [a, b] is continuous function, then show that there exists c ∈ [a, b] such that
f (c) = c. Such points are called "Fixed point" of function f .

5. Show that the functions x sin( x1 ) and x cos( x1 ) are continuous of if define there value to be 0 at
x = 0.
